I recently hit the 50,000 track mark. It's taken me two and a half years, and others probably did not take so long, but that's what separates the true listeners from the others who leave their iTunes going all night.

My 50,000th track was Rock Bang's Wo Xiang ni de kuai le shi ying wei wo from the Formula 17 soundtrack. It's a wonderful song, very cheerful and I love to listen to it in the morning.

I guess the next big number will be 75,000 tracks. I guess since it took me 2.5 years to get 50,000, it will take me another 1.75 to get to there. I think that's right; I'm an Asian Studies major, not math.

I've been watching my charts a lot and wondering when the next Asian artist would find a spot in my top ten list. I hadn't listened to very much Asian music until about 3/4 of a year of Last.fm so there is a lot of competition. For a while I thought it would be Luna Sea just because of seniority. But I just saw today DBSK is not just in the Top Ten - but the Top Five. Congratulations, DBSK. You have taken over my life. You have turned me into a thirteen year old girl. You have made all of my friends think I am crazy. You make me go into fits when you touch one another. You gave me this vast amount of useless knowledge, like where you went to school, what Jaemin and Junho mean, and which PVs have more than one version. Thanks a lot.
In just a matter of weeks DBSK turned into my life. My lifelong passion for Japan - seriously, my earliest memories are of my love of Japan - has been steadily transitioning to Korean culture, history and international relations. What happened to me? I used to listen to compositional genuises like Gackt and The Back Horn and Bump of Chicken now it's DBSK all the time.
But I'm happy with it in the end. DBSK fills in all of my free time so I'm never bored. They make me happy to listen to and watch and fangirl about.

And so, DBSK, in honor of your big jump to my top five...

Top Twenty DBSK Tracks

1. Insa
Beautiful beyond all reason. My iTunes play count for this is well over two hundred which and double that of the next most played. When I first heard this song I was speechless. It's such a soothing, healing song. I find so many times when I don't want to listen to anything but this song on repeat. I've believed Jaejoong to have the best voice of DBSK from the start and this song reinforces that belief.

2. Tonight
My second most played DBSK track. A lot of DBSK's songs contain some small part that I fall in love with and absolutely gush when I hear it and this song is just a collection of that. This song is so perfect for their voices and arrangement. My absolutely favorite part is the long notes held out by Changmin and Jaejoong around 3 minutes in. The PV is beautiful too. I just love Junsu and Jaejoong's smiles as they sing in it. They look so pretty and Jaejoong's high notes sound so pure.

3. Miduyo (I Believe)
This was their first ballad I really liked and also the first time I realized I was falling for their romanticism, particularly in the English lines delivered by the deep, smooth voice of Yoochun. "I will give all my love to you. Trust me." What girl can keep from swooning at this?

4. Beautiful Thing
I don't know where this song came from. I had it; I knew it was from Vacation; I even had a play or two of it but one day I was doing school work with DBSK on shuffle and this comes on and I look up, "what is this? This is beautiful!" Somehow I had missed the sweet piano and - a harmonica! I'm a sucker for the harmonica. I love how different Junsu's voice is and it's just perfect for this song. I expect this song will someday be closer to Insa's play count because often these days I like to put the two songs on repeat with one another.

5. Rising Sun
This song is perfect for people like me to listen to in order to get hooked by DBSK. It's amazing and will always be one of their best. Changmin's part is so good; I just love it. Any songs with standout Changmin parts I just love.

6. Tri-Angle
This is technically the first DBSK song I ever heard. I downloaded it randomly a long time ago because I liked BoA. I loved this song alot and it was when I first heard the name DBSK. It wasn't until months later that I decided I'd give this "DBSK" band a shot. This is still a great song that I like though I cringe when I see Junsu, Jaejoong and Yunho's hair in the PV.

