There's a few things in the 'yet to be listened to properly' stack that probably would have made it in if there were world enough and time to give everything the attention it deserves.

It's been a good year for EAI / lowercase inprov type stuff, reports of EAIs demise seem to be somewhat premature. In addition,there's Stump's fun mid 80's post-punk finally rereleased on CD; spectral droning from Scorces; art pop from Pit Er Pat and Autistic Daughters; veteran electronic composer Eliane Radigue with a subtle piece for master cellist Curtis; young electronic composer Vanrooy producing equally subtle work, here with pianist Van Haegenborgh; unclassifiable violin avantgarderie from Rosetto, just one of her many fine releases this year and John Butcher showing he's just as great doing old skool uppercase improv as he is at everything else.

Part biography, part cultural history, part review archive all peppered through with Watson's trademark (if considerably more restrained than usual) cultural theory (Marx, Adorno, Volosinov).

It's particularly good on Bailey's early career as a jobbing musician as well as the cultural milleau of the avant garde music in the 60s - arguments abut the relative merits or improvised and composed musing being particulary intense at the time. As previously, Watson makes a strong case for the (politically) revolutionary potential of (at least some kinds) of avant garde art rescuing it from accusations of bourgeois elitism. Sure, there's some of Watson critical evalualtions that I don't go along with - AMM and droney minimalism get pretty short shrift - but by and large he's on the money.

Ultimately, though,it's Bailey that shines through.
