Why a SQUAIDS FAQ?

The Know Your Meme page on SQUAIDS is wrong. The SQUAIDS page on Facebook is wrong. The SQUAIDS page on Urban Dictionary is (mostly) wrong. The SQUAIDS page on Answers.com is wrong. The SQUAIDS page on Newtribez is wrong. The many Answers on Yahoo! Answers are wrong. Etc, etc, etc.

Is SQUAIDS Real?

Yes. As I say in my earlier post SQUAIDS is a real disease that affects the Red Squirrel indigenous to the UK. It is properly called the "squirrel pox virus", I thought SQUAIDS was more catchy and funnier, if sick. Either way, it gets the point across.

It is carried by the (not native) grey squirrels, who are larger and more aggressive than the reds. Today in England (as far as I know) the only place you can still see red squirrels is on one small island off the south coast of the UK. This makes me sad :(

Here it is reported by the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/5189252.stm and here's some research from 2005 about the disease first being found in Scotland http://www.jyi.org/news/nb.php?id=314

(c)A Kefford

Really??

Yes. I invented the terms SQUAIDS on this blog. RWJ did not invent the term although he claims to on his blog ("This Ray William Johnson Internet meme feature talks about a hilarious meme that Ray created..."), although originally he never claimed to have invented it. I posted the mix I did to raise awareness of the very real disease on last.fm, and cross-posted it to mixcloud (so it could be streamed), where I'm pretty sure he first saw it.

Can humans catch SQUAIDS?

No, dumbass.

Why this page?

Firstly due to all the disinformation.

Secondly, when I saw RWJ had taken the idea and popularised it (I only saw this months later after googling "SQUAIDS"), I really didn't care. I do not share his sense of humour, although he clearly shares mine to some extent :)

But when I saw he was a) missing the point (that red squirrels are really dying -- I haven't seen one since I was a small boy) and b) selling merchandise off the meme with no benefit to our dying squirrel buddies, I got a little annoyed and wanted to set the record straight. This is the only beef I have with the whole situation.

Some Good News

Good news is, some Reds have been found that are immune to the disease, according to this scientific article scientists "have found eight cases of free-living red squirrels that apparently managed an immune response to the deadly virus and even survived infection". But fears are it may be too little, too late -- even for other countries with larger Red populations, such as Italy.

Where Does The Image Come From?

I made the image for my mix. The photo is by ndanger and comes from flickr. I used it cos I make zero money of this and it's for a good cause. It's a great pic.

So, there you go. Feel free to comment.

The World Wide Web is a terrible, corrupting influence on the world and it is our duty, as relatively sane adults, to destroy it. This would have never happened in my day.

The fact that I can, in the title of this journal entry, refer to the WWW as "Teh INternets" no longer with a trace of irony, is symptomatic of this malaise. The fact that I can write this journal entry in a public forum where few will read it and less give a shit, is symptomatic of this malaise. "Oh QQ Gorsefan" you may cry, but please indulge me for a moment.

A brief persual of "vlogs" on youtube.com (which should be our first target, comrades) delineates with surgical precision the horrific intersect between the barely-comprehensible gushings of teenagers seeking self-affirmation & the mac-wearing, middle-aged one-handed surfers they (mostly) unwittingly attract. There seems to be something of a meme around declaring their own "Aaaasomness" (I am not refering to "Project for Awesome"). Whilst they are indeed Awesome, they seem ignorant of the true nature of their Awesomeness -- namely the awe-inspiring, inky depths to which a human mind devoid of worthy cultural influence, a basic comprehension of the language spoken, or a dictionary, may sink. Or rather, may fail to rise.

A first step in obtaining some mental yeast would be the purchase of a dictionary. I would encourage all "vlog"-ers for their next thrilling installment to film themselves

a) buying a dictionary
b) reading it cover to cover on camera, out loud, and then
c) beating themselves around the face with it

The latter point may seem purely spiteful on my part, but my reasoning is sound. Any bruises (which a dictionary worthy of the name would certainly endow) would serve as a sharp reminder the next morning of the previous evening's events, and therefore as a further reminder of the duty they hold to themselves, and the planet as a whole, to be quiet until they stop being fucking idiots.

Now, I am not wholly against youtube "vlogs". But only for the reason previously described, i.e. they neatly demark a realm sure to be chock-full of vacuous self-publishing. The irony of the "vacuous self-publishing" bit is not lost upon me.

Once upon a time this kind of outpouring could be stumbled upon anywhere on the Web. Then Geoshitties and the like enabled the unwashed masses to publish their own inane warblings to the uncaring universe with little technical knowledge. As the barriers to entry lower, so does the quality, until we reach the current situation where it is incredibly easy to "vlog" dross on youtube.com.

Good. Not only am I now in little danger of accidentally encountering said mental slurry whilst looking for actual worthy content on the Web, we also have our first targets in the drive to improve the human race and quality of life on this fragile planet we all share.

I KNOW YOU ARE WITH ME COMRADES!

Was playing with playlists and thought I'd find what full-length freeness last.fm has. Stuck to 80's drum-machine hip hop for this one. Tons of stuff I wanted that just ain't on here full-length, but what's here is still Stupid Fresh, yo -- stupid!

STUPID FRESH YO

Hello Homes, I hope the oh-eight finds you absent of wackness.

My dear new friends from the internet have been asking me what's going to be Down in the New Year, flagbearer of all things Fresh as I indupitably am.

Well, my nuh in Illadelph hit me up on my portable telephony device to let me know that William Smith is due to stop being a cock and get back with Ready Rock C and Jazzy Jazzy "his name is" Jeff to make a Supa Dope new LP, so keep an eye open in your local gramophone emporium for that.

Also I predict that in dear old Blighty, Dubstep will continue to rattle bins everywhere, watch out for stringsed-up interpretations by MJ Cole and sampladelic versions by those cut 'n' paste maestros Jive Bunny to be topping the hit parade in the spring. Most definitely right up my steez.

I must go now, as Reginald in 36A got some new pumps for Christmas and wants to Battle, the daft old codger, does he not know my Mighty Rep? I'll crush his wack ass.

Farewell my little crumpets, be good.
