Yeah, this is going to be a work in progress because I still have to remember which albums came out this year. These are in no particular order, but they are definitely my favorites of this year.

This Town Needs Guns - Animals
A fantastic piece of work. This album is definitely in my top five for the year. Having listened to their self-titled on a whim, I thought it was catchy and fun. Not the best thing I had ever heard, but good. When I heard Animals, I was hooked. I hate to use the term "mathy" to describe music, but I can't help it when it comes to this band. Minus The Bear on speed.

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head
Scarlett Johansson doing Tom Waits covers? Fucking sing me up.

Ghostlimb - Bearing & Distance
Saw these guys live at DUDEFEST and I was blown away. Fucking awesome hardcore. Has the guitarist from Graf Orlock. Can't say much else about them, but this album rules.

Capsule - Blue
Another amazing hardcore release. If you're not into these guys already, your life is meaningless. I personally love it because of how gritty it is. And the fact that they use Orange amplifiers.

Genghis Tron - Board Up the House
Fucking duh. Easily in the top five.

Dance Club Massacre - Circle of Death
So fucking fun. Extremely ridiculous, to the point of it being laughable, but awesome regardless.

Various Artists - Connections
6-way split between Amalthea, Arse Moreira, Dodewaard, Eucalypt, Hiro, and Orbit Cinta Benjamin. High five.

Portraits of Past - Discography
Technically doesn't count because it's a discography, but I can't leave it out. Again, fucking duh.

Various Artists - Emo Annihilation
As always, React With Protest releases a great compilation. I think this is the last one in the series.

Caitlyn Bailey - Fuego
Definitely one of the best releases of the year. Four songs, but each one is worth its weight in gold.

The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
I absolutely loved The Sunset Tree and didn't care much for Tallahassee. This album has reached my top five. John Darnielle puts a lot of emotion into every song anyway, but I felt this album has a certain place in my heart, and I can almost find a piece of myself in the way the music weaves in and out.

See You Next Tuesday - Intervals
One of the most amazing metalcore/hardcore/grindcore/whatever bands playing music today. This album, along with their previous releases, is all the proof you need. I sometimes feel certain aspects of it pale in comparison to Parasite, but then the album concludes and I'm left feeling like an idiot, asking myself how I could ever think Intervals was anything less than CUNT's best album.

Loma Prieta - Last City
This album should be on everyone's list this year. When I first heard them, I passed them off as typical, dull screamo. With the release of Last City, I can safely say I was both wrong and right. They're typical, but far from dull. This album packs a punch.

Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader
Cap'n Jazz for the new millennium. If it doesn't make your heart twinge, there's some wrong with you.

Polar Bear Club - Sometimes Things Just Disappear
This band is amazing and if you don't like them, you should feel bad. My copy of The Redder, The Better has been played so much the disc is melting (metaphorically speaking). Excellent release. Another top five album.

La Dispute - Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair
I want to say so many great things about this album, but honestly, it's not nearly as good as Vancouver. I feel like the band has definitely grown as a songwriting entity, but I miss the youthfulness and raw passion of Vancouver. That doesn't make this a bad album. If it did, I wouldn't mention it. It has its good points, but it just isn't what I was hoping for. :(

Team Goldie - Summer Tour EP
Yeah, it's in the top releases, despite it being an EP. It's solid all over. Four songs, but each song is so fucking fun and catchy, it's hard not to love them. If you want a great example of why this album rules, check out this video:

The Ergs! - Upstairs/Downstairs
Top five, for sure. Probably my favorite pop-punk release of the last four or five years.

The Wonder Years - Won't Be Pathetic Forever
Another EP, but still great. More pop-punk, also great. Catchy and fun songs about living life and having fun being an asshole.

fucking awesome. me and four other dudes balls deep in a honda accord for five hours. every time someone asked us where we were from, we brought that up.

SO, THE PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Red Chord, Transistor, Transistor, Young Widows, and Trap Them all canceled. instead of the red chord, kylesa played twice (friday and sunday).

