Would they get many people turning up?
Happy to say the answer is a resounding YES!!

The small club was packed full! :)

Support band Breton Armada were first on, and very good they were too. The music was reminiscient of early Numan/Foxx and the Spanish lyrics were mostly spoken. A lot of the crowd seemed to know both the songs and the band and they were very well received. I even bought the album afterwards :)

So, onto John Foxx And The Maths....
I think they played the same set as on the UK tour last year. The crowd lapped it up - especially some of the older tracks like Hiroshima Mon Amour, Burning Car, Plaza etc. Just For A Moment and The Good Shadow genuinely sent shivers up my spine and of course Underpass was the highlight of the show.
The sound was very tight and spot on - it'll be interesting to see if they play any more tracks from The Shape of Things at the forthcoming gig at the Cargo in September.

I will book a night off for that - I WILL!

Well 06 and 07 were such brilliant years for gigs, but this year's been relatively quiet. Good thing really as I wouldn't have had the cash to go to many due to moving house etc.
Here's what I did manage to get to...

Gary Numan
Ministry
Combichrist + Ashbury Heights

INFEST..
Coreline + Grendel
100 Blumen + Santa Hates You + Heimataerde + 5F-X + And One
Marsheaux + Tyske Ludder + Noisuf-X + Front 242

So glad I finally got to see 242 live - they were brilliant!

Friday
Travelled down on the coach on Friday morning with my mate Tony. Got there about 3ish and had a nice pub meal and a pint to set us up for the rest of the day and toddled off to check in at the Halls.
We got there slightly early so a good few more pints were sunk, before meeting up with my mates Hannah and Rik (The PCP Principle)
Bit of a strange sight to see everyone queueing up to get in, and they didn't let everyone in till gone 8 either! What's that all about?!

Coreline was totally fucking mental! Cardboard robots, Daft Punk style movements and banging noise. At least it made a change from the 'bloke behind a laptop'. Can't be bad - well, apart from the Rick Astley sing-a-long at the end. The saddest part was - EVERYONE KNEW THE WORDS!
Missed Snog as we proceeded to get ourselves more drunk. Had quite a few tequila shots too - ooer!
Grendel - played an awesome set! Mostly cloaked in dry ice, by that time I was a little bit drunk so I don't really remember what they played! hehe..
Staggered off back to the Halls and got chatting to a bloke from our floor - never even caught his name! :P

Saturday
Felt a bit worst for wear in the morning, but my mate was ok. Sauntered off into town to clear our heads and get summat to eat.
Later on we missed SkinjoB and I only caught the last ten seconds of 100Blumen's set - they sounded good too, quite crunchy :)
Hadn't heard anything of Santa Hates You so I didn't know what to expect, but they were good too. Pounding teutonic beats, snarling vocals, and the occasional shouts of 'SANTA HATES YOU!' Pretty good :)
Heimataerde - one of the bands that convinced me to go this year! Was really looking forward to them too. They came out dressed as 12th Century Templar Knights, and while the two blokes at the ends of the stage didn't do much till the end, the music and show exceeded my expectations.
Cups of blood and poison were passed round the stage, swordfights abounded and harsh Germanic dark electro sounds pleased my ears :)
5F-X I thought these were going to fill the instrumental dancy spot and I was right! Another band who didn't just stand behind their laptops, they certainly put on a good spectacle. Dressed as aliens in what must have been blisteringly hot suits, one came out into the crowd with the 'Crowdscanner 5000' and the glowsticks came out in force! :) Most enjoyable!
And One Surprisingly I hadn't heard much of them before, but I will be now. Pleasing synth-pop, a few cover versions (notably by Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys), the frontman chatted to the crowd and everyone bounced along happily :)
Back at the Halls the people kept waking me up, screaming and shouting - maybe I'm just an old fart?!

Sunday
I felt pretty good, and Tony was feeling the previous nights effects this time. Hung around for a bit before deciding to go and see Hellboy II. Good film as well - brilliant effects even if the story was a bit thin... Pizza Hut was shit - staff didn't seem bothered, so we went to Frankie & Bennys and had a huge pizza and garlic bread (natch!)
Missed seeing Deviant UK, but I wasn't bothered as I'd seen them before and they're a bit of a shit Gary Numan rip off.
Marsheaux were enjoyable. Like early Ladytron, all minimal synths and female vocals - I'll be checking them out more.
Tyske Ludder I thought were excellent! Sort of old school EBM/industrial, with pounding beats, snarling German vocals and good visuals which complemented the songs, with images of war and Scientology etc :)
Noisuf-X For some reason I don't remember much about their set - think I was too busy avoiding the glowstick waving crowd and the bloke in the smelly anorak in front of me. Hmm...marred it a bit for me..
Front 242 - were absolutely fucking awesome! I'd never seen them before and was beginning to think I never would! We managed to get to the front, and looking back it was the best spot to be in. The sound was spot on, deafening at times, but I'm not complaining :)
The set contained a load of old tracks like Funkadahfi, Kampfbereit, Body 2 Body, along with the usual Headhunter and W.T.P.
Still can't believe how good they were after all this time - hope they come round again in the near future!

..and that was about it really! Saw some good (and bad) sights, ate loads of junk and drunk till I didn't feel drunk - bliss!
Can I do it again this weekend? :)

Spent a nice quiet evening seeing Ministry last night :P
Me and Ally toddled along to Wolvo on the Metro with a load of peeps.
Had a couple in The Giffard then got there just in time for them to come onstage. Timed it just right as we didn't fancy seeing the support band (Slaves to Gravity), and they kicked off with Let's Go - and everybody did - absofuckinglootely mental!
I'm not that familiar with their last two albums, so some tracks were lost to me, but I did have a jump about to N.W.O., Just One Fix and No W. Didn't understand why the stage had wire fences round, but they could be something for Al Jourgensen to lean on as he's getting on a bit now!
Surprised we didn't get Stigmata in the encore, but their rendition of Wonderful World (yes, the Louie Armstrong one!) was a fitting swan song for their last ever UK date.
Absolutely brilliant - wish I'd have seen them before now :(
I'm a bit battered and bruised too - maybe I'm getting a bit old for this moshing lark! (The spirit is willing but the body just can't take it anymore!)

Saw Gary Numan on Monday night - hmmm... For some reason I felt a bit underwhelmed again. I mean, it was the tour for Replicas, an album I got into almost 30 years ago, so it should have been brilliant. Some parts were good, like hearing We Have A Technical live for a change, and even I Nearly Married A Human (and we'll probably never hear them live again), but it left me feeling a bit...cold I suppose. I just wanted to hear some new stuff. Ally pointed something out to me though - maybe I've seen him too many times? Could be, and everytime I do see him he does Are 'Friends' Electric and Cars (suppose he has to, they are his most popular tracks).

It seems to be a trend nowadays for bands/artists to do a tour based on an old album. But when I saw John Foxx do Metamatic last year it ranked as one of my best gigs of the year - why? Probably because he doesn't tour that often, and to hear some of those tracks live was a real treat.

Either I'm turning into a picky old fart or I just want to see and hear stuff I haven't heard live before... I dunno...
