2/ Richard Hawley - Standing At The Sky’s Edge
Excellent masterpiece of the cool britpop-crooner. Standing at the sky’s Edge beautifully meanders from one pearl tot the next.

3/ Father John Misty - Fear Fun
Josh Tillman shakes off his Fleet Foxes image and - under a new moniker - reveals a whole new universe of slightly deranged but beautifully orchestrated songs.

4/ Chromatics - Kill For Love
From the stunning Neil young cover of Into the black to electronically infused dreams like Lady and Back From The Grave, Kill for Love is a killer album!

5/ Calexico - Algiers
Recorded in and influenced by New Orleans but at the same time loyal to the Calexico-recipe. Algiers is another standout in their impressive discography!

Canadian singer Al Spx put herself on the map of female vocalists with a unique soulful voice. with a very good album of which this track definitely is the ‘piece de resistance’!

Toxically enchanting vibes in this closing track of Goat’s debut album World Music. This swedish band is shrouded in one big air of scary mystery and is almost ungoogleable for correct information..

These are songs that are not on my top 20 albums...

1/ M83 - Midnight City
The best song standout for me was this excellent single that preceded M83’s ambitious double album. The vocals create an intimate atmosphere that is pulled into the great wide open by the synths. Check the awesome video too!

2/ Grouplove - Colours
You can recognize a great song if it keeps being played in your library on a steady basis. Guess that Colours ending up number one in my last.fm song stats of last year only proves that fact. Hard to understand why this infectious catchy song has not reached bigger audiences yet. After two listens you will surely be singing along.

3/ Lana Del Rey - Video Games / Blue Jeans
It was impossible to ignore the rise of Lizzy Grant in 2011. Let’s forget about all the gossip and let the music just speak for itself. Many artists would kill for such a great double A-side single. I have grown to like Blue jeans even more than Video Games.

4/ Zola Jesus - Vessel
Vessel created massive expectations for Conatus, Zola Jesus’ new album. I think this song is so good that it makes the rest of the album a lot bleaker than it deserves to be. As a result Nika Roza Danilova ended up in my songs list rather than the album list with this awesome crossover between Siouxie Sioux and Fever Ray.

5/ Mumbai Science - Lotus
Time to put on your dancing shoes for the Belgian ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ of Mumbai Science. This young duo is on a steady rise to stardom, paving their road there with great songs as Lotus. It was great to hear them featured in the live set of 2 Many DJ’s too this year at Lokerse Feesten.

2/ Mon-O-Phone – The Great Depression of Mr and Ms Phono
This album is Belgian top quality, yet almost unplayed on the (Belgian) radio. There are undeniably some similarities with both PJ Harvey and The Kills but that is definitely a good thing!

3/ The Vaccines - What Did You Expect from The Vaccines?
This was how Rock ’n Roll sounded in the year 2011. A short, bursting, raw and exuberant experience. Rah Rah Rah!

4/ EMA - Past-Life Martyred Saints
Erika M. Anderson’s debut is one that has to grow on you but slowly a diamond in the rough reveals itself. Standout song is definitely California which sounds like Kim Gordon tossed in a tub full of synths (and that is a good thing!).

5/ dEUS - Keep You Close
As a long time fan, I am very glad dEUS managed to steal a place in my top 5 with Keep You Close. Not that their previous efforts were bad but this one nails it. Highlights include the grand opening title track and the songs where Greg Dulli lends a helping hand - Dark Sets In & Twice (We Survive).

A live act pur sang, Anna Calvi has to be seen to be believed. Captured in a spotlight in a dark warm club she grabs the audience with her presence, voice and guitarplay. Her shy talk inbetween the songs is such a huge contrast with the diva she is when making music.

2/ Black Dub @ Gent Jazz
Trixie Whitley, Daniel Lanois and Brian Blade were the proper mesmerizing ending of a very rainy edition of Gent Jazz.

3/ Arcade Fire @ Main Square Festival
Finally a chance to see Arcade Fire again, the first time since they released The Suburbs. With an enthusiastic crowd and band, a mixed bag of old and new songs and the singalong ‘wake up’, Arcade Fire were the living proof that entertaining big crowds does not require a shallow approach at all!

1/ Musical Highlights
- Arcade Fire hits first prize with this marvellous gig, the proof that entertaining bigger crowds does not need to be shallow at all! A true happiness medicine!
- Portishead with an excellent performance! How uncomfortable to see Beth's stagefright enlarged on such a big screen... goosebumps to the bone!
- Triggerfinger, our belgian rockpride conquering France in style with the help of a lot of belgian fans.
- Warpaint: third time I saw them live, I really have weak spot for that kind of psychedelic dreamy music and for singer Theresa Wayman ;-)
Other nominations go to Queens Of The Stone Age, The National, Eels, Elbow and I Blame Coco

2/ Musical Disappointments
- Tame Impala:, this impala was a bit too tame this time around. I have seen them do better...
- Coldplay:, sorry guys but I don't get worked up about them even though they have few good popsongs the hype is hardly justified...
- "déjà-dance": I read this term in a newspaper and it perfectly describes the way some of the evening dance-acts (Chemical Brothers, Moby, I am talking about you guys) are becoming a charicature of their own act and resort to doing the same trick years in a row... Not really disappointed in the show itself as it was fun as always but definitely looking forward to something new!

