It's been over 4 years in the making, but today's as good a day as any to (re-)announce that my Sinéad O'Connor discography,
Thank You for Hearing Me, is live and well. It has everything she's ever released officially, including promotional items. Lyrics to almost every song are included, and many songs have additional notes and commentary. It's been a labor of love (and a huge money pit), but I hope you find something worthwhile there. Enjoy!

I've just started a very rudimentary version of a Sinead O'Connor discography that covers everything she's done from late 2006 to the present, since the two best-known discographies (Jeronimo's and The Healing Room's) kind of peter out around 2005. Mine is very much a work in progress (it's only about a week old), and it's going to change frequently for a while until I settle on a format that I like, and as I collect new info (and CDs!). It greatly expands on the Theology rarities and "Throw Down Your Arms" rare tracks journal entries that I wrote last year. Take a look at it and tell me what you think.

Sinead O'Connor Discography 2006-2009

It includes entries for:
I Don't Know How To Love Him
Theology
Something Beautiful: The Sinead O'Connor Theology Conversation interview promo
We People (Who Are Darker Than Blue)
The Water Horse
Big Blue Ball
Wells for Zoe: Water for Life

and many more!

We were told by the staff thatMarshall would start right at 7:30, since there was no opening act. We turned up at about 7:20 and had no problem finding seats. There was even some legroom this time!

Setlist:
First set:
1. Right On Time - new song
2. Flowers on the Wall - made famous by The Statler Brothers. Marshall sang it because he said he'd seen a sign for Staunton, Virginia the day before, and he remembered that Staunton is famous for being the home of The Statler Brothers. He noted that he'd played this song the previous night, and decided to do it again because he felt like it.
3. There She Goes Again
4. Just Passing Through - another new song?

Wed 24 Oct – Sinéad O'Connor, Damien Dempsey

This was my first time at Strathmore Music Center, which is a venue that's better known for its symphonic performances than ones by pop artists. It was a great space, however; even though the architecture was quite modern (think Scandinavian light-stained wood everywhere), the proportions & design made it feel like an old-time theater, complete with intimate boxes on the upper levels. We were in the fourth row.

Damo came on at about 8:20, and played the first three tracks solo. He introduced himself as being from Dublin, home to such famous people as James Joyce and, especially, Arthur Guinness. He noted that his family have been patrons of Guinness's products since the 1700s, and that Guinness was responsible for his conception. :) There were a couple catcalls of Damo from the back of the crowd when he walked on, but on the whole, the crowd hadn't heard of him. My wife, who'd only heard him a few times when I played his music in the car, was struck by his powerful voice and commanding stage presence.

EDIT: Here's a bootleg recording of Damo's set: [url=http://www.[spam nofollow=yes]/?d=48K3IT4W]http://www.[spam]/?d=48K3IT4W.

Damien Dempsey:
Negative Vibes
He said that this was called, I'm Never Going to Let Your Negative Vibes and Comments Get Through to My Psyche and Cripple Me.
Factories
Sing All Your Cares Away
This was introduced with the comment that when growing up, his family would have get-togethers where everyone, including those with no singing ability, were required to perform. He said that sometimes the people with the worst voices got the best responses because they sang with such passion.
Apple Of My Eye
He was amazed when he first visited New York City, because it proved that people from all over the world could live in peace together. He was joined by a woman (Carmen something or other) on electic violin, and a man (Kieran Kelly?) on pipes.
Ghosts Of Overdoses
I love this track, and I'm so glad that he played it tonight. He said that he couldn't imagine how horrible it would be for a parent to watch their child become addicted to heroin.
Maasai
The full band (John Reynolds on drums, Clare Kelly on bass, Kevin Armstrong on electric guitar, and the piper & fiddler who were already on stage) joined Damo for this. I'm surprised that it's the only track that he included from To Hell Or Barbados, which was released only a few months ago.
It's All Good
This seems to be his standard set closer. It's too bad that Sinéad didn't join him.

Sinéad was less chatty than at the 09/23 Chicago show (which I didn't attend, but heard via bootleg). She seemed bothered by the sound quality, quite often motioning to the sound man at stage left to turn up her vocals. She also fiddled with her left earpiece, which looked like it wasn't working.

Sinéad O'Connor:
The Emperor's New Clothes
I Am Stretched On Your Grave
She dedicated this, as usual, to all the dead people in the audience, but said that hopefully nobody in the crowd would be by the end of the performance. Unfortunately, most of her comment got drowned out by applause for the previous song.
You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart
The Lamb's Book of Life
This was introduced with the story of how she spent 4 months in Atlanta in the late 90s, and became enamored of the televangelists, especially one whose name I can't remember; she was amazed because this guy preached that it was okay to ask for money. She said that this song was about how she tried to bring some American preachers over to Ireland to teach Irish priests a thing or two.
Never Get Old
Something Beautiful
She said that this one was about stealing a bible.
If You Had A Vineyard
She said that all of the songs on Theology quoted Scripture to a certain extent, and that while Something Beautiful had just a couple lines from the Bible, this one was taken entirely from the Bible. She also told how she'd had many interview with Christian publications to promote this album release, and that 90% of them understood what she was trying to do. The rest got agitated when she suggested that God might be anti-war. This amazed her, having been brought up a Christian. She dedicated this to the Big Man himself.
Three Babies
What Doesn't Belong to Me
This sounds so much better acoustic than it does on faith and courage.
Nothing Compares 2 U
Thank You For Hearing Me
I love this song.
In This Heart
This is another one that's mesmerizing live, even though it always seemed like background music when I listened to it on Universal Mother.
The Last Day of Our Acquaintance
It was very uncomfortable to watch John Reynolds while she sang this.

