so I went and saw Yo La Tengo last night at CityFest.

I'll start off by saying that I hadn't really ever listened to any of their stuff previously, and was unsure as to what I should expect. they were a pretty solid live band, fairly energetic. they played some fun covers, including a Sun Ra song, which was pretty surprising.

I'll admit that my musical inclinations have recently led me away from indie-rock in general, so I'm not going to complain about the genre of music they play. really, as far as indie-rock goes, they weren't bad.

my biggest problem was with the guitar solos. despite demonstrating to the crowd that he was an at least decent guitarist, he decided to ignore this fact during every single one of his guitar solos. seriously, they sounded terrible, and this was only made worse by the fact that I knew he was playing that way on purpose.

oh well. the highlight of the show for me didn't actually have anything to do with the music. it was a very attractive girl a few rows up who had an interesting tattoo of a tree over her shoulder blade.

they've got some great-looking stuff, and it's all pretty affordable. I'm personally a big fan of their Medieval Swords, but they've got a lot of other stuff too.

and really, what could be better than listening to some Iron Maiden or Blind Guardian while swinging a sword around?

whoo, I saw a wonderous concert last night.

there were a hell of a lot of openers, and most of them sucked. but one did not.
that band was Miles Beyond, a band (apparently) from Flint, MI. a POWER METAL band. and they were pretty good. the vocalist was amazing. I'm thinking about getting their first album off their website...

anyway, the second-billed Leaves' Eyes were alright. female vocalist, crazy screaming guy too. he had a lot of hair. like past his belt a lot. anyway, their bassist was creepy. I may one day have nightmares about him.

finally, after way too much delay, Blind Guardian took the stage. and they were pretty much everything I hoped they would be. they played a really good setlist, too. they had quite a few songs off of Nightfall in Middle-Earth and A Twist in the Myth, which I was just fine with. they also played for almost an hour and a half, which I was also quite fine with.

all in all a good concert.

I have come before you today in my very first journal entry to talk to you about an amazing album I recently discovered. It is "666" by Aphrodite's Child. Now, before you start freakin out on me about Satan and stuff...well, don't. "666" is actually an amazing progressive rock concept album made in the early 70s, and is more or less faithfully based on the biblical book of Revelations.
Religiosity aside, this album is spectacular. It's very strange to say the least, but in a good way. I highly recommend anyone intrested in progressive/psychadelic rock give this album a listen, especially the track Infinity.

Also, you may already know one of Aphrodite's Child's founding members. His name is Vangelis, and composed soundtracks later on in his life, including the Acadamy-Award Winning score to Chariots Of Fire, as well as Blade Runner.

And, on an interesting side note, I actually discovered this album because I saw it on the inside sleeve of Uriah Heep's album "The Magician's Birthday" (I have it on vinyl, and the two albums were released on the same label in the same year). And, I was naturally a bit curious about the album, so I looked it up. and I was happy with what I found.