3/ Organisational lessons
- plan your bands!
As a matter of fact why not put all the bands that have a big fanbase apathic to anything else than the band they are coming to see on the same day?
- crowd control
E.g. the central corridor between the 2 stages anyone? A few simple measures can help everyone out there and keep queueing times to a minimum...
- give people the space they deserve

1/ Warpaint - Exquisite Corpse EP + The Fool LP
In an unrivaled fashion, the ladies of Warpaint carve their way under your skin, where they ride a wave of reverb and melancholy straight into your heart. The Fool confirmed what was already becoming clear with debut EP Exquisite Corpse: beneath the layer of warpaint is a diamond in the rough!

2/ Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Back again as the brightest star in the indierock galaxy, Arcade Fire’s nostalgic trip toThe Suburbs is a superb testament of lost youth and innocence. Filled to the brim with great songs it proves that the concept of a full album is not yet dead in this impatient ipod era.

3/ Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
The words: Australia, psychedelic and rock, all together in one sentence? Absolutely possible, when wrought in such a greasy and dirty way as Tame Impala! Crushing debut album.

4/ Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
FlyLo’s Cosmogramma earns the prize for the most exciting thing happening in the world of electronic music in 2010! Aims in a lot of different directions at the same time and never misses its target. Impressive live-set at Pukkelpop festival too, a true sound-mosaique-maker!

5/ James Blake - CMYK EP + Klavierwerke EP
The new wonderchild of dubstep only needed 2 excellent EP's and 1 Feist cover to prove that there is a lot of talent hiding behind the name James Blake. Besides Anna Calvi one of the tips for 2011!

6/ Angus & Julia Stone - Down the Way
Brother and Sister open up a can of acoustic folk songs, pour some intimate arrangements over them and weave their voices around it. This is as romantic as they come without getting too cheesy!

7/ Caribou - Swim
A new Caribou record, a new sound. Between almighty album opener Odessa and classy closer Jamelia, Dan Snaith creates one long maniac mantra of electronica.

8/ Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer
Quite the premise: guru from Las Vegas releases a record on Warp backed by Flying Lotus and The Gaslamp Killer. The album turned out to be special, intriguing and extremely exciting. His live skills were about the biggest disappointment in years...

9/ Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions
Neocountry splendor, the sandpaper way. Deer Tick have fallen from the same tree that also dropped the Tallest Man On Earth on us.

10/ John Grant - Queen Of Denmark
John Grant’s bariton deliciously melts with Midlake’s instruments. The Czars lead singer crawls out of emotional limbo in a magnificent heart-stirring way.

1/ Fever Ray - Mercy Street
In 2009 Karin Dreijer Andersson, the female singer of The Knife, had a well deserved succesful launch of her solo album. For 2010 she chooses quality over quantity. This atmospheric cover of Peter Gabriel’s Mercy Street is the best song that caught my ears in 2010!

2/ Lissie - Record Collector
Last year Ellie Goulding was the pop princess to keep an eye out for. Is the same fate to be bestowed upon her american folkfriend Lissie. Album opener Record Collector is an irresistable feelgood song with a lovely buildup towards the end that will make you happy anyday!

3/ Anna Calvi - Jezebel
When warming up the Ancienne Belgique for Grinderman she already blew me away. What a voice, what a presence. I sure hope I can bring her solo album in to my best of 2011!

4/ Janelle Monáe - Tightrope
-Ms. Monáe walks the tightrope and stays clear of the genres dull clichés, delivering an überfunky and swinging R&B song.

5/ Marble sounds - The Time to Sleep
In the shadows of Amatorski and Isbells there is another belgian band going strong and quiet at the same time. They go by the name of Marble Sounds and with The Time To sleep they effortlessly overtake their two more famous brothers.

6/ The Raveonettes - I Wanna Be Adored
Stones Roses classic revisited, bloody well executed by The Raveonettes. And all because a shoe brand turned 50 years! You can download the whole album containing more covers for free on http://50.drmartens.com/

7/ James Blake - Limit to Your Love
Preceding his 2011 full album release, another dubstep pearl of James Blake reaches our ears. After sampling other peoples voices we finally hear that there is no reason for modesty, he has a talent for singing as well.

8/ Stornaway - Zorbing
Harmonious folky popsong that is practically impossible to get out of your head!

9/ Gayngs - The Gaudy Side Of Town
Sensual song with a lazily shuffling beat. Members of Bon Iver, Megafaun and Solid Gold use the moniker Gayngs to break their way into your bedroom.

10/ Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks
Living with Jack White must influence your life some way. Amazing title track that has some sort of an eerie feeling to it.

11/ M.I.A. - Born Free

3/ Gorillaz @ Lotto Arena
Even though I like smaller venues better, every now and then you just hàve to head to a bigger venue. Gorillaz is one of those reasons. And they deliverd big time, a smashing live show, great atmosphere, cool animations and Clint Eastwood in the encore which appeared to be sung along by everyone. Another evening to never forget!

Het werd dus een oerdegelijk rock’n’roll concert, maar wel één voor een braaf zittend publiek.
