1. Porcupine Tree
why i like them: steven wilson's a genius. every album this band makes is different, and still brilliant, and still recognizable as pt. plus, they're top because i got the rereleased version Stupid Dream a couple weeks ago.

random lyrics: "and i'm looking at a blank page now. should i fill it up with words somehow?"

2. Opeth
why i like them: amazing blend of melodic, almost acoustic prog rock, alongside soul-crushing death metal. they alternate between extremes flawlessly. plus, mikael akerfeldt has probably the most amazing voice i've ever heard.
song for the moment: Isolation Years
random lyrics: "the wound in me is pouring out to rest on a lover's shore."

3. Incubus
why i like them: i've been listening to them since middle school. it's rare to find a band this popular that's actually really excellent musically. i watched their dvd last week and it reminded me how much i like them.

random lyrics: "on the surface you hate, but you know you need me."

4. Anathema
why i like them: as if doom metal wasn't awesome enough, they had to morph into this band making some of the most mellow and beautiful music i've ever heard.

random lyrics: "in a split second the foundations for a peaceful fulfilling life can be blasted away to the four corners of reality... almost as if it were an act of truly evil god"

5. Colplay
why i like them: another band i've been listening to since middle school. they may not be the most impressive musicians, but their music is great. they write really great melodies, and it's incredibly enjoyable to listen to.

6. Katatonia
why i like them: like anathema, they've morphed from doom metal into this... and they write really great music. hey, they're coming to san antonio november 11th! i want to go...

7. Pink Floyd
why i like them: perhaps the most well-known prog band, ever... they really changed the way music sounded, and left a huge impact on it. they may not have invented progressive rock, but they made it what it is today.

8. Green Carnation
why i like them: i only have this one album, and i hadn't heard it in quite a while. i won't say they're the best band i've heard, but they make some really good music.

9. Pain of Salvation
why i like them: because you have to listen to something dramatic and over-the-top sometimes... and they're amazing musicians, too!

why i like them: it's steven wilson's softer side! they write really great melodies, and it's a very palatable cd. good driving music especially...