7. 'O' - Jung.Ban.Hap
For some reason I put all these songs together - the ones I listened to first - O, Rising Sun and TriAngle. This one is a lot like Rising Sun and almost as perfect. I heard Rising Sun and this one at the same time and at the time I prefered this one. Something about the long "ooh"s made me want to turn my music as loud as it would go and I couldn't stop wanting to hear this. I'd go to bed and be like, "no, I have to hear it one more time" and I'd turn my iPod and do so.

8. Choosey Lover
I like this song for many reasons. One, because it's amazing and too catchy for it's own good. Two, it was the first single that came out when I was a fan so I felt like I was with the times and the shared excitement of the DBSK community of the time was radiant. Three, the PV: no other words necessary.

9. Balloons
What to say about Balloons? It's adorable, cracked and fun. What's not to like?

10. Fighting Spirit of Dong Bang
The ending of this song is my favorite part. I love the way the song builds to dramatically at the end and the association with the World Cup and the pride in the team.

11. Whatever They Say (Acapella Version)
Definetly one of my alltime favorite songs. This represents DBSK's talent so well, especially giving Changmin a chance to showoff his deeper ranges. Judging from my dorm who goes crazy when the men's acapella group performs in our hall, I'd say it's hard for anyone to not appreciate a well constructed acapella song.

12. 글로리아 높으신 이의 탄생
There isn't too much to say about this one. I try not to listen to Holiday music out of season but the harmony in this song is too hard to resist. I listen to this one a lot!

13. Get Me Some
If I had heard the main "I wanna get me some of that...I need to get me some of that" part on the radio in America I would have immediately changed the station but I can't help but like this song a lot. What have you done to me DBSK? I have no excuses for this one.

14. Dead End
One of my favorites from the new album! This is a really different sound for DBSK and I just love it! It reminds me of the more rockish tunes that pop is capable of, like Kat-tun's Rhodesia.

15. Hi Ya Ya
I'm am an absolutely sucker for any male singer with a song that showcases his range, especially when singing higher parts. This song feeds this need so well. It's a nice song. It makes me feel happy and peaceful. The PV makes me want to go to the beach and I hate the beach.

16. Dangerous Mind
When I first got into DBSK I was still tentative to listen to the songs that were so obviously Boy Band songs, so I began with their faster, louder songs including this one which has a lot of different, interesting elements in it, and I especially love the weird fast-paced vocals of Yoochun.

17. Hey! Girl
This is another one of those songs that I didn't think much of at first but then realized I can't live without listening to it everyday. Like Hi Ya Ya, this song is just lovely. It's soothing and calm and enjoyable to listen to. And of course, this is one of those songs that has the best Changmin parts.

18. I'll Be There
Once I had a song stuck in my head and I knew it was a sweet, boy band song and I recalled the lines "Thanks for everyday" and I thought it was Arashi's thank you for my days but then realized it was I'll Be There. A weird story is all the commentary I am giving for this song.

19. One
A lovely ballad! This came on random one day while I was walking back from class and I was so excited, "what is this song??" thought I. I love songs with soft/loud contrasts. It's really well done and has a very wonderful ending where it all climaxes together.

20. miss you
This is one of my newest favorites. I gave it a listen when the PV first came out but didn't think much of it until Five in the Black came out and listened to it again. I can't believe I could bypass such electronic catchiness!

I did it! I finally listened to my entire iTunes library! Last semester I resolved to and so I began randomly in the D's (alphabetized by song title) but I never made it past the S's. So at the beginning of the new year I decided to give it another shot and try to finish by Spring Break (March 2), this time listening alphabetically by artist. 2500 songs later, after deleting several songs and finding new favorites, I finally finished a week earlier than planned. I feel so accomplished.
While I was doing this I made notes about particular bands when I thought about it. These are said notes:

