Translation of the lyrics of Devant Le Miroir by Dernière Volonté.

So here it is, I don't claim the translation to be perfect, and a lot of subtlety and beauty is lost in the process. But at least it gives a general idea. And yes it's a bit emo.

*** this song is heavily adapted from a poem by Guillaume Apollinaire, some formulations sound a bit surrealistic for that

***** effleurer means to stroke very lightly and gently

My Guilty Pleasures

We all have some. And while aknowledging them doesn't excuse them. It is still always interesting to see where our weaknesses lie.

So, what I did, I assigned a guilt mark to each band out of 10, and multiplied the mark by the number of listens, to get this little top 10.

10. Sonic Youth 535 (guilty points = 5/10, listens = 107)

Way too many hipsters love Sonic Youth for it to be a guiltless listen.

9. AFI 544 (guilty points = 8/10, listens = 68)

I think the picture speaks for itself... Too bad considering they had some pretty good albums.

emo...

7. Amorphis 687 (guilty points = 3/10, listens = 229)

I am not sure why actually, but I do feel some guilt when listening to them.

(yes, those are men)
The voice is so gay, and only fat 16 years old otaku girls are supposed to listen to them.

5. Anorexia Nervosa 750 (guilty points = 7/10, listens = 150)

Meh, shiny black outfits, bombastic keyboard instrumentations, new rock shoes... All that is so badly kitsch. And to go back to the shiny outfits, I have a profound disgust for things that are shiny.

4. HIM 1010 (guilty points = 10/10, listens = 101)

HIM is the guilty listen by definition, it's atrociously catchy, yet totally empty. The fanbase doesn't help it either.

3. LUNA SEA 1134 (guilty points = 7/10, listens = 162)

Again, pretty self-expanatory picture...

2. Placebo 1242 (guilty points = 6/10, listens = 207)

They took many melodies, or ambience from previous less known bands (often indie faggotry) made it in a format and production that would work better in the mainstream and here we have the idols of a generation of sexually insecure, angsty thirtweenagers.

And here is the winner!!! How can one not feel guilty of listening to a band who decided to only make songs in natural minor scale and putting harmonies to make it sound epic. With unoriginal song structures, drumming and bass playing.

Last.fm, doesn't just show on our profiles who we listen to, but also, how dedicated we are to an artist, by means of playcounts.
For instance I am a listener of both Devin Townsend and ABBA. However, I am far more dedicated to the former, than to the latter, as can be seen in my charts.

Now when I go and look at the top charts of the week. I am mainly informed on how many people have listened to such and such artists and not how much people really liked them.

Artist name is followed by, in bold, the average plays per listeners, then by the fraction containing the number of listens and number of listens. And the change in rank when compared to the chart of the week.
I've used exclusively integer for the average listens, since number of track listens on our profiles are integers too. However the ranking is based onreal numbers got.

Anyway, it is quite interesting to see how some artists greatly move, and we can say that according to this, Fall Out Boy, Slipknot and Nine Inch Nails are greatly underrated in the charts of the week. While Oasis, AC/DC and (to a lesser yet still surprsing amount) Coldplay are way overrated.

I won't jump on any musical sociologic conclusions so fast, but some trends can be noticed... I'll let you, readers, give your own point of view, and hypothesis on this.

I have also decided to compare my dedication to my top 50 to the dedication to that of the average listener of those bands. And then see how many times more I am dedicated to them.

Gothic Metal : Serious business (A tale of how I found out about Leyasu's lousy trolling)

It all started on a boring sunday afternoon. I had decided to tag my top 50 (I had nothing better to do). Everything went normally until about one hour after I was done with the tagging, I recieved the following message from user Leyasu in my shoutbox :

Automessage: You have recieved this message because you have put the watched tag gothic metal on a watched page. As part of the movement to organise and accurately tag artists, you may want to read the gothic metal tags article about what it is, as it has been noticed some of what you tagged as gothic metal does not fit its description. You may wish to see if the symphonic metal or dark metal tags are more appropriate. You may also wish to check out the tags for symphonic gothic metal and gothic doom metal, as these may help you better tag music in the future. Please enjoy your visit to Last Fm. Ley x
Now, that looked a bit weird, I had only tagged one artist as gothic metal (My Dying Bride) and made me wonder :
- Why is that automessage from last.fm sent by a user, moreover one that isn't even a subscriber?
- Why is this automessage so delayed?
- Since when does last.fm care so much about the validity of tags?
- How come I recieved this thing for only one tag when I had also tagged Children of Bodom as punk and Sufjan Stevens as sexy?

