That'll Show Him (from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum)

I saw a very very local production of this show a few years back. I remember enjoying it quite a bit. The music was great- just what I would expect from Mr. Stephen Sondheim. This is a short and sweet song sung by the female lead. Don't really think much of it out of context, but it's pleasant nonetheless.

I Really Love You Babe (Precision Debating)

T. Rex is my main man. This track is from Precious Star. I bought this album last October while I was in Los Angeles. I remember listening to this song in particular on the drive back to the hotel. It's repetitive, but has a good beat and swagger. Could possibly get annoying after a while, though. I'm glad it's just 3 minutes long. I believe the only lyrics are, in fact, "I really love ya, babe" repeated throughout the entire song. Marc has better, for sure.

Black Arrow, Bleeding Heart

I first heard of Whiskeytown from their cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams. I've always loved that cover so I naturally got hold of some original Whiskeytown stuff. It's a little twangy for my taste, but there's a sweetness in the singer's voice that keeps me from deleting them from my library.

Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted

I grew up knowing of The Partridge Family. I watched the TV show, I listened to the singles, I even watched that VH1 debacle, In Search of the Partridge Family back in '05. This particular song I'm not familiar with, but it's just as catchy as anything I have heard from them. Sunny 60s pop. Mmm, I do love me some Shirley Jones. (David Cassidy's okay, too.)

Steamworks

I've had The Presets in my library for some time now without having REALLY listened to what I'm hearing. I always had this preconception of them as some redundant electro indie act. And my assessment isn't totally far-fetched. There are many, many bands of the same nature. Although, this seems a little more sincere and creative than most of 'em. It's good- it doesn't really grab me, but that's generally how I feel about this genre. I like that there's no real singing.

Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours (1955)

First up, Frank Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours, released in 1955.

This album is documented as one of the first concept albums: a concept of a broken heart. Frank recorded this after his breakup with Ava Gardner. Hey, Frank- I'd be quite bummed, myself. Just look at her.

Anyway...

Right, the task.

I can't remember a time in my life I didn't know who Frank Sinatra was, or wasn't able to pick out his voice. It's kinda like The Beatles/The Featles. You're out of the womb singing Beatles songs. Frank Sinatra also happens to be my grandmother's favorite person to have ever lived, and that's including Ted Kennedy (I love you, Grandma). Point is, I'm familiar with the guy. However, I have never ventured outside of the many brilliant and overplayed/overused standards he recorded. I have one other Sinatra album, and that's The Best of the Capitol Years. So, I'm very intrigued to listen to this concept album of his.

Halfway through the album, it certainly is somber. A bit one-note, I'd say. Though, it IS a concept album! Not a very subliminal one, mind, but conceptual nonetheless. It's no doubt he has an exquisite voice. The music is beautifully arranged. Frank Sinatra is someone whose legacy and talents I can appreciate, despite not being my cup of tea, per se. I'm glad I arsed myself into listening to this album.

I never fully realized how solid, accomplished, and diverse Depeche Mode is until just a few days ago. I can't seem to kick it now. 3 days and counting of listening to only The Mode. I'm not one to go for days, hours even, continuously listening to one single band/group/artist. With Depeche, there's a song for every mood, feeling, and situation. It's like riding a roller coaster, really.

I am personally honored and fucking stoked to see them live next month.

With my own money, it was Fallen by Evanescence. Before that I remember most vividly Jennifer Page's Crush single, and Hanson's Middle Of Nowhere and 3 Car Garage.

First Concert:
For REAL real concert? Hanson at (the now defunct) Reunion Arena.

Favourite Concert:
I have a few favorite live acts I've seen: Midlake, Explosions in the Sky, Pilotdrift... but when talking about a concert you have to take into consideration the entire event. The openers, the crowd, the sound system....... I'm gonna have to go with a festival of sorts. It was in Fort Worth, and I forget the name of the thing, but IN A ROW I saw Midlake, Explosions in the Sky, and Ghostland Observatory. The crowd was way into all of it, the sound was fine, the midnight sky was starry and clear. Eased in with Midlake, upped the epic soundscapes with Explosions, and climaxed in erratic dance with Ghostland. It was perfect. Earlier in the evening as the sun started to go down, we sat in the grass drinking beer and watched (listened to) Pinback. That was a very relaxing time in my life.

I'm getting sick of these shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, and The O.C. using easy listening indie pop as a sounding board. I hate it all. It's sentimentalist crap. Um, I'm gonna have to go with American Idol. Really, they've been bringing in some class acts lately to perform for and mentor the contestants.
