Thu 29 Mar – Supersuckers, Nikkeby Lufthavn

Supersuckers - The Greatest Rock'n'Roll band in the World came, rocked and conquered :-) Well, they rocked hard enough for Tromsø at the very least, and it's safe to say that everybody had a good time.

It's hard not to be infected by the apparent joy that Eddie Spaghetti and his posse of misplaced cowboys find in playing their music on stage. A band with bigger egos would probably scoffed at playing Driv, a pub run by the student community of Tromsø, but the Suckers (I may call you that, right, mr Spaghetti?) enjoyed themselves and gave us a great show.

Supersuckers is a great showband, and have been watching their ZZ Top-videos, although Dan "Thunder" Bolton has a long way to go before he can compete with Gibbon and Hill in a beard competition. A lot of guitar slinging, good tunes and some hilarious jamming (I even got a few The Allman Brothers Band-vibes at times, but that may be stretching it) ensured that I couldn't stop smiling. I even smiled the entire way home, which is impressive considering that I had to drive for over an hour under terrible conditions and knew that I had to get up at 6 in the morning to be a dad.

Although Classic Rock dismisses Supersuckers after their latest gig in London, I don't. Perhaps Londoners are spoiled for choice, but the people of the far north are not. And when the entire band plays the bass, how can a simple bass player resist the Suckers' charm?

A band in pursuit of awesomeness, as represented by their totem animal, the Jackalope, should never be dismissed!

***
It would be unfair not to mention the other band on the bill, Nikkeby Lufthavn, the "northernmost punkrock band in Norway, maybe in the World!", according to themselves. They rocked too, and I especially loved the "theremin, organ and luscious harmonies" of Mona. Psychedelic punk... How can you go wrong? I'll be in attendance next time they play a gig!

I recently moved to the middle of nowhere (Storsteinnes in Norway, although one could make the point that Oslo, the capital of Norway, where I used to live, is hardly the center of the universe), a place where the gospel of rock is rarely preached and live gigs are hard to come by. Not even decent Norwegian acts (like Motorpsycho or Thulsa Doom) play here.

And in order to prove that there's a conspiracy somewhere, I just learnt that Clutch, one of my favorite bands, is playing in Oslo. Not long after I have moved. Coincidence?

Anyway, I desperately wanna go! And I will, provided I can arrange a babysitter. I must! I shall!!! I will see Clutch in Oslo. My daughter will understand, even though I have to leave on her birthday. I guess I'm just a Bad Daddy...

(In all fairness: This is the only time I can do this. It's her first birthday, and she's not aware of it as such, and we will celebrate it when I get back. Next year she will KNOW it's her birthday and I'm assuming Daddy may NOT leave.)

Sometimes when I listen to music, I come across something so truly unbelievable that it transforms my life. Led Zeppelin was the first. Iron Maiden was probably the second. Then a lot of years went by until I discovered Mountain and the classical bass lines of Felix Pappalardi. Then Clutch walked into my life. I bought "Blast Tyrant" and "Robot Hive/ Exodus" based solely upon the covers. I had to have them. They spoke unto me. Then I heard "The Snowgoose" by Camel, and fell in love with the whimsical approach to rock'n'roll. And the way the story unfolds!?! Beautiful. I recently heard Cactus. (I know, where have I been? Marooned on a desolate planet?) But they also restored a lost pice of my soul.
