Thanks to the Film Music Society, us non-Italian speakers can finally know what Ennio Morricone actually said as he accepted his Oscar, instead of relying on a marred translation by a near-sighted Eastwood. Viva Ennio!

What Ennio Really Said to Oscar


In the interests of both accuracy and the historical record of Academy events, we consulted with Giulio Ongaro, associate professor of music history and literature at the USC Thornton School of Music. Ongaro, who was born in Italy, reviewed the tape and offered the following translation of Morricone's speech:

"I want to thank the Academy for this honor. I also want to thank all of those who very strongly supported the idea that this award should be given to me.

"I also want to thank all of the directors who have called me, and given me their trust, to write music for their movies. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for them.

"My thoughts also go to all of the artists who deserve this award but never received it. I wish for them to receive it in the not-too-distant future.

"I believe that this award is coming not at a point of arrival, but at a starting point – to improve my work not just in the service of movies, but also in the service of my personal aesthetics on applied music.

"I dedicate this Oscar also to my wife Maria, who loves me very much and who has been so close to me all these years. I love her in the same way. This award is also for her."

Morricone's arrival on stage was greeted by a 50-second standing ovation and at least one shout of "Viva Ennio!" from the balcony at the Kodak Theater. Standing by during his moment of triumph – as he held his Oscar high – was singer Celine Dion, who offered the debut performance of "I Knew I Loved You," a theme from Once Upon a Time in America with new lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

The Maestro, The Music, The Specs

On the way out of Ennio Morricone's Radio City concert debut, a concertgoer joked about a Morricone bobble-head. Which got me wondering, especially in the wake of all the Oscar attention: is the greatest thing about Morricone his peerless arrangements, heavenly melodies.. or that iconic, hard-lined stare? If there's one thing about Morricone that doesn't often get said, it's that him and his glasses are awfully photogenic. In the course of my Morricone fever over the past year, I've come across what seems like hundreds of different shots of the Maestro, all in his latter years. The pictures of this guy are endless. And you can rarely date the photos, because Morricone at 45 looks about the same as Morricone at 78.

The only photo I can recall seeing of Morricone *without* his distinguishable glasses was in the programme for the Radio City concert, where he looks quite.. pre-Leone, if anything. I arrived at 4pm, an hour before their final closing--no one but the owner(s) in the store, making sporadic cracks about hank williams and erectile dysfunction. lots of classic rock, but I went solely for the obscure/camp in order to strengthen my future sample library. scored 31 records in all for a dollar each, which was all I had money for right then, though I could have easily spent hundreds. the list:
