I felt the need to make this journal entry after putting on one of my all time favourite songs on, Money for nothing, at full volume. My speakers could barely hold the volume, the ground was shaking and my ears were aching-it was excellent. the entire first few minutes of that track, the soft buildup until the guitar riff enters, is just insane.

to me, there are songs that no one, no matter how elitist or ignorant someone is, can resist. they make the hairs on the back of your neck go straight up, they make you shiver, they give you goosebumps, they make you leap up and headbang or play airguitar frantically. they are on a whole other level compared to the majority of songs. they are very rare, and usually sound best extremely loud!! they are studio songs that make you feel you are right in the middle of a concert crowd. they are euphoric.

so what are these songs? what songs, for you, set the standard for absolute greatness?

for me, there are a select few:
Sympathy for the Devil
The Samba intro, the ow! the lyrics, the solo and the fade out at the end. my favourite song of all time, the greatest rock song ever written, the greatest song ever written!
Voodoo Chile(Slight return)
The greatest sound a guitar has produced, and a mind blowing solo. fantastic.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
crank it up loud, and strum that riff. a solo that speaks and brings out the rebel in everyone.
Wonderwall
This is not my favourite Oasis song, but the perfect intro and heartfelt vocals always make me shiver. it's one of the most popular songs of all time for a reason!

the struggle for the top

recently, lets say in the past month or so, I've found that two bands are vying for my top spot. it's strange because they are so completely unalike. everytime I listen to one, I prefer it, then I go back and listen to the other and I prefer that. these bands are, weird as though it may seem, Incubus and Oasis.

they seem to keep matching each other in every way possible. it can seem at times that nothing can beat liam gallagher whining 'shiiiiiiiineeee', but Brandon Boyd seems to be able to come back with a touching and amazing performance such as Dig.

guitar? Noel Gallagher can be very melodic and catchy (My Big Mouth) and Mike Eizingier can provide the scratch for the metal itch any day (Circles).

what puzzles me is why these bands are so different and yet I love them equally. they are complete opposites in terms of attitude and look. Oasis are very loud, rude, hilarious and gritty while Incubus are more quiet, relaxed and hippyish.

it is interesting, to me at least, ( I am quite sure no one will read this anyway) to exammine my weekly charts and track how the two bands have battled for the spot of my favourite current band.

1 July: tied 9th, with 10 plays.

8 July: both bands knocked back far into the nether regions of my charts. Oasis down to 13 with 12 plays, while incubus fall 7 places behind in spot 20 with only five plays.

15 July: Oasis make their move up the charts, climbing to spot 4 with 22 plays. Incubus climb only five spots to rest at number 15, with only 3 plays!

22 July: Oasis claim the top spot at number one, with a whopping 81 plays. Incubus climb 4 more places, but remain at a crap 4 plays.

29 July: BOOM! Incubus climb ten places straight up to number one with 58 plays, while Oasis are knocked back down to number four with 17 plays.

5 Aug: The two clash this time, dominating my charts, however Incubus remain on top with 46 plays, while Oasis place at number two with 34 plays.

I really cannot decide which band I like more, and look forward to this weeks charts, as I have been playing each band more than ever. will oasis remain to put up a fight or will incubus manage to claim the number one spot for three weeks in a row and probably become my favourite band? we'll see.

lately i have found that the levels of flaming in shoutboxes has been particuarly high, and is usually caused by metal fans.

further investigation into these users groups will find groups such as anti green day, anti linkin park, anti nu metal, anti mtv.

these are just two symptomns of the new disease sweeping last fm, boganitis.

boganitis is the dysfunction of the brain in which men and women with mullets and moustaches delude themselves into thinking that they have unrivalled knowledge of the world and how it works. they believe that undiscovered metal (and for the left wing bogans, melodic death metal) is excellent because it has not yet reached over a million plays. sufferers have been known to make bold statements such as:

Why in our world artists, who make easy, catchy, primitive music are richer, more popular and more respected than those, who have skills and make ambitious art?”. Maybe it's not a problem for you, but for me it is a very serious problem, that leads to decadence and possibly to the fall of mankind.

we must kill all bogans. if you suspect one of your friends of suffering from this horrible disease, kill them.