FRIDAY
You Will Die - some sort of metal band that only did instrumental stuff. they were decent, but nothing special. a good opening band.
The Wayward - i skipped this set to poop down the street and buy whiskey/beer.
Plague Bringer - loud as fuck and really fucking awesome. one of the guitarists was using loaner equipment and it kept fucking up, and he was really pissed off. a bunch of people talked to him about it, including me and bob (guitarist for good teeth/gold teeth), and he was happy that we enjoyed it.
Racebannon - fucking amazing. the lead singer was all over the place and the guitarist was such a fucking nice guy. it sucked because as they lead up to their final song, the mic went out and wouldn't come back on, so the singer stormed off the stage and the band finished the song without him. despite that, their set was fantastic.
Nachtmystium - skipped their set to drink beer and eat mcdonalds
Coliseum - SO FUCKING GOOD. probably my favorite set all weekend. they played beautifully and the crowd was so into them. they rocked my fucking face off. talked to the bassist afterward and found out that not only were they amazing musicians, they were also SUPER cool dudes.
Kylesa - i don't like this band, but they played a good set. they pull off the dual-drummers well.
Torche - loud as fuck and fucking great. the girl from kylesa was on-stage throughout their set, stage-diving and causing a ruckus. i left before their last song because i had the worst headache, but gary (singer of good teeth/gold teeth) said it sounded like the end of the world.

SATURDAY
worldeater - woke up late, so we missed their set.
Weekend Nachos - i've seen them before and they were great. they were better this time.
Shitstorm - fucking turtleviolence. so insane.
Get Rad - another one of my favorite sets this weekend. the pit was absolutely crazy and the band was nuts on stage. before they played "don't fuck with my cake," they called out lords for being dicks and pissing on their fans (literally).
The Dream Is Dead - missed their set because i fell asleep
Gaza - so much fucking energy and so fucking good. dylan (other guy i rode with) went fucking insane and came out of the pit with bloody knuckles. i felt like the world was ending during their set.
Lords - great. they explained what get rad talked about: the lead singer peed in lex's (of daughters) hands and he threw it in the crowd of kids. ended with "the internet sucks and everything you read is an exaggeration."
Phoenix Bodies - holy shit, so much dick. before the show, i went and bought a spiderman beach ball at the dollar store and blew it up for the set. a black guy sold us stolen sunglasses. with these combined, i went into the pit. from each side of the stage, guys dove into the crowd holding an inflatable dolphin and a green raft. it was perfect. a kid in the crowd got naked and stage dove. one of the singers (not derrick) got naked after people yelled at him. they closed with a cover of "sabotage."
Hewhocorrupts - again, a lot of dick. they played "microeconomics," "master of profits," and "mic marker check." (i was so excited for the last song). it's hard to explain how awesome they were.
Insect Warfare - missed their set because i had 0 energy. really pissed i missed it, too.
Despise You - meh.
Pig Destroyer - yeah, they're fucking awesome. i have some short clips from their set (will post soon). someone brought a giant stuffed dinosaur and people were crowd-surfing with it and whipping it around the pit. most of their set was from phantom limb, but they played a few songs from terrifyer. closed with a 30-second cover song where the goal was to get as many people to stage-dive as possible.

SUNDAY
In The Face Of War - the band i wanted to see the most. they ruled. closed with "for a better tomorrow" and it got really fucking intense in the pit. when the breakdown ended and the guitars crashed, ten kids ran forward and jumped into the crowd surrounding the stage.
Ghostlimb - has the guitarist from graf orlock. really fucking good and i wish i could see them again soon.
Capsule - really fucking crazy good and really loud.
Demiricious - i don't know
Skeletonwitch - another of my favorite sets from the weekend. so much hair and so many spikes. also, a lot of guitar solos. anytime the vocalist wasn't screeching or growling, he was thanking the crowd profusely or "presenting" the other members of the band. really clean-sounding and just so fucking good.
Graf Orlock - i don't like this band. many of you know this. i loved their set. definitely the craziest set all weekend. the singer was on stage for maybe 1/4 of the entire set. he was always in the crowd screaming. i will post videos because some of them are really crazy. the last song ended with the jurassic park theme and the band just played over it while kids dove into the stage screaming. fucking epic. for the last 30 seconds, the bassist got in the crowd and everyone held him up on his feet/knees and he played.

then, we left. we were so fucking tired and the weekend was already SO good that we couldn't justify staying for Backstabbers Inc., Iron Lung, and Kungfu Rick, even though we all wanted to see them. the whole weekend destroyed us and we had a five hour drive home, so we booked it. best decision we ever made.

VIDEOS

pig destroyer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2Wy6MKz63Y
graf orlock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHsZf2Z_ljc (not by me)

It has a nice mix of melodic and chaotic screamo, some bands that don't get much credit, some bands that are quite popular in the scene, and they're all awesome. One song flows from the next with a fluidity I've never had with a screamo mix (I've had a few metalcore mixes like that). I'm happy with it.

Michael Barton is a really cool guy (and so is his pal Jacob). Hopefully, I get to see them again (PIX Fest, probably).
