Much like last week with The Dark Knight, I had something to look forward to this week (well, now last week). I went to see one of the two bands that I first got into live, the Foo Fighters, on the 22nd. In getting prepared for it by listening to their music, it wouldn’t look like I really cared. I’ve noticed I’ve been straying away from the rock that got me to this point (lots of modern rock like Audioslave, Foo Fighters, etc.), so I wasn’t quite as excited for this as I was seeing Queens of the Stone Age and Thrice live. Regardless though, I paid a fair amount to go see them, so yeah, I went.

I got to the arena around 6:00, leaving an hour before the show started. I was able to wait in line for a shirt and go to the bathroom before finally getting to my spot in the crowd. I looked up to see a banner displaying “Year Long Disaster” on the stage. If there is one thing I don’t like about opening acts, you never how many you are going to get and who the hell they are sometimes. Year Long Disaster came on at a few minutes before 7:00 and almost immediately started their set. For the first two songs, I couldn’t get over the fact that I could only hear the freaking bass and how much they were like every other modern rock band. After that, either my ears started going deaf or they just started clicking, but they became tolerable. Some 6 jams later, they were done. Nothing special, but I’ve definitely heard worse.

Next up was Supergrass, the opening act that I knew was playing and actually somewhat prepared for. I was able to listen to their first album and part of their second on the way there, and I figured they would be somewhat good live. Again, luck was not on my side. The band sounded horrible live as everything seemed to blend into a single soundwave of suck. They are honestly the first band that I remember leaving during the middle of their set to use the bathroom, and I’ve heard a live Say Anything (though had I needed to go during their set, I gladly would have too).
I was glad when they were done were done around 8:30. After all that, how could anything get worse? Don’t worry, it did. The people in front of me were also probably the worst I’ve ever had on the floor. When I first saw them during the Year Long Disaster set, I was a bit excited to hopefully meet them. One of them had a Lollapalooza 2007 shirt and the other an Allman Brothers Band shirt, so I mean, they had to be there for the music, right? RIGHT?! Nope, I saw them during the Supergrass set flirting with these chicks, who were obviously drunk with their painfully obnoxious laughs and hands all over the place. They kept going back in and out of the crowd with these drunk chicks, and as easy as it is for most to look past these people and focus on the concert, I COULDN’T. I honestly thought I was going to be at the worst concert of my life for at least 10 minutes. I managed to start talking to someone else just as annoyed with this group as I was, and by the time the Foo Fighters set had started.

The Foo led off with “Let It Die” off their latest record Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace which is all right, but c’mon, no “Monkey Wrench” or “All My Life”? They continued on with “Long Road to Ruin” which was good. However, by the third song, they started an annoying trend of spending an extra minute or so of extended guitar parts to end songs, which was cool. But they did this to almost every song after that. Well, I’m done bitching. They ended up playing a good strong set of 21 songs, including a 3 song encore and a 6 song acoustic set in the middle. I did hear “Cold Day in the Sun” live and acoustic, which is one of my favorite songs by them. The only thing that would have been better would have been hearing “February Stars in the acoustic set as well, but not much I can do now. Dave and the crew overall put on a good show, but it was about middle of the road from the other concerts I’ve been to. It definitely was better than Breaking Benjamin/Three Days Grace (go ahead and laugh) and Thousand Foot Krutch/Skillet (again, go ahead and laugh) but was far and away worse than Thrice and Queens of the Stone Age’s shows. Would I pay to see them again? Possibly, but it would definitely have to be in a small venue and with a good opening band and a bit cheaper. Overall though, it was a decent 40 or so dollars spent. Anyways…

The Week in Review- July 21-27

#10- Disciple (10 plays)
Despite knowing what I was getting into, I took the recommendation of Disciple, a Christian alternative metal, from a friend. It’s everything you’d expect out of a Christian alternative metal, loud, cliché, and eventually monotonous guitar and bass, the occasional scream for the sake of screaming, and a “Christian” twist in terms of lyrics. It’s pretty much the same as alternative metal. I got 10 tracks in Scars Remain before finally shutting it off.

#9- Neutral Milk Hotel (12 plays)
Another recommendation from a different friend, though this time, I knew I had a better chance of liking this. I’ve heard a lot of good things about their album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea; it’s only the 43rd highest rated album of all time on rateyourmusic. I still haven’t made it all the way through after two attempts. Maybe it’s just the mood I’ve been in for both attempts that have been the culprit, but I can’t seem to get into the album. It’s been considered one of the most emotionally moving albums. At this point, I haven’t even been moved to finish it.

