Gallows — Last June - sounds like the kind of generic thing my metal friends listen to. Forgettable. I think. Actually, I'm not sure. I can't quite remember....

Star F***ing Hipsters — The Civilization Show - like a contemporary Madness. Great modernised ska sound intermixed with a driving metal pace. Like it a lot :-)

Big D and the Kids Table — One Day. Like this a lot too. Fun, frenetic and fast-paced. More of those ska-esque trumpets and uplifting beats. Great feel-good song.

Get Dead — This One's For Johnny. This is brilliant. Like folk. Like rock. It' s folk-rock. Chilled. Happy. Uplifting. Guitar-strumming. Cool. Might need to buy this album. From the 2012 album 'Tall Cans and Loose Ends'.

The Bouncing Souls — Comet. Fun, old-fashioned rock. Enjoyable, if dated.

Graveyard Johnnys — Won't Back Out. Unremarkable.

Carl Perkins — Blue Suede Shoes. I love the fact that Mike Davies puts this kind of stuff in the punk rock show! Something old every six songs keeps my interest :-)
1955 - this was the original that was covered by Elvis!

Pettybone — Pettybone. Screamy metal. Great for a head bang. Good for metal clubs.

Mongol Horde — Casual Threat From Weekend Hardmen. So this is Frank Turner's hardcore band, right? Who'd have thought! Who'd have thought! With their slide-guitar blues riffs, haunting violin and gypsyesque accordion sounds, Newton's Cider Press brought a bit of musical flavour to the lineup at The Silver Bullet last night. Despite suffering from some technical sound issues that left them looking a little defeated, some interesting and eclectic musical styles shone through. With an unpolished psychedelia sound and some nonchalant Lou Reed-style vocals, I was left thinking of The Velvet Underground. But then the violin interspersed with delicate female vocals had a real old skool folk flavour to them, reminiscent of bands from the 60s such as The Pentangle. Towards the end of the set they upped the pace with some blues riffs that went down a little better with the crowd. Although they played nothing that couldn't have been written 40 years ago, their sound was a none-the-less refreshing trip back to an era I was born too late to experience.
