Today I heard what is to be the next single from Patrick Wolf, Accident & Emergency. I'd been slightly sceptical, for I'd heard that he was aiming for a more commercial - perhaps even too commercial - direction with his music. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it; not disappointed in the least. He certainly appears to be going for a more contemporary sound, and is bound to gain a significant increase in recognition from such, but the brilliant thing is he hasn't left behind his original sound. By maintaining the uniqueness that people love in his work and putting a poppy twist on that, he's created a fantastic piece of work which means he will attract a wider fanbase - which he undoubtedly deserves - without alienating those who fell in love with his previous music. I'm in love with it, and as ever the lyrics are beautiful, striking... I cannot wait until February to hear The Magic Position. Also, lately I think I've only just begun to properly appreciate the beauty of his music. From the first time I heard Patrick I liked what he did, but I've been listening to him a fair amount lately and am in awe of his talent. I love his ability to display vulgarity but retain a childlike innocence about him; he truly is one of a kind. Ultimate confirmation of a devotion I have for a musical act comes when I have a desperate want to see them live - I am dying to see Patrick Wolf live, now.

On the subject of live music, next week - Saturday 30th September, to be exact - I'm seeing Maxïmo Park for what will be the second time this year, third time overall. The first time I didn't appreciate it as much as I should've done, since I wasn't incredibly interested in the band at that point, but now it's come full circle. This band's music means a lot to me, and knowing this is going to be the last chance I'll get to see them live for a while saddens me, but I am pleased I've taken my chances to see them on both occasions this year. Paul Smith's lyrics touch me so much, I can't think of any other band that have affected me so much - I'm obscenely excited about next Saturday, to say the least. I absolutely fucking adore Maxïmo Park.

They're being supported by Love Is All and Blood Red Shoes. For once I am pretty impressed with the quality of the support acts, but I am slightly disheartened by the fact that Hot Club De Paris are supporting at later dates on this tour, hence meaning I will miss them. They're very quirky, and having been praised and raved about by none other than Paul himself, I can't say I'm too happy that they're not appearing at the Glasgow show. Just to rub salt in the wounds, I purchased tickets to see Dirty Pretty Things later in the year – who are also being supported by Hot Club De Paris, but again: not in Glasgow. It's a shame, but Mando Diao and of course the divine Larrikin Love will make up for that.

Re: Dirty Pretty Things. Their song Wondering is a real favourite of mine. It's an absolute beauty. Brilliantly sing-along-able, pretty stirring as well, it's welled me up a good few times. Carl Barât is a truly inspiring character, in my opinion.

A band I've recently become fond of, also, are Sonic Youth. I don't know what took me so long, they've been recommended to me before, but I'd heard some describe them as "weird" and gave them a miss. The thing is though, they've been about for absolutely ages and still make brilliant music. I've yet to hear something of theirs I don't like. Dirty is a fantastic album, and I intend to blow some money on either Goo or Washing Machine tomorrow.

Anybody have any particular recommendations, of sorts?

On Thursday night I went to see Maxïmo Park at Edinburgh Corn Exchange, supported by The Dykeenies & The Research.

The Dykeenies opened the show, and put on a brilliant performance. They're Scottish (like myself xD) and are absolutely fantastic, they're excellent live, so if you ever get the oppurtunity to attend one of their gigs I'd strongly recommend you take it.

The Research weren't all that impressive, it has to be said. They're a bit flat, marginally better live than they are on record, but that doesn't say much. Even though I'm not a fan I tried to go in with an open mind, but they're not my cup of tea to be honest. So I'd give them a miss - don't waste your money unless you are a dedicated fan and can see something in them which the rest of us can't.

Maxïmo Park, on the other hand, were absolutely mind-blowing. Their set was flawless - maybe I'm just biased, but... seriously, there's so much passion and energy in their live performance that it's impossible not to get carried away in it. Paul Smith is such an amazing frontman, and oh God I love this band more than anything.

Set highlights?
...it's so hard to choose just a few.
•A19 was tremendous, I got such a rush the moment I heard the opening riff, I love it a lot more live.
•By The Monument may have been my favourite song of the set, even though it's a new one I've heard the live version and I was actually almost in tears during this, it's a gorgeous song.
•A Year Of Doubt was an unexpected yet pleasant surprise, it sounds a lot different live, more emphasis on the rhythm section than in the recorded version. Which gave Paul many an oppurtunity for sexy dancing, so that made me happy.
•The Night I Lost My Head was just... fantastic. It's never been my favourite Maxïmo Park song, but after hearing it then I love it so much more. Amazing.
•The encore of Kiss You Better, Nosebleed and Apply Some Pressure was the perfect end to the show. Kiss You Better is so sweet, and I was really pleased to finally hear Nosebleed live since I've only got the acoustic version. All the new tracks are very promising. And of course, Apply Some Pressure was indescribable. I felt all melancholy at the end of the song, knowing that was it, but I came away feeling ecstatic and as though my £15 was more than worth it. Even the tiredness, pain and sickness the next day - I'd go through it all again, anytime to experience that all over again.