#8- Chris Cornell (13 plays)
After hearing the first track sprouting from the Cornell-Timbaland project, I thought I’d dive into the last release from Chris Cornell that was even worth listening to, Unplugged in Sweden. It’s the best thing he has been apart of since his first solo album. Taking his work from all of his previous bands and injecting a few covers, Cornell strips all the songs into nothing but a guitar and his voice. He definitely proves his chops as a live performer as this fits everything I’ve heard about him live, emotionally moving and energetic, even when some of his new material seems to lack both. Lord knows where this current project will take him, but hopefully it sets him back on a track where he wasn’t writing dad-rock or Timba-rock.

#7- Michelle Branch (14 plays)
With news of a new Michelle Branch album coming out later this fall, I thought it would be good to give another listen to her debut, The Spirit Room. It is a bit lyrically stronger at with its better tracks than with Hotel Paper, but I’m glad she was able to put a bit more rock into Hotel Paper rather than more teen pop, which is reminiscent of artists like Avril Lavigne. *shudder*

#6- Danity Kane (18 plays)
I downloaded their latest, Welcome to the Dollhouse, quite a while ago for some reason, and I finally was able to sit down and give it a listen. It’s certainly one of the better albums of 2007, but it does provide a somewhat entertaining listen. “Damaged” is still one of my favorite pop singles of the year. Besides that, most tracks are forgettable, save 2 of You and Lights Out. The production is pretty blah throughout, then again, I’ve never been a huge fan of Diddy.

#5- Timbaland (20 plays)
I decided to give his Shockvalue album a spin again after hearing the new Cornell. Much like when I heard it in the winter, it was hit or miss throughout the entire album. For every great pop track like “Give It to Me”, there was a track like “Fantasy” glaring right back, leaving you mystified as to how it is on the record. The end featuring the more rock leaning tracks were meh besides “Throw It on Me” featuring the Hives. I still surprised that the original “Apologize” by [artists]OneRepublic is so much better than the remix by Timbaland, yet it is the opposite in terms of radio play.

#4- Thrice (24 plays)
I gave their new Myspace Transmissions EP and Vheissu a spin. The live set they did for Myspace was terrific, somehow coming out better than all the studio cuts. Every instrument seemed to come more alive in the set, only adding to their experimental feel. The rest of the listens were Vheissu, which is by far their most varying release. The mix of post-hardcore and experimental rock leaves 11 solid tracks that show the versatility of the band. I firmly believe this band could do any genre if given time and determination. Hell, Dustin Kensrue was able to put out a lyrically strong folk record while Teppei was able to cut 8 tracks with Thrice guitar tech Chris Jones that somehow combine r&b with folk rock to create the band Black Unicorn.

#3- Foo Fighters (23 plays)
A listen to their self-titled and The Colour and the Shape in preparation for the concert. The Colour and the Shape definitely remains my favorite release by them while the self-titled stays just as strong. I’m glad they were able to get out of their recent rut with the previous two records with Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace which comes out as a strong contender for my second favorite from them.

#2- Scars on Broadway (30 plays)
The second group to come out of the System of a Down split, Scars On Broadway, managed to put out a fun listen with their self-titled debut. The album has tracks ranging from hark rock to groovy, psychedelic tracks that show the potential this band has to grow upon for the next album. While this doesn’t look like an album of the year contender, it definitely provides an engaging listen that makes you question whether they could be better than System of a Down.

#1- The Wreckers (45 plays)
After hating the band the minute they came into the scene, my recent cravings for something with a country twist and the prospect of a new Michelle Branch album at the end of the year decided to give The Wreckers another try. I’m certainly glad I did. The duo seems perfect for each other where Jessica’s songwriting alongside Michelle’s voice seem to take over into a great country pop album. I must say, I don’t think I’ve ever given Jessica Harp the credit she deserves. “Cigarettes” and “My, Oh My”, the two standout tracks, both have songwriting credit to her name, “Cigarettes” being strictly her own. I’m now pumped for Jessica Harp’s major label debut as well as Michelle Branch’s new one.

Top Tracks
1. “Cigarettes” 10 plays
2. “Sea of Love” 3 plays
3. “Superstar” 3 plays

While there were several other tracks that were in between these three, these were the standouts of the week. “Cigarettes” is far and away my favorite track from Stand Still, Look Pretty where Michelle sings about waiting for somebody exactly for her. The star of this track is Jessica Harp by far with lyrics being beautiful *sample*

“Sea of Love” by Cat Power stood out from the Juno Soundtrack as one of the few songs I could listen to over and over again off the hit and miss soundtrack (misses being pretty much every Kimya Dawson track). With a voice as strong as Cat’s, I’m honestly surprised I haven’t checked out ANYTHING by her at this point, despite several nods by some of the users here. For shame, Eric, for shame.

