Craig Finn’s singsong style isn’t for everyone, but definitely grows on you. In their latest release, the veil of ‘I’m not really singing’ is certainly not as noticeable and it’s probably because he actually gives singing a shot. He certainly waxes poetic

For some reason this album is really clicking for me more than previous efforts. The riffing is tighter, the back up vocals give the songs a more melodious flair. They’re known as the ultimate bar band which I feel is quite a dubious distinction. With their classic rock sound, even busting out an occasional twin guitar solo ala Thin Lizzy.

I generally don’t scour over the lyrics, but curiosity prevails. And I certainly am not disappointed. This album is definitely worth picking up.
Boys And Girls In America

4

Man this single kicks ass! MCR is a guilty pleasure that may have me identified with the Hot Topic crowd. I guess they're calling it mall-emo, which makes sense. And yes, sometimes I cut myself...

The intro is so over the top replete with a searing Brian May-esque lead guitar. Horns, nulti-layered vocals, all I can say is that I'm eagerly awaiting the new album.

*** */2

What a mediocre album. Not much to say about the music, all pretty standard alt rock stuff. It's fun to imagine who listens to this. I see guys in their 40's with heavily pleated Dockers, and button down shirts that dont quite match. I also can picture their slightly aging trophy stay ay home wives picking this up and really enjoying it.

* */2

It seems like everybody is trying to get hyphie these days. And if you're from the yay area or nor cal that's your ticket to TRL. Mr. Davis hooks up with Keak da Sneak and the first half of the album seems like a poor mans Lil Jon. Seriously, wtf is Shadow going to do next, supply his songs with endless barages of 'Yeahs' and 'Okay'?

The second half of the album feels more in line with what we've all come to love and expect, yet it's still missing something. I can't help but feel the album is just kinda thrown together. It's not as layered as previous efforts.

Jesus Christ this guy is talented. He’s getting some serious attention, whether it’s Paste magazine listing him as the 47th greatest living songwriter (right after David Byrne and way ahead of indie god Stephen Malkmus) Performing at the Lincoln Center, or being name-dropped in a Snow Patrol single. Sufjan is simply amazing.

Avalanche is to Amnesiac as Illinoise was to Kid A. And even though they’re leftovers from that great state, they’re still better than just aboot anything else coming out now. It’s worth purchasing just to see how reinterprets Chicago three different ways. For a while Chicago AC was on constant repeat (I’m a sucker for a rolling snare pattern, probably the inner band geek in me) but Chicago OCD has a great droning guitar lick with random hand claps that really allow the song to build and subside. These are leftovers? I can hardly believe it myself. At first I thought it may have been over-indulgent, but after listening to it for the last few weeks I want more. I want to hear John Wayne Gacy redone with a harp loop and some heavy metal riffage mixed way. way down.

I can’t give it a 4 star rating because of the fact that it is outtakes, and the album doesn’t flow overall as well as either of his last two albums. With that said, it’s still a remarkable album that is good enough to stand alone.

***.75
