Sat 16 Jun – Muse

There are sure to be many, many reviews for this event. Maybe some will be negative, but I can assure you that the majority will be journals by people who have realised that on Saturday 16th June 2007 they saw the best musical spectacle of their lives.

It's mid-afternoon, and the drenched but fairly upbeat crowd are clapping along to the Hispanic strummings of Rodrigo y Gabriela. This two-piece ooze talent as they slip a couple of covers into their set of flamenco pieces. Obviously delighted by the opportunity to play to such a huge crowd, their happiness was echoed by the fans; who were pretty much amazed by their ability and the fact that the wall of sound entering their ears was coming from just two guitars.

Dirty Pretty Things were up next, and unfortunately didn't live up to the sound of their 2006 debut album. They seemed at times distracted and not sure of what to think of the crowd in front of them. The stadium sound was not in favour of a band like them, the lead guitar often being drowned out by the drums and other instruments. Things perked up for their last two songs, but other than that it was a performance to forget for Carl Barat's band. Oh and the three new songs they played didn't sound particularly good either.

To set us up for Muse was Mike Skinner, AKA The Streets. It was difficult beforehand to see this being a success, but he pulled it off brilliantly. His charm and humour won the crowd and got them moving quite a bit to his summery tunes. Ending their set with their most famous song, Fit But You Know It, was a good move, as it was probably the song that most of the people in the stadium knew, and gave the night a party atmosphere. As The Streets left the stage the crowd were in full expectation for the band they had come to see.

At about quarter to nine the stadium lights dimmed and dramatic music was played over the loudspeakers. All eyes were on the stage as the crowd surged forward, and suddenly a mass of lights and confetti exploded from just outside of the golden circle and it was Muse! The three of them strode down a path running through the pitch and launched into a awe-inspiring rendition of Knights of Cydonia. The crowd were jumping up and down as one as the screen behind the band and the "satellite" style strobe lights jumped into life, as Muse stormed through Hysteria, Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique and City of Delusion. The pace slowed a bit for Butterflies and Hurricanes (just the piano bit, mind) and this led into one of the high points of the night: Citizen Erased. This epic 7 minute long song had the crowd's eyes fixed on the stage, amazed at what they were seeing. Matt Bellamy then took to the piano, and the band played Hoodoo, Feeling Good and Sunburn, which Bellamy introduced as "the first track from our first album".

The high point of the night was, surprisingly for a Muse show, when they played a couple of slow songs. Matt Bellamy said of Soldier's Poem, "this is for all the un sung heroes". This was followed by Unintended, which delighted the majority of fans, as it is a rarely played song from their debut album, Showbiz. Blackout was the next song, and for the first time in the night, fan's eyes were not directed at the stage. Two balloons, from which a "Cirque du Soleil" style acrobat was suspended, seemingly floated down the sides of the golden circle. This led to the song having another dimension, the crowd were transfixed by the silver women in harnesses gracefully doing slow rotations in the air. Muse then left the stage, but returned quite soon for a four song encore which consisted of Plug In Baby, Micro Cuts, Stockholm Syndrome and Take A Bow. The opener of Black Holes and Revelations is undecided by Muse fans on whether it should be the opener or closer of the band's live shows, but as the song built up into a fantastic climax, no one really cared, because, it worked.

We left feeling glad that we didn't have to get the train back via the packed Wembley Park tube, and knowing, sadly, that we had just seen the show of our lives.

Muse played-
Knights of Cydonia
Hysteria
Supermassive Black Hole
Map of the Problematique
City Of Delusion
Butterflies And Hurricanes
Citizen Erased
Hoodoo
Feeling Good
Sunburn
Invincible
Starlight
Man of Mystery
Time Is Running Out
New Born
Soldier's Poem
Unintended
Blackout

Plug In Baby
Micro Cuts
Stockholm Syndrome
Take a Bow

The Hours- Narcissus Road

If experience was everything, then The Hours would be quickly on their way to world domination. Having worked with Jarvis Cocker and Joe Strummer among others, Anthony Genn and musical partner Martin Slattery are in a better position than most “new” bands to release their debut album. As we all know, experience isn’t everything. But bloody hell do they have talent too.

Narcissus Road is an album of elegance and beauty, and at the same time one of thumping drum beats and vocals that cut into your ears like a razorblade. The songs become imprinted into your mind from the first listen, stand out tracks “Narcissus Road” and “Back When You Were Good”, to be honest, are chart material. Meanwhile the more moving tracks, such as “I Miss You” and “People Say” (both deal with the subject of Genn’s father) make this 35 year old singer and guitarist’s problems and experiences seem like your own.

The band wouldn’t be complete without Slattery’s timeless piano playing, often changing pace midway through songs, “Love You More” being a prime example of this. Narcissus Road is a fantastic debut from maybe the oldest new band in the country, and is deserving of a place in anyone who calls themself a music fan’s record collection. And lastly, if you get the chance to see them live, boy is it an experience you’ll remember.

9/10

Lots of people consider The Libertines first album "Up The Bracket" to be better than their second, the self-titled one. I however, think the 2nd is better, and find songs like Time for heroes and I Get Along not as good as some people make out. Sure, they're good, but not as good as the likes of Can't Stand Me Now and What Katie Did in my opinion. It maybe down to what album you heard first, I heard the 2nd album first and this might be why I prefer it to Up The Bracket. Can anyone who prefers Up The Bracket (and there's a few of you) please tell me why?

Arctic Monkeys debut album is fantastic and I think they are a very good band. However, I think the Ep/single Who the fuck are Arctic Monkeys? was nowhere near as good and neither is the new single Leave before the lights come on, added to this that the bassist has left, is the band's stint in the limelight fading? They're out of their "honeymoon period" and now only their follow up album will decide if they are a truly great band or not. I hope this isn't the case but I fear they maybe a one-album-wonder. Any thoughts?

Radiohead Muse Red Hot Chili Peppers