aiko has a lovely voice and makes really cute, sweet music but when I hear her in shuffles I always skip her songs. I only really like listening to her all at once.
Of the 11
AliCE NinE songs that I have, not a single one has been rated. Why do I have so many of their songs?
I think I would like An Cafe more if they had a different vocalist. I love their music and melodies but they would be much better with a better vocalist.
I never get tired of hearing The Back Horn. Their music makes me feel so nostalgic because it was one of the first Japanese bands I heard and I remember the first few days of listening to Japanese music.
Listening to 21 the brilliant green songs at once is excessive. I like them, but not to that extent.
Buck Tick is amazing.
Chara is amazing.
Need more music by The Decemberists.
116 ayumi hamasaki songs is excessive.
KAT-TUN's music is suprisingly good.
All of Koda Kumi's songs sound the same except Selfish which is excellent. I'd enjoy her ballads like "Believe" more if she had a nicer voice.
Közi is very interesting; I wish I had more than just a couple of songs by him.
I got stuck in LUNA SEA because I discovered so many new favorites I had to listen to them over and over. How is it I never noticed their beautiful ballads like Crazy About You and Love Song?
How could I not have listened to these La'cryma Christi songs??
I deleted all of my Moi dix Mois songs. I hate Mana. I'm not big on that whole scene of music. I listened to two songs and decided it was enough.
I've said it before, but sometimes I feel like the pillows is the only band I truly like. I don't know why I feel that way because it's not true but they are so perfect and I can listen to them absolutely whenever and I feel so strongly for them that I just can't help but feel that way.
I'm not going to lie: I skipped all of Psycho le Cemu. I plan to go back and delete most of their songs from my computer.
Ringo Shiina can do no wrong. How is that every one of her songs are so inivative and brilliant?
In the midst of all of my Asian music, Ryan Adams remains my favorite American artist by far. I adore his slower, sweet songs like Harder now that it's Over and Oh My Sweet Carolina.
In some songs, it's hard to believe V6 is a Johnny's band.
Everytime I hear a YUI song I love it a little more. After listening to her for so long, my love for her is unimaginable. I can't express how much I love her in words.
70 DBSK songs are hardly enough. I need to listen to them more!

That is all.

It may be five days too early for this but because I have a paper and a test this week I doubt I will have time to post this any other time.
The seveteenth of February is a very important date for me because it is the day I first joined Last.fm which was two years ago! Yes, I remember the days when it was really just Audioscrobbler and eveything was a shade of light blue. In those days I often had trouble having my tracks go through and I was mainly listening to indie rock. I have not just seen changes in the website but I sat back and watched The Shins promoted through Garden State, Interpol become the next big thing thanks to the OC and even Applied Communications has more than just twelve listeners now.
Last year at this time I went through and tallied my weekly number one artist, the top of which were
Sailor Moon (8)
Bright Eyes (5)
Belle & Sebastian (5)
Gackt (4)
Elliott Smith (2)
Pearl Jam (2)
Blink182 (1)
The Smashing Pumpkins (1)
Modest Mouse (1)
Air (1)
Brand New (1)
Disney (1)
The Smiths (1)
The Shins (1)
This list shows my first steps towards my eventual complete conversion to Asian music. I discovered Japanese music about half way through that year. My conversion is really evident in this year's number one's:
Gackt (20)
ayumi hamasaki (9)
Miyavi (3)
Dir en grey (2)
Fruits Bakset (2)
DBSK (2)
MALICE MIZER (1)
The Back Horn (1)
Arai Akino (1)
Art School (1)
Plastic Tree (1)
MUCC (1)
L'Arc~en~Ciel (1)
La'cryma Christi (1)
Jay Chou (1)
Looking at this, I have many thoughts. The main thing is the prevalence of Gackt in my life and the way I listen to my favorite artists over and over, much more so than last year when I had many more artists. I have no idea how Art School got the top spot one week.
DBSK is an interesting band to note because they have only had about two months to get into my charts and I expect them to be in the number one spot many more times in the upcoming year.

