I suppose I should randomly namecheck a bunch of artists so that people read this... I've been listening to a lot of Merzbow recently - you can probably hear the influence. After finally getting round to listening to it properly it's taken over Winterkälte's position as my favourite noise artist of all time. I've also recently come to the conclusion that Coreline is currently the pinnacle of musical history - partly because of being really really good, but also because of the range of influences and the rare combination of being great music but also quite accessible. We called ourselves The Sand People are Easily Startled but They will be back in Greater Numbers but unfortunately we only got to record one track. I quite like that track, though, as it has a certain feel to it.

Anyway, I've just noticed that last.fm has generated a list of similar artists to The Sand People are Easily Startled but They will be back in Greater Numbers and it's an inspiring mix of completely brilliant, completely stupid music, most of it heavily chiptune-influenced.

I'm posting it here because I happen to know there's a big update to the similarity algorithm coming soon and I want to preserve the list for future reference. And also because this connects my music to the profiles of dozens of obscure artists, perhaps bringing a listener or two.

Finally I might as well take the opportunity to plug my current musical project, Escape from the Head Cube. Not-too-serious experimental music with a DIY ethos, created by writing my own software, which I control live using joysticks. You might like it...

I'm pretty impressed with it. There's a lot of really interesting music that I hadn't heard of before, along with one or two of my influences, mostly oriented towards the noise end of the musical spectrum.

Generally I find this to be a good way to find new music on last.fm: find some incredibly obscure but good noise project created by some random person in their bedroom, and play their similar artist station. Because anyone who's gone to the effort to seek that music out will also have found loads of other unknown treasures. And now it seems that my project is no exception.

The tracks currently available on last.fm were all made using free software running under linux. kthnk and Paroxetine are attempts at noise music whereas Souled has more of a mellow electronica sound. It's also interesting because it's not in the same 12-note scale as most western music, it's in one I made up as I went along by writing a computer program to generate notes of different frequencies.

I'm currently working on a way of playing my music live, and eventually I'll be releasing some new tracks that are produced this way. If you're interested you can keep track of my progress on my weblog
