Triple J Hottest 100 Of All Time Voting
I consider this to be a very hard task, I mean how can you leave out all of those songs that have supported & kept you sane over the years from a measly "top 10". However, I feel like I've whittled it down (begrudgingly) to the ones that have made an impact to how I listen to music or have somehow changed who I am. Here we go (in no particular order)...

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains
This one will always be a favourite, I can't deny that I am somewhat biast with this track over other Garbage songs. There are So many good times associated to this song for a good reason.
Notable mention: My Lover's Box

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
I deffinately think it'll be right up there in the count down. Very haunting & for that fact it was chosen above a number of Jeff's other songs.
Notable mention: Johnny Cash's version of Hurt

The B-52's - Rock Lobster
I was way too young to experience this song in the 80s but it's a much loved one now.

Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground
This song also had a big influence on the type of music I choose to listen to now days, the whole album was great. Just a bit of a pitty the singer & band went their separate ways.

Lamb - Fly
I don't think this song was ever released as a single but it probably should have been. I remember seeing them play this live back when the Palace in St Kilda was still around. Everyone in the audience just jumping so high & the music being pretty overwhelming.
Notable mention: Gorecki

The Breeders - Cannonball
Kim Deal is the shit...they are still making great albums even now.
Notalble mention: Drivin' on 9

Cat Power - Metal Heart
Chan Marshall has two versions of this song, the first verion from the album Moon Pix was a much more stark sounding one compared to the Jukebox one in which she had some help from new band members that definately influeced the song's new sound. Both are good choices for times of introspection.

Divinyls - Science Fiction
One of the best female led bands, can't go past firery redheads for good singers! Plus Science Fiction has one of the catchiest drum beats ever.

Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love
Great guitar riff, great gravely/gutsy female voice for a singer in the 50s. Wen't & saw her at the Corner Hotel a couple of years ago & she's still got it! This song made me realise how great music from the 50s actually was.

Patti Smith - Gloria
I have to say it, Patti's version is so much better than the original. She completely upped the anti for anyone else that would try to follow her footsteps.
Notable mention: Horses

Wed 6 Dec – Goodbye Motel, Leaves, ultimo
Melbourne outfit Goodbye Motel was the highlight of the night. Performing an original set, the band conveyed a unique sound that was at times dark and brooding, and at other times melodic and transcendent. The fluctuation between intense, dramatic crescendos and moments of instrumental deconstruction, where a full band would suddenly drop back to solo finger picking, was poignant. Within one song they would contrast high keyboard notes and vital melodies with heavy bass lines and drum beats. The frontman was a natural and charismatic performer, with an exceptional and haunting voice. His delivery was assured and undoubtedly evocative, perfectly complimenting the dynamic instrumental compositions. This band is another one to keep your eyes on.

Your new favourite band = Goodbye Motel

By Garrett Bithell & Claire Jarrett

Review from the Jager Uprising website

Fri 19 Jan – Goodbye Motel
I guess I could quickly say they sound a touch like a slightly less angst ridden early Radiohead. They may musically somewhat resemble Deathcab For Cutie but with a strong, soaring vocal replacing the little boy lost singing style of the Americans. There might be a bit of Muse in them with a little less pomp. You may even be put in mind of mid nineties Manics.

You'll possibly hear something of Kent or Jump Little Children too. What was that, you haven't heard of Kent or Jump Little Children? Probably just as well, they're not actually that similar, I was just showing off a little of my band knowledge…want to be my friend now?

Anyway, having failed in my good intentions I can say that regardless of who they may be compared to they have a great sound, and a sound that is still all their own. Powerful vocals, drumming tighter than Tara Reid's top in rainy season, great guitar work, bass lines that surge forward like Tara Reid to the bar at happy hour, huge electric flourishes permeating their catchy as hell songs; catchy as a Tara Re…OK I'll leave her alone now.

In all seriousness though, I challenge you to get their infectious songs out of your head after seeing one of their short and intense shows. There is no better evidence of which than the hook laden chorus to set opener Not Anymore. There are no shortage of further examples however; the melodic All That Bad or brooding slow-burner set it off being prime exhibits. Half way through their set and it's time to turn on the bright Operation Lights a wonderfully atmospheric and moody track that would not be out of place on an Interpol or Editors album; in fact it would illuminate either's repertoire. Things come to a perfect climax with the soaring Hell Out Of Here. All in all what more could you ask for? Some chums to go see their gigs with perhaps? When there is music this good to occupy your time though, who needs friends?

Adam Sharp
Indie Initiative