Last year the artist with the most plays in one week was Neutral Milk Hotel with 260. This time it was DBSK with 196 in one week, the week I discovered them in all their stupid boy band glory. These days I understand my music taste is getting bad. I never would have imagined I'd listen to Korean boy bands or Chinese rap but I couldn't be happier than I am with my music now. What a relief it is to not worry about upholding a certian standard, not liking that band because it went to a major label or not admitting to liking that one song because it was on a soundtrack, making it the general public's favorite and therefore not mine.

I've definetly grown alot when it comes to my music and, as I think music greatly reflects the total of a person, I feel like I have grown alot in all aspects of my life. It's amazing to me that I have been so absorbed by a website for this long and so I have no trouble thinking I will be making a similiar post like this in another year, and if not, that is okay; it will just be one more step in the everchanging life of my music interests.

I'm doing everything to avoid studying tonight so I decided after posting at LiveJournal I'd post here, particuarly after I saw the insane, totally out of the ordinary, worth writing about thing on my Last.fm charts. Gackt is not in my top 10 for the week. I don't believe it. He hasn't not been in my top ten for ages. I'm a little frightened.

Also, a little while ago I passed the 30,000 mark of tracks played which was relatively monumentous. That song was Gackt's Lust for Blood.

Speaking of Gackt, I'm doing this thing where if I don't do a certain thing I won't allow myself to listen to Gackt. So far I haven't done this thing so I've been able to listen to him so that doesn't account for my charts.

I am in a very bizarre mood today. My typing has been rapidly declining lately; I don't know what my problem is. I used to be a state typing champion!!

As is evident from my charts, I've been listening to Chopin lately because I am taking a music class here at ano basho and I really like piano nocturnes particularly his. The said class that I am avoiding studying for right now is actually my music class. I have to memorize dates and that is daunting and so I am scared to begin. My test is Wednesday though so I have a little while longer.

I recently discovered a song by Anri Kumaki and need to hear more because the beauty of her voice rivals that of Maaya Sakamoto but I don't want to make a rash decision since Sakamoto has held that spot for a long time now.

I think that's about all. I just felt like posting randomly. I pity the people who clicked on this entry because they are connected to Chopin since this is pretty much not about classical music at all. I know what an etude is and what schnell means and the three phases of beethoven's musical career and that Liszt was hot in the painting in my book so I can see why he was a lady's man. There; that is more classical music content for the masses.

I really hate it here.

Of Diru, the Alphabet and Random Chinese music

This is probably the least amount of time that has occured between my journal entries but I had a major happenstance in the music world and then some other lesser things that I can post about as well. Though I wrote the title of this post that way, I think I will write in a backwards fashion.

Random Chinese Music
Jay Chou - Who is this and why can't I stop listening to him? He sounds like nothing else I would ever stand to listen to and yet I can't get enough. I told my fellow Japanese music fan friend about him and had her listen to some songs and I think she seriously thought I was joking about liking him. He is wonderful.

The Alphabet
I am listening to all of my music. I have 1882 songs on my computer and I only listen to about a third of them. I haven't heard half of them so I am going through them all. Occassionally I'll take a deterence and listen to something else but I save my place. So I don't get bored, which I tend to do, I have been listening to them alphabetical by title which makes it more interesting. And I also started in the middle; or the beginning middle. I started with Miyavi's Dear From....XXX and nine songs later I made it out of songs beginning with Dear and I am not fairly far into the D's - I'm currently listening to Don't You Believe? from the Gravitation soundtrack.

Diru
I saw Dir en grey live yesterday. It was amazing. Now I feel bad about typing this post when I'm so exhausted because I don't think I'll be able to do it justice. I was a little nervous to see Diru because I've always had the suspicion that Kyo was criminally insane. I didn't know that they had become so Westernized, ie. dropped the Visual Kei or perhaps that's just because they were touring in America. But they got on and Kyo tears his shirt off after the first song and everyone swoons. He is the most powerful performer I have ever seen. He was screaming as if in mortal anguish and writhing on the floor in spasms. I've been smiling randomly all day thinking about it; It's a little embarassing. My other favorite member, Toshiya was also a thing of beauty. I love to see them get so into their music. I feel like they definetly took over the stage that day. They were playing on the Family Values tour so they were with other bands. Anyway, later my friend and I were able to "meet" the "band" because we bought a CD and got a wristband. Really they just lined us up and we went through the tent where Shinya and Kaoru were and we shook their hands, their beautiful, beautiful, tiny Japanese hands. I can't help but feel like this was the single greatest moment of my life. I thought it was stupid because it's so trivial but it really was amazing.

Now I'll stop before I get too much fangirling in.

Random Music Oriented Thoughts Pt. II

I have been listening to ayumi hamasaki overkill these days. It started a little over a week ago. I just started listening to her songs over and over. I have a list of my top 34 songs by her and I put that on shuffle and repeat and let it go on my computer or on my iPod while I'm going to sleep. I also watch her PVs over and over. Hanabi Episode 2 is my favorite PV by her, but M and About You I have been watching frequently as well. I just saw Endless Sorrow and was really amazed by it. I thought it was a good one.

I recently acquired Gackt's 君が追いかけた夢 PV. That's a very good one. It might be my new favorite by Gackt. I'm willing to upload it for anyone who hasn't seen Gackt in all his greatness. I also adore the girl in this PV. She is adorable beyond reason.

"First Love" by Utada Hikaru is another song that I can't stop listening to. I downloaded a video that had clips from Majo no Jouken, the Japanese drama that used it as a theme song and it suddenly gave it new meaning to me. I found the episodes on YouTube and watched them all one after the other, barely doing anything else. Now I'm infatuated with Japanese drama and am watching Strawberry on the Shortcake. This is my first introduction to YouTube and I'm amazed that it has so much stuff on it.

My charts are a little messed up now a days. Since I went to college, my sister is at home using my old desktop, listening to music on it that goes onto my Last.fm charts for some reason. I don't really know what the problem is; I told her how to fix it and she said she had. Any english music from here on out is not mine because I deleted anything that wasn't from East Asian in order to save room on my labtop which was getting overloaded.

I'm taking a class on Music Enjoyment, which goes into all the makings of music like meter and timbre and all that. It's very unnerving for me. I like music so much but I don't understand it at all so it makes me feel like a fraud, or that I shouldn't like it as much as I do because I'm unworthy. I can't tell if a piece of music is disjunct or in duple meter or whether or not syncopation is used. This is probably why I was never good at playing the flute in middle and high school. I just moved my fingers where they were needed.

Has everyone heard the soundtrack for Moon Child? It's WONDERFUL. When I think of Moon Child I think of the funny parts and how dorky Gackt is but the music is so sad and beautiful I sometimes feel like it doesn't fit the movie but then I realize the movie is sad with the themes of unending friendship and the fact that people die. Anyway, the music is absolutely beautiful. Mayonaka no Drive is my favorite track.

I guess that's about all. I just get these thoughts now and then and when they compile enough, I make a journal entry about it.

I've been retagging all of my music. My format for all my Japanese songs is as follows: Kana (Romanji)
Now, Winamp doesn't like any Asian characters at all so when they are submitted to Last.fm they show up as question marks. I hate iTunes and so don't listen to it very often, normally just when I'm on MSN messenger to show off my music. So I am too lazy to switch music players just for the sake of my song submitions on Last.fm. They artist numbers is all that really matters anyway.

I'm so stuck on Gackt and MUCC currently. I can't get enough of either. I particularly love MUCC's Ame no Orchestra single.

I downloaded some French music for my sister and I decided to listen to it for myself. It's great! For some reason it strikes me as very funny but I don't know why.

Moon Child was a beautiful movie! Naturally it was a little cheesy but I liked it just the same. I never was a big fan of HYDE, I just can't get into his music, but I loved his character in the movie. I wonder what his true-life personality is closer to - the quiet, tragic beauty Kei or the coarse voice and songwriter Hyde.

I can't get over the similarities between the voices of Hyde and the singer of D. I wonder if I am just crazy or if other people think so too.