“Superstar” by Sonic Youth also stood out from the Juno Soundtrack as well, a wonderful combination of the Carpenters’ pop lyrics and Sonic Youth’s way with the distortion and other wonderful noises them seem to make with their instruments. The best Sonic Youth song I’ve heard at this point. >_>

And now I’m done. Comments, concerns, recommendations, etc.

P.S.: Sorry about the lack of indenting. I blame the new last.fm =P.

Valentine's Day comes and goes every year, though it's never really been anything special to me. It's been more of a "oh shit" reaction every year than "oh my gosh, it's Valentine's Day! ^___^". This mix was originally titled "the Anti-Valentine's Day mix" and was meant to convey my original mood of the day. However, as I continued working on this mix, the more I found it was nothing but Valentine's Day and typical sorrow that comes with some people on this day.

Life's been a mother, what can I say?

T9- Seether (5 plays)~ Just various tracks this week from grunge's last hurrah (unless Army of Anyone has something to say about that...)

T9- Pearl Jam~ An attempt to go through Rearviewmirror gone horribly wrong. I got up to State of Love and Trust, and said, "screw it, let's go find something else." Hopefully Ten can pull me out of that mind set, assuming I go CD shopping before Christmas.

7- Jack Johnson (6 plays)~ He hasn't been on my charts in at least 6 months. The most relaxing music I have in my library. Too bad the spins on my CD player didn't count. I went through In Between Dreams at least once. Good to have you back, Jack! *rimshot*

T5- John Mayer (13 plays)~ One spin plus another track on Continuum. Too bad the umpteen listens on johnmayer.com didn't count for John Mayer and his trio of blues rockers.

T5- Cold~ Year of the Spider is one heck of an album. Too bad it went under the radar, much like the band. Their angsty and guilt-filled lyrics are needed in the era of rock instead of that fake emo crap that owns the radio.

T5- Nirvana~ A spin of Nevermind and the track Been a Son. One of the best rocking albums of all-time. If you don't feel the need to stand up and rock while listening to this, I feel sorry for you.

4- Soundgarden (16 plays)~ One spin on Superunknown and then some change. Superunknown must've sold those 5 million copies quietly because people still don't know who the heck they are, and it's a damn shame too.

3- Foo Fighters (30 plays)~ A spin on In Your Honor and The Colour and the Shape each (though the track amounts don't add up lol). The Colour and the Shape is still their best album to date. Rocka t its finest. In Your Honor, however, has been an acquired taste..

2- Breaking Benjamin (54 plays)~ A few spins on Phobia. This was originally a sell out record in my mind when I first heard it. Now, Saturate sounds like a mediocre record while this shows the band coming into their own with a album of 10 stand-on-their-own tracks (Topless... argh). Phobia didn't quite reach the plateau set by Pearl Jam, but came damn close for album of 2006.

1- Papa Roach (99 plays)~ A guiltly pleasure of mine I suppose. I managed to borrow a mix composed of The Paramour Sessions and parts of Infest and lovehatetragedy. Thank god there was nothing like Scars or Take Me on this mix. Otherwise, hell would have been unleashed.

Feel free to make any recommendations, comments, concerns, etc.

Anyways...

T9 P.O.D. (5 plays)- Just Boom and Youth of the Nation. Not much else I have heard by this group.

T9 Tenacious D (5 plays)- Experimented with this Duo. I enjoyed Wonderboy and Tribute. I really wasn't fond of the other stuff I heard.

8 Nickel Creek (6 plays)- The Hand Song and Tomorrow Is A Long Time show Sara's brilliance as a vocalist.

I'm going to borrow something from a fellow user kalsonberry and ask for some songs by artists...

Queens of the Stone Age- Some stuff with Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters involved please.
The Killers- Anything will do.
Rammstein- ^See above^

A much tighter week than most, let's start with a clear cut number 10....

10 Rascal Flatts (12 plays)- Just a listen through my edit of Feels Like Today. Too bad I'm getting lots of country recommendations now.

9 Rob Thomas (13 plays)- I picked on my copy ... Something to Be and gave my favorite songs off it a few listens each. Darn good male vocalist.

8 They Might Be Giants (14 plays)- Went through what I have 2-3 times. I definitely want to hear more of them soon.

T6 Vanessa Carlton (21 plays)- Finally got through Be Not Nobody in its entirity for the first time in months. I can't wait until I find a store that holds Harmonium.