But still, with all the new last.fm stuff, it could just be one more oddity.
I went to answer to that Leyasu, a ~~sixteen year old girl~~ 22 year old girl, who, conveniently (lol), was online at the same time.
Asking primarily why My Dying Bride didn't fit, and telling her that I thought this thing was quite stupid.
She deleted my comment and answered the following.

Primarily the band is known to perform a version of Doom Metal, being cited as such in their own page. As for the gothic metal tag page, it doesnt match the description there. Also, the tagging system is being considered for complete removel because of people mistagging artists, causing problems in the recommendation and radio services. That is why you politely recieved the automessage, suggesting more appropriate tags, as the general rule is genre specific tags are for artists of that genre only, while personal tags such as, per say, ''Gothic Metal Biskui'' you would be able to load whatever you wanted on there. The discussion continued a bit, with my messages in her shoutbox ending up automatically deleted.
With her posting the following messages :
Your mistagging causes more propblems than you realise. Albight they might not do a strict version of doom metal, one of the myriad doom metal tags may be more appropriate, such as gothic doom metal (gothic/doom). Also genre's are defined as ''specific, unique combinations of musical characterstics in composition and performance''. Genres are VERY still, and it its a failable topic in all major music studies. Scenes however, are not still, which are denoted as fans, places, eras, fashions, etc etc. Also, mistagging artists causes them to be advertised to the wrong audience, recommended to the wrong audiences, and causes problems for that tags radio. Im happy to discuss the issue out with you though in a civilised manner, if you wish. Ley x
Well, there is two definations to Gothic Metal that the tag shares, the official defination of gothic metal as a genre professionally (by composers and such) which is, put simple: Dual Lead Vocalists (Male and Female), Black/Death rooted electic guitar, accoustic guitar, thick atmospheres, keyboard leads: typical bands; Penumbra, Mandrake, Keltgar, Sirenia. Then there is the other defination (which evolved parallel), which is termed goth metal (yes, in english Goth and Gothic really dont have anything to do with each other): Combination of goth rock anddoom metal: Baritone vocals, prevelant use of minor chords, morbid lyrics, often repetative guitar work: typical bands; To Die For, Lacrimas Profundere, Type O Negative. I could see how MDB would fit more into the ''goth metal'' side of things to be fair. And yes, you are being civilised lol. It was more so said for the amount of people who try to lecture me because ''they like the band'' lol. Your thoughts on this? Ley x
Now, I am not an expert in gothic metals and such, but this distinction of gothic and goth, and the use of "composers and such" just sounded dodgy, if not downright fishy!

So, I googled Leyasu, and the first page I found (after quite a lot of mistyped pages about Tokugawa Ieyasu) was the following :

which led to her banned wikipedia account

I made another little research about the concept of a "watched tag", and only found stuff posted by Leyasu on various profiles.

So she basically made up this whole little pack of lie only to shove her own perception of what Gothic Metal is down people throat, after she wasn't able to do so otherwise on wikipedia.

For the lulzy trivia :
- She tagged Emery and blessthefall tracks as emocore (talk about hypocrisy...)
- She pretends to compose music (so that's the "composers and such" she was mentionning earlier, I guess) that is a mix of emocore and gothic metal... (Fugazi meets Theater Of Tragedy... just imagine that...)

Anyway, moderately succesful troll was moderately succesful.
I hope she will be remembered for this (she could even make it to æ)

tl;dr : I have too much free time, so does Leyasu. We should both form a "Beauty and the Beast" lead singing duet in a true gothic metal band (I being Beauty, of course!)

OK, I rarely come up with journals, but this is some major case situation.
Everything I liked about last.fm has been covered with fat greasy videos, lack of privacy (à la facebook and stuff), smaller charts, and a very backwards visual.
All in all, it just looks like some HMV/eBay/MySpace hybrid that I really didn't want.

I have been looking for groups promoting the old last.fm, and this group : http://www.last.fm/group/New+Last.fm+layout+for+the+shitter is the only relevant one I found.
So, I suggest, if you agree with this journal, you should join this group too, and if you know other, bigger or more relevant groups, please give me advices!
We have to do something about it!!!

TL;DR : SRS BUSINESS, NU LAST.FM=SHIT, WANT OLD LAST.FM NAO! FIND GROUPS FOR ACTIVISM!

1. Dark Tranquillity
Can get boring easily

2. In Flames
This band managed to shat the worst album that could ever be expected from them (Come Clarity), and also gets boring easily.

3. Pierrot
Recent stuff was bad, and anyway they disbanded.

4. Anathema
New stuff only sounds good live.

5. Drudkh
Band members have questionable political views.

6. Black Sabbath
Singer has become a horrible person.

7. Katatonia
Singer is fat.

8. Agalloch
They don't tour much.

9. Emperor
Won't record together again...

Has an exotic name that just begs for being mistagged.
