This event was my first time seeing Chthonic, who happen to be my favourite black metal band. I went to the venue early to try and catch the band arriving, they came quite late however so I gave up and ended up having a few drinks at the world's end with my partner. We started queueing at around 5 as we expected the doors to open at six. The doors opened at seven and we got the front. I positioned myself to the left of the stage in hopes of being in front of Doris, however, all of the bass players for the evening were on the right, so I ended up in front of Jesse Lou all night. Oh well. I ain't mad.

Shrapnel came on first. I hadn't heard them before but they played a decent set, the vocalist was a wee bit tipsy and spilled his can of beer a few times, but he avoided potential electrocution and performed with a lot of enthusiasm. He was quite sexy too, this pleased my partner and I.

Next on was Evile. I have to say, I'm not a fan. Their music is bearable but nothing special to me, and considering their set was the only barrier between me and my beloved ChthoniC it was impossible for me to enjoy their set. This was obviously visible as the guitarist mentioned "some people in the front row look like they wanna go home" and called out my partner for almost falling asleep during their set. Oops. Sorry guys, nothing personal... oh actually, it kinda is.

And then the main show ensued as CHTHONIC came on stage, and I was not at all disappointed even with my exceptionally high expectations from them. Freddy was a great vocalist and performed with a lot of charisma. Doris was every bit as beautiful in person as she is in photos, and she's a bloody good bassist! It pleases me to see a bassist getting well deserved attention in a band. The setlist mainly consisted of songs from Mirror of Retribution, but I anticipated this would be the case, and it's a fucking good album so I can't complain. They skipped the whole encore visage and jumped straight into the last two songs, which I didn't mind, although it did make their set seem quite short, so my time with ChthoniC was beautiful but short-lived.

After the show I headed to the merch stand and was disappointed to discover the tour t-shirts had sold out (this is happening increasingly to me, merch people need to stock up more!) so my partner and I went out to wait for the band by the stage door. It didn't take long before they emerged (I believe Jesse came out first) and started to load up the van. They were more than willing to talk to fans and sign stuff, they were very friendly guys and girl. I got a few photos and hugs and a fail high-five from Freddy (I initiated the high-five. I thought it would be a good idea. It wasn't.)

All in all it was an awesome show. ChthoniC are set to be playing some festivals later this year so if you have the chance to see them I sincerely suggest you do. I’m sure many people will disagree with my besotted opinion of Serj Tankian and his musical creations, however, should you care for my conclusion, here it is…

The album opens with Disowned Inc. A song that begins with an impetuous and dramatic classical-inspired riff that I think is a nice continuation of his previous symphony album. The riff stops equally as abruptly and the song proceeds to be a mellow, lyrical piece. The song continues to experiment with tempo and it’s an intense and exciting track, perfect for opening the album. And my favourite part of the song is definitely Serj chanting “God‘s name‘s different in every language“ at the end of the song. [9/10]

The next track entitled Borders Are… is a more modern styled song. It begins slowly but picks up at the chorus to reveal itself as another dramatic track. It has a sudden, fast paced chorus which works wonderfully with Serj’s emotional and slow-paced singing. [6/10]

Deserving? is a funky upbeat track. It’s another one that begins slowly, but the chorus is perhaps the catchiest on the album. It’s an experimental rock song, and ends similarly with a slower and more melodious ending. [9/10]

Beatus continues the slow and melodic rhythm. In my opinion, it’s the most emotional song on the album in terms of the melody. I especially love the layered vocals in this song, and it continues the album’s consistence use of dramatic outbursts. And one section of the song contains some distorted lyrics over a slightly ethnic, possible Armenian-inspired riff. This is quite possibly my favourite track on the album. [10/10]

The next song, Reconstructive Demonstrations, starts abruptly and is one of the more conventional rock songs on the album. However, the simple rockiness of this track is what makes it moderate in the theatricality of the previous and subsequent tracks. It’s not a bad song, but by far not one of the best on the album. [5/10]

Electron is a continuous fast-paced song. It’s quite an experimental track, especially for Serj, as it’s something I could easily envision on a Muse album. It’s a rocky song which slightly electronic tendencies, which I suppose is associated with the song’s title. [6/10]

Many fans of Serj will already be familiar with Gate 21 from his Elect The Dead Symphony. It’s an entirely acoustic track. This song displays Serj’s wide and eccentric vocal range. It’s perhaps one of the more simplistic and melodic songs on the album. [8/10]

Yes, It’s Genocide is another acoustic track which features Serj singing in Armenian. The lyrics and general structure of the song is quite repetitive, however it’s simplicity adds to the beauty of the song. It’s effortless emotion captivates the meaning of the song, regardless of an inability to understand the lyrics. [9/10]

Peace Be Revenged starts softly and melodiously with drums building up as an infectious chorus kicks in. It continues as a steady-paced rock song and slows down towards the end for an emotional and abrupt finish. [6/10]

Left of Center was the first song to officially be released off the album, and it‘s another one of the more contemporary rock songs on the album. It‘s an accelerating rock track with an undeniably catchy chorus. [7/10]

The album closes with Winds Of Summer, a soft acoustic track with quite rough contrasting vocals. It pales in comparison to other slow-paced and emotional songs on the album, but it works well as an ending to an otherwise thrilling album. [4/10]

All in all Serj’s Imperfect Harmonies is perfectly titled, as he continues to push musical boundaries and experiment with various styles of music. It’s the inharmonious clashing of these various styles that works so beautifully and makes this album so interesting to listen to. Overall 10/10.]]>
