El domingo 22 de julio, tras algún cambio de ubicación, llegó el que seguramente ha sido el concierto de rock (de verdad) más multitudinario y espectacular que se ha vivido en las Islas.
Abrían The Darkness, de los que no esperaba mucho, pero más que nada por mi decepción por no ver a The Cult. The Darkness siempre me ha parecido un hype y un estilo de revival innecesario. Pero en directo se mostraron contundentes, con un sonido mejor que los propios Guns, y con un cantante que era un auténtico showman, discípulo directo de Freddy Mercury, que se puso al público en el bolsillo con unas cuantas canciones, interactuando, haciéndole cantar, saltando y corriendo de aquí para allá. Un auténtico personaje el tío.
Tras casi dos horas después de que terminara el grupo inglés, salió Guns N' Roses con un espectacular despliegue de luces, monitores y fuegos artificiales. El sonido dejó algo que desear, y la voz de Axl muchas veces estaba tapada por las guitarras. El concierto duró más de tres horas, aunque también hay que decir que hubo muchos rellenos de solos e intervenciones de artistas invitados, lo cual no está mal para un espectáculo de rock, pero creo que los fans, la mayoría de los cuales no habían visto nunca a la banda ni soñaban en hacerlo, habrían deseado un set más clásico con canciones con las que pudieran saltar, bailar y corear, cosa que hicieron bien poco (con Welcome to the Jungle, o November Rain, pero poco más). Y es que el entusiasmo que demostró el público con The Darkness no lo consiguió con la banda principal, creo que por la poca empatía que demostró Axl Rose, el cual, al menos, estaba en mejor forma de lo que muchos creíamos.
