Doves at Billboard The Venue, 170 Russell Street, Melbourne, Victoria on 28 Jul 2009

Location: Billboard The Venue, 170 Russell Street

It’s been four long years since the DOVES’ last sold out Australian tour, and Secret Sounds is thrilled to announce the return of Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Jez and Andy Williams this winter to play a handful of shows on the back of their recent release Kingdom of Rust.

This trio from Manchester has a catalogue of the most grandiose, meticulously produced albums of the decade. Their fourth offering Kingdom of Rust captures the same mix of atmospheric rockers and heartfelt ballads which showcases their talent for crafting deeply personal songs, that has characterised each of their previous records.

Entering the charts at # 2 in the UK, Kingdom of Rust succeeds in giving fans a fix of new music that sounds fresh without altering the formula so much as to alienate their steadfast devotees. Fans of the DOVES past offerings, the Mercury Prize-nominated debut Lost Souls in 2000, their follow-up UK # 1 and Mercury Prize-nominated record The Last Broadcast from 2002, and the UK # 1 Some Cities of 2005, will appreciate the sonic depth of the new album.

With skipping rhythms, chiming guitars, wobbly sheets of synthesizer, and the distinctive throaty sound of frontman Jimi Goodwin, watching the DOVES live is both an intimate and epic affair. With their whisper-to-shout style, moving easily from hushed organic guitar-bass-drums to orchestrated and stormy, they know how to build a big space and then fill it with an electric, multicolored haze.

While absence has made hearts grow even fonder of the much-loved DOVES, don’t miss your chance to see them play this winter. With special guests to be announced, tickets to these shows are expected to sell quickly.
