However, there are occasions when I listen to words and think 'Wow', either because the lyrics mean something to me, are so true, or just purely inspired. These are a few of those moments. I've tried to avoid quoting whole songs, or stupid amounts from the same bands (Thinks Genesis, Leatherat or The Who...). It's also mostly for personal reference, so I'm not going to analyse them, and is subject to update at any time, but If you read this you're probably bored, so feel free to share some of yours...

Just returned (via a pub or two) from The Guildhall where I saw Perfect Alibi (A Pink Floyd tribute act).

Having seen Perfect Alibi before, I already know how good they were, so only really feel the need to comment on the fact the light/laser/projection show had been stepped up a level, and on the use of pyrotechnics/fireworks.

A more interesting read concerns the support band. Los Endos tribute one of my favourite acts of all time, Genesis. And the knowledge that Los Endos were playing in support to Perfect Alibi was what made me decide to pay the money to go to the gig.

To start with, I'll include the almost mandatory setlist...:

Firstly, I would like to point out that the version of The Cinema show that was covered was the Seconds Out version, with two drum parts under the instrumental. The second part of which was played by the seemingly very talented singer.

Secondly, I would like to point out that, although never really looking comfortable, I don't think the main drummer put a foot wrong. Or a hand, but that doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

However, the guitarist was, by the standards really required, shite. Stoccato. And he thought he was Daryl Steurmer, and Steurmer and Genesis wasn't a good combination when it was actually Steurmer.

The Bassist wasn't anything like as good as, or do justice to the pieces of, Mike Rutherford. And he played with a pick. I don't know for certain that Rutherford didn't play with a pick, but I suspect not; he sounds so much better.

Kudos go to the Pianist, for attempting things he quite plainly wasn't capable of in front of an audience which wasn't exactly small. Just don't, ever, destroy the Firth of Fifth into like that again. And learn to keep time properly. A good tip would be to learn to play off the drummer, rather than being somewhat erratic and forcing the rest of the band to play off you.

In case you hadn't realised it, Los Endos didn't exactly inspire me. However...

Talking about Los Endos in this way is somewhat harsh and unfair, given I'm essentially, in my head, comparing them to G2. And comparing G2 and Los Endos is like comparing Perfect Alibi to Think Floyd. Los Endos and Think Floyd are good, but not quite the same.

What Los Endos did achieve was reminding me how much I liked Genesis.

I've created a list of inspired studio albums released in 1973 designed to confirm my belief that that year was, as the title of the journal suggests, the best year for music. If only I had been born then! I believe that pretty much every album mentioned speaks for itself, but a couple of notes have been added anyway.

If anybody has any that they feel could be added to this list, then do let me know. More evidence is always better :). Or if anyone disagrees, and can argue their case, I'd love to find a large quantity of music better than this!

In truth, mind, I think that the first four albums listed should be enough, but in case their not for you, I hope to bowl you over by quantiy of quality rather than the cream of quality. If that makes sense. It does in my head :S.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you epic awesomeness...

01. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

This album is the definition of epic awesomeness. I could sing the praises of it for ages, but due to a desire not to bore you I will force myself to be restrained, and will merely inform you that it is the top rated progressive rock album on http://www.progarchives.com/, a must-use website for any progressive music fan :).

It is also worth noting, however, that Genesis released their first live album, Live, earlier in 1973. They also released the single from the album, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) with the EPIC B-Side Twilight Alehouse. Why that was never released on an album I shall never know.

I've been instructed by Dan to comment on the brilliance of this album, even though I would have said that that was self evident. So there you have it. It's brilliant.

05. Wings - Band on the Run

For a list of largely prog-based albums, Band on the Run may, at first sight, appear to be a strange choice to be included in this list. However, it is easy to see why this album is considered Paul McCartney's finest post-beatle work. I would also argue that Linda McCartney's additions to the songwriting and Dennie Laine's guitar work take Wings onto a mucial level that the The Beatles never reached, and that Wings never achieved the same level of success that they undoubtedly deserve.

10. Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Far from the best album in the list or that Yes have done, but included for three reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates that, although not a particularly special album, Yes did do an album in 1973. Secondly, it has The Ancient (Giants Under The Sun) on it. And finally, it gives me an excuse to mention their live album Yessongs, also released in 1973, and which is nothing short of breathtaking.

