Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,

I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

2. What song makes you sad?
Eh, that's sort of an obtuse question. A lot of the music I listen to could be considered "sad" to the casual observer. There are quite a few songs that make me cry, but the reasoning behind it is a bit more complicated than "the song makes me sad." To get a sense of what I'm hinting at, here, I'd suggest tracking down The Secret Life of the Love Song, which is a lecture Cave gave that explores this territory much more articulately than I ever could.

3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
The most annoying song? Hard to say, but I'm pretty sure that I've hated everything ever recorded by Gary Puckett, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, and Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons, with special emphasis on Big Girls Don't Cry

4. Your all time favorite band?
Probably Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

5. Your newly discovered band is?
Birds of Wales, although I'm not entirely sure of how I feel about them, yet.

6. Best female voice?
That's a hard one; let's see.... Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Neko Case, and Brodie Armstrong from The Distillers.

7. Best male voice?
Tom Waits, Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, Chet Baker, Rufus Wainwright, and many others.

8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
A lot of roots stuff - country blues, delta blues, bluegrass, Appalachian, "hillbilly", Americana, traditional Irish, English, and Welsh music, Eastern European folk, work and labour songs, etc. - and contemporary musicians who draw inspiration from, and have an obvious affection and respect for, roots music.

9. What do you listen to, to hype you up?
Gogol Bordello, Taraf de Haidouks, cracow klezmer band, Kocani Orkestar, The Birthday Party, The Ramones, The Misfits, Nekromantix, tsol, The Damned, The Clash, The Stooges, etc.

10. What do you listen to when you want to calm down?
I don't know, really. King of America and Your New Boundaries come to mind. Other than that, eh.

11. Last gig/concert you went to?
Gogol Bordello at Irving Plaza, New York, NY, two days before Christmas. Awesome.

12. Band you find yourself listening to the most right now?
Well, she's not a band, but Meiko Kaji, and Raining Pleasure, a band to which I was introduced, via my last.fm neighbourhood radio.

13. Most hated band?
Train, and everyone mentioned in question #3.

14. Song that makes you think?
All of them.

15. Band that you think the world should love as much as you do?
I'm far too pretentious and elitist to answer this question. ;)

16. Coolest music video?
Do they still make those? Wow. I will always, always love the video for Take On Me; it's a classic. Oh, I also love Coffee & TV.

17. Music video with the most babe watch?
If that means what I think it means, Need You Tonight. This captivated me, at five years old, for reasons I was only able to fully understand, many years later. Also, in high school, I really liked the video for Happiness in Slavery, as it featured a mud-splattered Trent Reznor in a big cage.

18. What do you play/would you play in the bedroom to spice things up?
Your New Boundaries, because I like my sex like I like my furniture - stark and vaguely unsettling.

19. Can you play a musical instrument?
I'm primarily a singer, although I play a mean clarinet, (not kidding), some piano, and some guitar, (I'm shit at those, though).

Of course.

Not currently, no.

I've dated pretty much only musicians.

I wish I were a better musician.

Unfortunately, I don't know of very many. I kind of like The Soviettes, although they grate on my nerves, after awhile. I listen to a lot of bands with a mix of male and female members, but no real "chick" bands, per se.

I like what I like.

I don't know; I hate arena shows and refuse to go to them. Also, most of the bands and artists I love are either dead, or not popular enough to play, say, Madison Square Garden. I saw The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stone Temple Pilots at SPAC in, let's see, '00? I think that was my last "big" show.

No.

37. Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
Yeah, loads.

38. What famous musicians would you like to fuck?
Heh, when I was about sixteen, this list would've been a mile long. Nowadays, I don't know - it's not about that for me, anymore. There are a quite a few to whom I would probably not say no, but it's not a goal, or even a fantasy, these days. I don't know why, exactly - maybe because music is basically a religion for me.

39. Worst concert moment?
Hmmm.... once, at a Face to Face/Lagwagon/thirty-other-bands show, some guy standing behind me shoved his [tiny] exposed, erect cock into my unsuspecting hand. I punched him in the face. The rest of that night was good.

40. Funny concert moment?
See above, I guess. Oh, also, when Rufus Wainwright had himself crucified, complete with glittering crown of thorns, while performing Gay Messiah, during his show at the Bardavon, a few years back. Two girls in front of me actually walked out. That was insanely hilarious.

41. Sad concert moment?
Nothing comes to mind, right now.

42. Best local act you can think of?
Eh, pass.

43. If you were a musical instrument what would you be?
A cello.

44. Do you listen to the radio?
No.

45. Do you watch music TV?
No.

46. Do you follow the music charts, like the top 40?
No.

47. Have you ever met any famous musicians?
The most famous musicians I've ever met were probably Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, from Green Day. Other than that, they've all been semi-famous, like Joe Escalante, from The Vandals, or the guys from okgo. Actually, I guess they're pretty famous, now, too. Most recently, I met Sergey Ryabtsev, who plays violin with Gogol Bordello, and he's the sweetest, most gracious man alive.

48. Are any of your friends/family/etc. musicians?
Most of my friends are musicians, or musical in one way or another. As for family, both my parents were musical. Dad played guitar, and often had friends over the house to jam with him. My mum sings, and plays acoustic and slide guitar - a fact that she kept hidden from me until very recently, as she doesn't consider herself to be any good, (which is bullshit, in my opinion).

I guess you could say the ego-thing, and the treatment of women by popular male musicians.... but that stuff's been going on for ages, so what can you do?

56. What do your parents listen to?
Mum has awesome taste in music. We listen to a lot of the same stuff, in fact, (how many other people can say that they were introduced to Elvis Costello orTom Waits by their mothers?). When I was small, she was this punkrock momma - she wore torn-up t-shirts with "angst" scribbled across them in black marker, and loved The Pogues, The Clash, The Police, etc. Dad, who fancied himself Jim Morrison, was more of a "classic" and "southern" rock guy - listened to The Doors, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, etc. He also wore a lot of cowboy-inspired gear. As I recall, the only artist my parents really shared in common was Bob Dylan
