I knew that The Gates of Slumber were on tour, what I didn't know was that they'd be coming around so quickly. Friday afternoon it suddenly came to my attention that they'd be playing in San Francisco on Saturday night. The Elbo Room is a cool place, but way too small to be playing through full stacks. Struck by Lightning opened and it was so loud that all you could hear was a wall of noise, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except that their style of playing is a bit more technical than that. Too bad I couldn't hear what they were playing. Fortunately, The Gates of Slumber were up next playing a short but very satisfying set. When it comes to traditional doom metal, these guys really can't be beat, Frank Frazetta album covers and all! I would have liked to have seen Weedeater, but it was just too loud and I must be getting too old, so we left. I was much more active on Last.fm this year than last year, especially later in the year and I was exploring a lot of music, so there weren't too many albums that got played to death. Still others charted high, simply because of the vast number of tracks per album (hooray for hardcore!). Well, that's the year wrapped up in a neat little package. I'm eager to see how 2010 turns out.