11. Jethro Tull - A Passion Play

13. Hatfield and the North - Hatfield and the North

I would like to confess I have not actually ever listened to this album, but it appears (not least of all because that it's a Canterbury Scene style album) that it would likely be worthy of this list. If anyone can confirm or believe otherwise then let me know. Hopefully I will actually listen to it one day :).

14. Perigeo - Abbiamo Tutti Un Blues Da Piangere
15. Status Quo - Hello!

OK, so maybe Quo may not exactly write the finest music in the world, but Quo are the finest no-nonsense rock and roll act who essentially defined a feelgood sound that no band since has successfully replicated (I stand to be corrected), and Caroline must be considered a signature tune. The album also features Roll Over Lay Down and Blue Eyed Lady.

Matt Monro. On Days Like These. Really shouldn't, 'cos it's not a happy song, but it reminds me of the Italian Job and fantastic driving.

Status Quo. I haven't. I has tickets, but they cancelled 'cos Rick Parfitt thought he may have had a throat tumour.

Deep Purple. Smoke on the Water. Though I really, really wish it wasn't.

Paul Weller. 22 Dreams. It's the only one I've actually listened to the whole way through :P.

Quiet World. Easy. Steve Hackett. He was the reason I bought the album. Not that he plays especially Hacketty on it. That said, everybody should listen to that band.

20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Robert Johnson? Would be a neat trick, he died in the 1930's. I wouldn't have wanted to, because I'd probably have killed myself before the show was over.

21. What is a good memory involving 27?
Dire Straits. I don't think there really is one. Actually, I think they were playing on the radio on the way back from my first year at brightlingsea, which if so would be a hellava good memory for reaosns that don't concern you. Probably.

Santana. Smooth, with Rob Thomas, I think. Or Europa. Or Just Feel Better with Steven Tyler.

Eric Crapton. No, Clapton. Eric Clapton. I will get that right one day. Never. Wouldn't spend the money likely to be needed on tickets. Though I wouldn't complain if he was to play a local pub.

The Nice. Not especially, but Kieth Emerson's keyboard playing in general makes me happy. Does that count?

Van der Graaf Generator. Trisector.

34. What is the worst song by 45?
Jimi Hendrix! I could have fun with this... If truth be told, I don't really know. What I do know is that he's the most voerrated guitarist of all time and whilst his music is good, it's not amazing and for that reason it all irritates me.

Focus. Hocus Pocus. Hocus Pocus by Focus. Fantastic piece of music. I must remember to go make that a loved track once I've finished with this shitty questionaire thingy.

Fitness To Practice. I only know one song, let alone a whole album!

37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Never.

38. What is your favorite song by 36?
Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Dunno. Only listened to my first ELP album about 2 hours ago. Will form an opinion later.

Electric Light Orchestra. Roll Over Beethoven (the intro). Got bored, tinking it was all an arrangement of that classical piece, and skipped to the next track, Confusion, which was the first I listened to the whole of.

Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here.

Queen. Prety much the whole A Night at the Opera album, 'cos it's a good laugh.

Fleetwood Mac. The only album I got is a shitty live recording. So dunno. But it's worth having that recording for Man Of The World on its own.

43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Bryan Adams. Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? Because it's got Paco de Lucia on guitar :P.

44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Jethro Tull. The fact I was recommended Yes because Yes are 'similar to' Tull, even though Yes are plainly so much better.

45. What is your favorite song by 35?
Tony Banks. To be honest, not his solo stuff. Something of his older work with Genesis. Like Firth of Fifth.


46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
The Who. No, there isn't. I hate them with a passion. And the only reason I'm saying that is bacause the only person who reads this will be Dan and he'll know I'm only saying it to piss him off. But, back to the question, yes. 5:15 is probably at the top of the list.

47. What is your favorite album by 4?
Yes. Fragile. Easy. One of only two albums with Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Jon Anderson. And Close to the Edge isn't as enjoyable a listen.

48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
Led Zeppelin. Jon Bonham. Page is over-rated. Not quite the same way Hendrix is, but overrated just the same. Jones is... dunno. Not Bonham. And Plant. Grrr. Maybe I shoulda just said 'Not Page'. But then, I do like Page... Ok. Sorted. Peter Grant. Haha.
