on a weekend. Midway through the set Muph pointed out he had always wanted to do a show in the ‘Berra on a Saturday and finally he had his chance.
First up though was NewSense with Slime as a guest. They did their job of warming up the crowd, although with the A/C as it is in Transit Bar, there isn’t really too much to be done. To finish of the set, Wax Lyrical joined the others on stage for one final song.

The next support act was Horrorshow, an MC/DJ duo from Sydney. I was really impressed by MC Solo’s vocals. There isn’t too many Australian hip hop MCs that can actually sing.

Then in a longer break between sets, Insane In The Membrane was played as background music. I’ve never seen a crowd go so crazy for a song just played to fill in time.

Finally Muph & Plutonic began their set. As always they were brilliant, with the crowd getting rowdy on tracks like Beautiful Ugly. Heaps Good was a highlight, along with a short freestyle session from Muph.

Arriving ‘early’ at ANU bar, we were greeted by a few hundred people long queue at the door. Not even having pre-purchased tickets let anyone escape lining up. The queue moved at a snail’s pace, causing us to miss all but the last 2 of Pez’s set. Once we got in the door though, it was all positive with a full ANU Bar packed with 500 punters. It was an odd crowd most likely due to The Festival Song recent success.

Downsyde and Drapht performed a joint extended set, which was different. They switched back and forth, taking turns for each song to keep everything fresh. Pez even made a comeback for the finale, losing his shoe while attempting to crowd surf.

Earlier rumours floating around had hinted this would be the final block party, despite raising $18,000 for charity the previous year.

D'Opus & Roshambo played to the small early bird crowd. They delivered exactly as expected, although it must be hard to get pumped up so early in the afternoon.

DJ Just 1 played little 15 minute 'sets' in between each of the main acts. He played a good decent party mix, even dropping in some Hilltop Hoods. It's a shame it's a rarity when you here an Australian DJ play Australian music in set.

Next up were Melbourne's funk band, The Bamboos. Due to a change of plans, I didn't get to catch them on Boxing Day, so I was happy to see their name on the Block Party list. After playing a few tracks they were joined on stage by Kylie Audlist, who added some serious soul. A cover of The Meters 'I Need More Time', was one of many brilliant songs in fun set.

After some more Just 1 tunes, Good Buddha took to the stage. Ever since hearing futurhistrix I had been wanting to see them live. Their albums while great, always hint that would just work better played live. It was still a little to early on in the evening to get much crowd participation, so the whole set was a little subdued. I hadn't heard much of Good Buddhas new music, so it was comforting when they pulled out a few older tracks.


When Sampology and tom thum turned up next, I didn't really know what to expect. Luckily, they quickly explained what was about to go down. Tom Thum, a beat boxer of incredible skill was armed with a Kaoss Pad and an MPC. DJ Sampology had 2 decks, running Serato and an MPC of his own. All that equipment would allow for live sampling of Tom Thum's singing and beat boxing, to then be cut up by Sampology on the turntables. From the word go it was impressive. The crowd threw their heads back in disbelief as Tom Thum 'scratched' with his voice, followed by Sampology's copying. The two battled hard, bouncing off each other in a way that just worked. The set even included a 'celebrity chef' segment, featuring a number of Jamie Oliver samples on the MPC. Another highlight was DJ Shadow's classic 'Organ Donor' also done up on the MPC. It didn't take long for other acts backstage to take notice of Sampology and Tom Thum's wizardry, with the side of the stage packed with eager listeners.

After much hype from Goldfinger, P-Money came up next. Unfortunately there was a few technically difficulties and he couldn't get any sound from his decks. With a cheeky smile on his face, The New Zealander said "I can't get sound from my mixers bro," and a restless crowd was much more forgiving. Finally with things back in order, P-Money opened up the set with Scribe's 'Not Many'. It was a fantastic party set, which the crowd really got into.

The headline act, Tittsworth was up next. Hailing from New York he played an interesting set. It kept moving from hip hop party starter to more dancey type tunes as the BPM kept increasing. Then he'd drop it all the way back down to the beginning and build it up again.

Adam Freeland was a late, but highly welcomed inclusion to the Block Party line up. The crowd, already hyped up from Tittsworth was eager to keep things going and Adam Freeland didn't disappoint. The lights seemed to get brighter as the music got harder.

Once again block party lived up to my expectations. If only the beer was free, it might easily get confused with Heaven. It'll be a terrible shame if such a unique event gets shut down.