Dir en grey is not playing at Virginia Beach this August! How terribly sad! I was so excited to see them. Too bad. However, they will play in Washington DC in the middle of September and I'll be closer to DC in the fall anyway at UMW so that works out for me. I'll just go to that show.

I heard the pillows were in West Virignia a couple days ago. That would have been a great show, I'm sure. They are one of the few bands that I could put all their songs on repeat and just listen to that all day long without getting tired of it. They were also so great for FLCL.

I ordered a few CDs with the last of my graduation money. I am expecting Gackt's Mars and Crescent and Miyavi's Galyuu. I'm glad to be buying music rather than just downloading. I do feel bad for it and try to buy albums when I get the chance, but this is the first time I've really had the money to buy anything.

This ends my random thoughts on music.

Ayumi Hamasaki

My collection of ayumi hamasaki songs just jumped to 101. My very amazing friend loaned me all of her Japanese music which consisted largely of her favorite artist, Ayu. I know this is terrible of me, to just rip her music but I am a poor person.

The down side to this is the music has no tracklistings so I've had to try and figure out all the titles for myself by looking up the lyrics and using my very poor romajinizing skills to do this.

And so, I am writing this post for two reasons. One, in case there is a sudden jump in Ayumi Hamasaki on my charts because though she isn't my favorite, I now own more tracks by her than any other artist so that will equal major playing time.

Second, if anybody wants to help me identify songs that would be wonderful. I am on AIM: myheartisfull14, MSN: myheartisfull14@yahoo.com (I know it is a yahoo address, but I converted it so I can get on MSN with it) and I have an account on yousendit though I've never used it and am not sure if I know how. So there we go. :)

Top Five Seiyuu

5. Mitsuishi Kotono
Particular roles: Tsukino Usagi from Sailor Moon and Souma Kagura from Fruits Basket.
I imagine she is on most people's list as Usagi. She is so passionate and instense in her vocals. When I first heard her voice was in the Japanese movies from Sailor Moon and it was a welcome relief from the English dub. Her voice was the first I heard in Japanese anime which gives her alot of credit to me.

4. SAITOU Ayaka
Particular roles: Souma Momiji from Fruits Basket
Really this is his only main role but I was completely blown away when I first heard Momiji speak. I adore his voice! It is unbelievably adorable and I could listen to it all day. In the episode of Fruits Basket when he tells the story of the selfless traveler I never wanted the story to end. I am hoping that he will have a lot more roles in the future becaue I'm prepared to buy anything that he will be involved in.

3. sakamoto maaya
Particular roles: Kankazi Hitomi from Escaflowne
Honestly I am more interested in her singing than her voice roles but I love Escaflowne so I need to give her notice there. I first heard her when a friend gave me a mix of Japanese music, including her songs "Hemisphere" and "Into the Light." After downloading what seems a million of songs, loving each new one more than the last I found her Hotchpotch album in a mall. She is such a lovely, lovey woman with so much talent.

2. Seki Tomokazu
Particular roles: Kinomoto Touya from Cardcaptor Sakura, Kyou from Fruits Basket and Fanel Van from Escaflowne.
The first and second seiyuu in this list can be switched back and forth. They are really tied in my first. If I listed all of my favorite anime characters and then wrote their seiyuu beside each all of them would be either this second or first. Really, they get most points for being my favorites because I love the characters they play but they each have so much talent. I love Seki Tomokazu's strong voice. I could not imagine his characters being played by anyone else. It's as though he conforms himself to suit his roles.

1. Ogata Megumi
Particular roles: Tenoh Haruka from Sailor Moon, Tsukishiro Yukito from Cardcaptor Sakura.
Ogata Megumi gets particular perks because she performs Kaze ni Naritai which is absolutely my favorite song ever. She performs the voice of my favorite character, Haruka perfectly. How someone could have so much diverse talent is out of my grasp. She has a voice that is beautiful for both men and women, something few possess.
