Constructed from the ground up by the peripatetic songwriting talents of Jon Wilks, aided and abetted by electron-botherer Jon Nice, Electric Grizzle is something of a departure from the barrel-chested folk rumblings of their previous recordings. Featuring vocals from Nanbanjin’s Dai Evans (Friday Night) and Emma Kuntze (Gotta Keep an Eye on My Lover, These Are the End Days), Electric Grizzle brings bristles to pop, both figuratively and literally.

Hands down, my most listened-to album of the year was Tan-Tan Therapy, by Tenniscoats. A stone cold classic, and no mistake. Interesting that Saya says her personal fave is We are everyone. It's a lovely collection, but Tan-Tan Therapy has that feeling of being a consolidated project. An essential to any decent record collection.

The trouble is, it was released in 2007. Here then, in case anyone cared, is my top 5 from 2008. Feel free to comment! I'd like to see what I missed out on...

An early Christmas present for we members of The Grizzly Folk!

Actually, it was a total surprise. I was performing with Nanbanjin the previous Tuesday, when Tenniscoats were also on the bill. ueno and I jammed the song backstage, but that was all. He called me onstage mid-tune in Fukuoka (actually, he came down into the audience and dragged me up - not that I was in any way reluctant). They're a lot of fun to perform with, and it's the first time I've ever seen Tetsuya Umeda smile (he was roped into performing the egg shaker!)

It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the black and white photos in the CD insert from this soundtrack to his 1970 cult film Shinjuku Mad, but naked girls covered in blood seem to be a recurring theme. As for the music on this 2008 reprint, it’s by the infamous Food Brain, a psych-free-jazz fusion improv supergroup featuring members of April Fool, Strawberry Path, Speed, Glue & Shinki and Golden Cups (no, I don’t know them either, that’s how freakin’ underground this shit is)."