Seriously, go see Maxïmo Park live, you won't regret it.

1. Maxïmo Park
How I Got Into Them: Well, I remember everyone going absolutely apeshit last year. I'd only heard Graffiti and Going Missing and I thought... what a load of shite, they sound the same as everything else =/ So I gave up on them... this was during my Kaiser Chiefs phase, so when it was announced that they & The Cribs would be supporting, I downloaded a few songs by each. For the Park that was Going Missing, Graffiti, Apply Some Pressure (all three of those turned out to be the demos, LOL =/) and Kiss You Better. Then I heard Apply Some Pressure on the radio one day and was singing along and thought... that sounds familiar. So pretty much I went along to the NME Rock'n'Roll Riot Tour and was fucking blown away by them, and became obsessed with their music... and Paul Smith.
First Song: Errrm I think it may've been Going Missing.
Favourite Song: It's between La Quinta, My Life In Reverse and Surrender... although with 500-odd plays, I'm gonna have to say La Quinta aren't I?

2. Franz Ferdinand
How I Got Into Them: Well. I remember being all Evanescence-obsessed at the time, and then I heard Take Me Out on the radio and thought WTF IS THIS SHIT. I thought it was a joke at first... well the first thing that really hit me about it was it was so different. As time went on it kind of grew on me... then I was at my cousin's house and saw the video for Dark Of The Matinee on one of the music channels and went straight out to buy the album. *nod* And I never looked back. *tear* THEY CHANGED MY LIFE!
First Song: Take Me Out
Favourite Song: Oh you've got to be kidding me... erm... I normally say Auf Achse, but I don't really know. So we'll just say Auf Achse again.

3. The Libertines
How I Got Into Them: Welllllllll I saw them do Can't Stand Me Now on Jonathon Ross, and have liked them since. I've only been into them properly for about a year and a half though. Yes, I'm rubbish.
First Song: Can't Stand Me Now
Favourite Song: Up The Bracket

4. We Are Scientists
How I Got Into Them: Errrr. I read a thing about them in the NME late last year and downloaded NMNGH, and just had that one song for ages before I realised I really bloody liked it, and downloaded the album. THEN I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I WAS OBSESSED AND FELT BAD.
First Song: Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt
Favourite Song Either Mucho Mas or Inaction

5. Kaiser Chiefs
How I Got Into Them: I remember... someone banging on about them constantly and being really obsessed with them at the very beginning of last year/just before that, it was around the whole explosion of Kaiser Chiefs/Bloc Party/etc and I heard OMG and I thought it was alright... I really sort of detested them for some reason, and I couldn't stand Ricky. Then everyone was going on about I Predict A Riot so I downloaded it and thought 'shit... these are really fucking good' so I bought their album not that long after it came out, and ta-da.
First Song: Oh My God!
Favourite Song: Born To Be A Dancer

6. Muse
How I Got Into Them: Saw them performing Time Is Running Out on telly somewhere and thought they were too heavy for me... and I got practically forced to hear Absolution so I did. And fell in love with it at once.
First Song: Time Is Running Out
Favourite Song: AGHH. I love Citizen Erased, and Hysteria. Invincible's my favourite off the new album.

7. Dirty Pretty Things
How I Got Into Them: Downloaded some of the live stuff from last year purely because it was Carl Barât's new band, and ended up with about 875939857340295347890572 versions of Bang Bang You're Dead on the computer. I thought they were a bit samey at first, but the album leaked and I soon got obsessed with it.
First Song: You Fucking Love It live in... somewhere
Favourite Song: *ponders* The Gentry Cove.

8. The Automatic SaRah sent me Monster ages ago, and then I downloaded Raoul and Recover, and then the album leaked. Then I bought it. *shrug* Boring, I know.
First Song: Monster
Favourite Song: Jack Daniels

9. The Cribs
I heard So Here We Are, then Silent Alarm was Album of The Week on Beat 106 (now XFM Scotland) so I made sure I listened to it every night because each night they'd play a track from it. And I bought it on the Saturday after it came out.
