Mine is very much a work in progress (it's only about a week old), and it's going to change frequently for a while until I settle on a format that I like, and as I collect new info (and CDs!). This is the second time we've seen Marshall at Jammin' Java, and it was much nicer this time, mostly because it wasn't as jam-packed. We were told by the staff thatMarshall would start right at 7:30, since there was no opening act. We turned up at about 7:20 and had no problem finding seats. There was even some legroom this time!

Marshall sang it because he said he'd seen a sign for Staunton, Virginia the day before, and he remembered that Staunton is famous for being the home of The Statler Brothers. 4. Just Passing Through - another new song? I couldn't find lyrics anywhere, and I'm just guessing that this is the title because I found it mentioned in a March 1st concert review.

This was my first time at Strathmore Music Center, which is a venue that's better known for its symphonic performances than ones by pop artists. It was a great space, however; even though the architecture was quite modern (think Scandinavian light-stained wood everywhere), the proportions & design made it feel like an old-time theater, complete with intimate boxes on the upper levels. We were in the fourth row.

Damo came on at about 8:20, and played the first three tracks solo. He introduced himself as being from Dublin, home to such famous people as James Joyce and, especially, Arthur Guinness. He noted that his family have been patrons of Guinness's products since the 1700s, and that Guinness was responsible for his conception. :) There were a couple catcalls of Damo from the back of the crowd when he walked on, but on the whole, the crowd hadn't heard of him. My wife, who'd only heard him a few times when I played his music in the car, was struck by his powerful voice and commanding stage presence.

This was introduced with the comment that when growing up, his family would have get-togethers where everyone, including those with no singing ability, were required to perform. He said that sometimes the people with the worst voices got the best responses because they sang with such passion.
Apple Of My Eye
He was amazed when he first visited New York City, because it proved that people from all over the world could live in peace together. He was joined by a woman (Carmen something or other) on electic violin, and a man (Kieran Kelly?) on pipes.
Ghosts Of Overdoses
I love this track, and I'm so glad that he played it tonight. He said that he couldn't imagine how horrible it would be for a parent to watch their child become addicted to heroin.
Maasai
The full band (John Reynolds on drums, Clare Kelly on bass, Kevin Armstrong on electric guitar, and the piper & fiddler who were already on stage) joined Damo for this. I'm surprised that it's the only track that he included from To Hell Or Barbados, which was released only a few months ago.
It's All Good
This seems to be his standard set closer. It's too bad that Sinéad didn't join him.

Sinéad was less chatty than at the 09/23 Chicago show (which I didn't attend, but heard via bootleg). She seemed bothered by the sound quality, quite often motioning to the sound man at stage left to turn up her vocals. She also fiddled with her left earpiece, which looked like it wasn't working.

She dedicated this, as usual, to all the dead people in the audience, but said that hopefully nobody in the crowd would be by the end of the performance. Unfortunately, most of her comment got drowned out by applause for the previous song.

This was introduced with the story of how she spent 4 months in Atlanta in the late 90s, and became enamored of the televangelists, especially one whose name I can't remember; she was amazed because this guy preached that it was okay to ask for money. She said that this song was about how she tried to bring some American preachers over to Ireland to teach Irish priests a thing or two.

She said that this one was about stealing a bible.
If You Had A Vineyard
She said that all of the songs on Theology quoted Scripture to a certain extent, and that while Something Beautiful had just a couple lines from the Bible, this one was taken entirely from the Bible. She also told how she'd had many interview with Christian publications to promote this album release, and that 90% of them understood what she was trying to do. The rest got agitated when she suggested that God might be anti-war. This amazed her, having been brought up a Christian. She dedicated this to the Big Man himself.

Back Where You Belong
Sinead told how she was asked to write a track for The Water Horse movie, which is being released on Christmas Day. I'm really frustrated by how hard it is to get timely news about Sinead O'Connor. Her web sites (http://www.sineadoconnor.com & http://www.myspace.com/sineadoconnormusic) are next to useless. She just had a friggin' new album released a few weeks ago, and yet I haven't seen much other than some interviews that her record label put out. Here are some examples of missed opportunities for communication:

* There are at least 3 versions of her Theology CD available in the US alone: the regular edition, the Borders exclusive edition which tacks two interviews to the end of disc 2, and the Best Buy exclusive edition which includes 5(!) bonus live songs, 3 of which are unavailable anywhere else. There are gaps in the CDs' catalog numbers, which suggests that there could be other editions out there. But is there any mention of this anywhere? No! I had to add this info to Last.fm and Wikipedia myself in the hopes that someone else will find something and pitch in.
* There's a sixth live track (Watcher Of Men) that's available for free from Uncut magazine's Web site, but again, there's nothing on her pages about it.
* I happened to catch one of her performances on some late-night talk show a couple weeks ago, but there was no word about it on her sites.
* Her North American concert dates were announced a month ago, but up until last week, at least one of the venues' own sites didn't even have a listing for the performance. I checked today, and now I find that the tix go on sale tomorrow at 10. I could have missed it, and I've been checking every couple of days!

Am I just stupid? Is there a better venue out there for this info? I've looked at a couple of her fan forums, but they don't seem terribly active.

IMHO, Suzanne Vega's Web site is the perfect example of how to communicate with fans. Her Undertow fan forum is very active, and Suzanne herself chimes in frequently. The site's news section is updated very frequently, and you can quickly figure out what editions of her latest are available and where.

Come to think of it, http://www.true-to-you.com (Morrissey's official site) could stand to learn a thing or eleventy from http://wwww.SuzanneVega.com, too.