T6 Barenaked Ladies (21 plays)- Each week I get further into their Greatest Hits album (Finally can enjoy 1-8 altogether as opposed to just 3-5). Here's to hoping I get further.

5 Green Day (28 plays)- Still addicted to American Idiot...such a great album.

4 Pink Floyd (30 plays)- I thought I went through The Wall twice this week, but I guess I only went through it once. Maybe the "lost" tracks will show up next week alongside The Dark Side of the Moon.

3 Foo Fighters (34 plays)- First week not at the numero uno position. Such a shame to see their streak done...

2 Audioslave (55 plays)- So close yet so far... They passed The Beatles on my overall chart, so there is the consolation. Can't wait until September... :)

1 System of a Down (60 plays)- I had to double check this after seeing them on the top. Going through all the songs I have by them (28) twice seemed to boost them to the top, and it could be more if I actually got the songs my friend told me to get from their debut (I believe).

No Beatles in the top ten... looks like my Beatlemania is nearing its end.

And that's the end of this week. Any other recommendations would be cool.

Again, we begin this week's countdown with a tie...

T9 Arctic Monkeys (6 plays)- Went through most of my library and came through their tracks twice. I really would like to pick up Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not soon.

T9 Natasha Bedingfield (6 plays)- Came home after a party and gave all the songs I have from Unwritten a listen. One of the better pop artists in the industry

8 Michelle Branch (8 plays)- I wish I had more than 5 songs by her. Oh well.

7 Rascal Flatts (11 plays)- One listen through an edited version of Feels Like Today (I took out Here's To You because it sucks). That listen reaffirmed that Rascal Flatts is the best country group in the industry.

6 Queen (12 plays)- Same stuff as last week.

5 Barenaked Ladies (27 plays)- Just went through their Greatest Hits and some tunes caught on shuffle. They are one hell of an alternative band.

4 The Beatles (64 plays)- Finally conquered the 30 song White Album. Very solid album but it has quite a few weak points. *coughRevolution9cough* Notice the number of plays. Coincedence, I think not.

3 Audioslave (81 plays)- Just another week for my favorite band. Why the hell must September be so far away? I <del>want</del> need Revelations.

2 Green Day (89 plays)- American Idiot almost stole the show with its 5+ complete listens this week. (FYI: I'm talking about the album) I really enjoyed the album. I hope their next is a rock opera as well.

1 Foo Fighters (92 plays)- This goes to show my Foo Fighters obsession wasn't a one week deal. I need to pick up the debut and There Is Nothing Left To Lose soon. Long live the Foo!

Last Week's Recommendations:
The Wall- Listening to it as this journal is being typed. Very, VERY good.
Dark Side of the Moon- Nope. I'm hoping a week or two can clear this up.
lostprophets- I listened to Last Train Home. Anything else I should listen to?
Slipknot- Found a mix with Before I Forget and Duality. I only liked Before I Forget. Not sure if I will like anything else...

And this week is done. As I said last week, feel free to comment or make recommendations. I'm open to almost anything.

Counting down from 10 to 1 this week beginning with a tie for 8th...

T8 Daniel Powter (12 plays)- Listened to his debut album once and others on while on shuffle. Pretty solid artist so far.

T8 Pink Floyd (12 plays)- The first of what I hope is a long stay in my weekly Top 10. Just went through the 4 tracks I have by them and Money 5 or 6 times. :D

T8 Green Day (12 plays)- International Superhits! on shuffle. 'Nuff said.

T6 Jack Johnson (16 plays)- A listen through In Between Dreams. Not much else I can say.

T6 Queen (16 plays)- Got through half of Greatest Hits and Classic Queen respectively. Not one of my favorite bands, but they are pretty good.

5 System of a Down (26 plays)- The Tournament of Rock ended on one of the few forums I post at and this marks the end of what looks like a 2-3 week mainstay. I'm sad to say the least.

4 Barenaked Ladies (39 plays)- One of those bands I just discovered. Dang good to say the least. I dug the vocals and lyrics more than I thought I would.

3 The Beatles (45 plays)- The unstoppable force that is the Beatles puts in another 40+ plays this week. Nothing I can do except sit back and relax...

2 Audioslave (56 plays)- A listen through their debut and AOL Sessions combined with songs from the shuffle lands them here at 2. This week reinstated the fact that Cornell is one hell of a vocalist.

1 Foo Fighters (97 plays)- Surprise, surprise! The Foo finishes at the Top Spot due to my addiction to The Colour and the Shape and the discovery of One by One. Another week like this could land them in the top 3 overall for sure and maybe at the hallowed number 1.

That's all for this week! Feel free to make suggestions and comments!

Edit: Added the play counts!