Encore:
Black Boys On Mopeds
She said that American critics loved it when she played her older material, except for this song. She said that one line, in particular, doesn't go over well with American audiences, considering the state of affairs here today.
Whomsoever Dwells
AFAICT, this is the only track that differs from the Chicago set, where she played Rivers Of Babylon instead.
Back Where You Belong
Sinead told how she was asked to write a track for The Water Horse movie, which is being released on Christmas Day. She said that movie's subtext is an anti-war message, which I didn't know, but which now sounds obvious when listening to the song.

WTF? I just found this press release in a Google search for Sinead.

http://today.reuters.com/news/articleinvesting.aspx?view=PR&symbol=NWSa&storyID=216735+05-Sep-2007+BW&type=qcna

LOS ANGELES--(Business Wire)--An original, Fox Soccer Channel-produced promotional music video featuring Sinead O'Connor's song Something Beautiful debuted today on America's soccer network, giving viewers an emotional, artistic view of the world's most popular sport.

Something Beautiful is one of 20 songs on O'Connor's new double-CD studio album Theology, released June 26 on KOCH Records. Fox Soccer Channel's on-air promotions team caught up with the acclaimed singer-songwriter at a rehearsal session in late June to film segments for the 60-second Something Beautiful video, which is interspersed with slow-motion imagery from some of the channel's most popular properties.

Showcasing glorious goals from the stars of England's Barclays Premier League, Italy's Serie A, Major League Soccer and the Argentine First Division - as well as passionate celebrations by teams and spectators alike - Something Beautiful portrays music and soccer as equally enchanting art forms.

Fox Soccer Channel has also recently debuted music-themed promotional spots involving both established and emerging artists. Earlier this summer, FSC partnered with multicultural rock band Ozomatli and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for an Off the Pitch feature segment currently running on the channel. Other musical collaborators include Los Angeles-based rock groups The Rising Sound and No More Kings. Get in the Game, an original song by The Rising Sound, serves as theme music for MLS Saturday on FSC, while Sweep the Leg by No More Kings serves as the backdrop for a montage promoting Fox Soccer Channel's exclusive telecasts of the original program David Beckham's Soccer USA. Other artists who have appeared on Fox Soccer Channel include Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Ziggy Marley and Damian Marley.

About Fox Soccer Channel

Fox Soccer Channel offers the most comprehensive coverage of world-class soccer available in the United States, including Major League Soccer, England's Barclays Premier League, Italy's Serie A and the Argentine First Division as well as global tournaments such as the UEFA Cup, UEFA Women's Championship, English FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions' Cup and FA Community Shield. The Official Broadcast Partner of the United States Youth Soccer Association, Fox Soccer Channel also televises United Soccer Leagues and NCAA Division I college soccer matches. The channel reaches more than 30 million cable and satellite households in the U.S. and Caribbean.

Fox Soccer Channel is one of 28 national and regional programming networks within Fox Networks Group, an operating unit of the News Corporation (NYSE:NWS).

Unexpectedly, most of Ringo Starr's solo catalog showed up on iTunes (US) today, even bumping John & Paul's banners on the main page. There are some missing albums, especially from the late 70s & early 80s (Ringo's Rotogravure, Ringo the 4th, and Stop and Smell the Roses, and several more more), but the good ones are there: Ringo, Goodnight Vienna, Beaucoups Of Blues, and Sentimental Journey.

(Note: this is a slightly-modified copy of a posting that I made on the Morrissey-solo forums, but I thought that it may be better suited to the last.fm audience)

I'm really frustrated by how hard it is to get timely news about Sinead O'Connor. Her web sites (http://www.sineadoconnor.com & http://www.myspace.com/sineadoconnormusic) are next to useless. She just had a friggin' new album released a few weeks ago, and yet I haven't seen much other than some interviews that her record label put out. Here are some examples of missed opportunities for communication:

* There are at least 3 versions of her Theology CD available in the US alone: the regular edition, the Borders exclusive edition which tacks two interviews to the end of disc 2, and the Best Buy exclusive edition which includes 5(!) bonus live songs, 3 of which are unavailable anywhere else. There are gaps in the CDs' catalog numbers, which suggests that there could be other editions out there. But is there any mention of this anywhere? No! I had to add this info to Last.fm and Wikipedia myself in the hopes that someone else will find something and pitch in.
* There's a sixth live track (Watcher Of Men) that's available for free from Uncut magazine's Web site, but again, there's nothing on her pages about it.
* I happened to catch one of her performances on some late-night talk show a couple weeks ago, but there was no word about it on her sites.
* Her North American concert dates were announced a month ago, but up until last week, at least one of the venues' own sites didn't even have a listing for the performance. I checked today, and now I find that the tix go on sale tomorrow at 10. I could have missed it, and I've been checking every couple of days!

Am I just stupid? Is there a better venue out there for this info? I've looked at a couple of her fan forums, but they don't seem terribly active.

IMHO, Suzanne Vega's Web site is the perfect example of how to communicate with fans. Her Undertow fan forum is very active, and Suzanne herself chimes in frequently. The site's news section is updated very frequently, and you can quickly figure out what editions of her latest are available and where.

Come to think of it, http://www.true-to-you.com (Morrissey's official site) could stand to learn a thing or eleventy from http://wwww.SuzanneVega.com, too.

(The original posting can be found at http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=76810.)
