Garage: not the venue for such an artist - upstairs at Garage is nice, downstairs leaves much to be desired.
Some of his "fans": a rather unpleasant gang of 60-year-old farts. Surprisingly few people at the concert too!
Drinks: well, I don't think they would have dared to serve them anything stronger...
Price: a bit much
Performance: well, not bad - Shooter Jennings and his band has a pretty eclectic sound inspired by genres such as psychedelic '60s rock, outlaw country, and prog rock. Asala claims that she lost her baby due to her sister Reem's (Reem Nasri) decision to become a singer too! Asala dearest, you silly little thing, could it be the ongoing lawsuit from your ex-husband, or the fact that you seem to be running around all over the world singing, shooting music videos, and just generally appearing in public when you should be at home putting on weight? Why? Because the Egyptian syndicate of musicians has cancelled her membership, which in turn means that she is not allowed to sing (in public) and get payed for it!



The syndicate has in the last few decades been - to put it mildly - hardly restrictive in accepting members, with basically every belly dancer and her grandmother being a member! But now they have started to purge their list of members, stating that they are trying to get rid off pesky cabaret performers whose only asset is their physical appearance. The likes of Maria (Maria Nalbandian), Dana (Dana Halabi), Haifa (Haifa Wehbe), Roula/Rola/Rolla/Roulla, Dominique (Dominique Hourani) and so on are mighty happy about not being Egyptian!

On an even worse turn of events, proper singer Sherien/Shereen is still being harassed by her former producer Nasr Mahrous who suddenly has decided that he wants all the money from the settlement between him and the singer on the alleged breach of contract.


This is most likely because she has signed a 2 album deal with filthy rich Saudi record label ROTANA. That is 5.5 million Egyptian pounds, or a little less than $1,000,000, just like that. She might be a somewhat popular singer, but this son of a pig should shut up, and stop harassing decent women! If anyone has been watching melody tv lately, you might have noticed them playing one of Maria's older videos, then suddenly a yukata-clad, fan-waving female interferes with a "STOP!". Well, it's all a part of Melody's new PR campaign for the new album from the new and "improved" Maria. They promise us a less provocative/vulgar Maria, who has allegedly been taking singing lessons. To me she sounds like just like the old Maria, with a fake Oriental twist and a more glamorous image - I get a "I'm trying to be Dina Hayek" vibe. Image-wise there's more to like if the old Maria was too provocative for you, but if you weren't a fan of her old sound, there is nothing to gain for you from her new album. Anyway, I bet it'll be fun to have her back!
