10 - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon
Great little alternative rock album, completely with witty lyrics, awesome basslines and an abundance of cool.

9 - Thirst For Romance by Cherry Ghost
A really underrated album that I discovered whilst in London in 2007. Some of the best folk/easy listening I have found.

8 - The Crane Wife by The Decemberists
(Their inclusion on this list is the album including its bonus tracks). The reason I note the bonus tracks is because 'The Culling of the Fold' is just sheer brilliance. The whole album is an amazing, tragic tale, and is in my opinion, the jewel in The Decemberists' crown. That is, with the exception of Valerie Plame

7 - Kid A by Radiohead
Radiohead is undeniably one of the greatest bands of our generation, and perhaps, all-time. This is my favourite of their albums. Released in 2000, the album acts as a wake up call for the oncoming millennium. The electronic bent that they took was drastically different to past albums, and I believe that here it is perfect. Oh, also, it has Idioteque on it, one of my favourite songs.

6 - Small Change by Tom Waits
Drunkeness + Piano Crooning = This album in all its glory. Tom Wait's raspy voice goes from heartfelt, to lively and even to salesperson-y in Step Right Up.

5 - Narrow Stairs by Death Cab For Cutie
My first introduction to Death Cab was late last year whilst over in America. Needless to say, the very nature of travel meant that I was able to listen to this album over and over again and so each of the tracks on here I am very familiar with and adore both individually and as a whole.

4 - The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
I must admit I have not listened to this album in its entirety. I mean, I've heard each track individually, but not as a whole. This is because I discovered The Smiths through their best of collections. But, the reason this album is able to land itself at number 4 is because of these individual songs. Most of them are great. Some of them I would list in my favourite songs ever. Especially There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

3 - Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd
It was a very hard decision putting this at Number 3. Not because it is any less that no. 3, but rather that it might be more. This is the album of life. Listen to it form beginning to end. It is a transcendent experience that cannot be matched by any album on this list.

2 - Thriller by Michael Jackson
The reason that this album nabs number 2 is that it has the greatest middle section EVER. From The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney) to P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) is perfection. In all its popstar glory, Thriller gets the silver.

1 - Rain Dogs by Tom Waits
I only found this album recently. In fact, it was around my birthday this year, in July. I had just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and had discovered that in a deleted scene Joel and Clementine discuss this album. Now, in my daze of gushing over that brilliant film, I got my hands on this album. I had heard Tom Waits before, but only one or two songs, and I was repelled by his voice. But, for some strange reason, its seemed alluring. The songs took me to another world, dingy as that world may have been, it was a strange form of escapism that time and time again forced me to return to this 19-song epic. It was the absurdism that did it for me. The verse that always stays with me?

"The captain is a one-armed dwarf,
he's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind
the one-eyed man is king, so take this ring"

Also, I'm going to limit it to 5 things, whether it be an album, artist, song etc.

Here we go:

1. Tom Waits
Tom Waits is amazing. Before this month, I really had no interest in his music at all. I didn't like his hoarse, croaky voice, I thought he sounded strange. But for some strange reason, I checked out his music. I take that back, it was not a strange reason that led me to Tom Waits. In actuality, it was finding a reference to the album in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry, 2004), one of my favourite films ever. The reference was to his album Rain Dogs. This album is now one of my all time favourites. The evocative music, the sharp, funny, descriptive lyrics just drew me in and eventually I got to absolutely love his voice, it just sounds so dark and evil. After checking out that album, I moved onto Small Change, to see his earlier musical style. Different, but still brilliant. Step Right Up is one of my favourite songs ever, although I don't know whether or not to call it spoken word...

2. Actor
This album is close to being my favourite of the year, up there with Bitte Orca and Dark Night Of The Soul et al. This is plain and simple a brilliant album. The vocals are stunning, the piano is haunting. Just a great album to immerse yourself in.

3. Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
Look at this band name. Just look at it. Need I say more?

4. Song for MJ (Remember The Time)
In lieu of MJ's passing, there was a flood of tributes, covers, remixes all dedicated to the King of Pop. And whilst there were a lot of covers that stood out for me, aided by my greater interest in MJ's music (incl. finding my fave MJ song, Human Nature), this remix just blew me away. If you are a fan of MJ's or even if you barely know his work, listen to this.

5. Kitsuné Maison
This record label is stunning. I discovered them through Phoenix and then found that they are the label of my two favourite songs of 2009 so far, Lisztomania and Something Good Can Work. This month, Through them I found: La Roux,Heartsrevolution and You Love Her Coz She's Dead
