Tue 20 May – The Click Five Live in Hong Kong

"No one's going to forget it, it's going to be raging, crazy, awesome.. welcome." That was what the band promised their fans and that was what we got exactly.

The crowd was alerted to the opening of the show as the huge projection screen that hid the stage from the crowd was lit up with the pictures of the band. Anticipation rapidly built up as the music grew louder and louder, until the screen fell aside and the actual band jumped right into opening track, 'Flipside'.

That led to 'Happy Birthday' where lead singer Kyle enthusiastically told the crowds that it was his birthday.

New songs on their recently re-released album, 'Modern Minds and Pastimes- Tour Edition' were played, ('Summertime' is a catchy, feel-good song, quite fitting for the coming season); as were songs from their previous album, 'Good Day' and hit single 'Just The Girl'.

The band also paid tribute to one of their biggest influences by playing a Beatles' song.

The crowds' enthusiasm did not go undetected by the band, and even the they themselves could not hide their own amazement at the huge reception. During 'I'm Getting Over You', which was nicely done as an acoustic set, they were beaming right back at us from up onstage, gratified and astounded.

The crowd quiet down for the slow ballads 'Empty' and two never-before-heard songs, 'Don't Let Me Go' and 'There You Are', which were sweet wistful little pieces that sounded quite different from their usual material.

When they took a short break, fans broke out in traditional 'Happy Birthday' for Kyle and Joey who's birthdays are both in May.

Solos were introduced at the end of their cover of 'Pump It Up'. First up, Joe Guese, guitarist and headbanger; next Ben Romans, the sexy keyboardist who posed a lot to the cheers from the crowd; Ethan Mentzer who worked the crowd to a frenzy by rubbing his bass against his mike stand; and Joey Zehr who beat out awesome rhythms and fired away at the bass drum. All the while, lead singer accompanied the solos with his unique interpretative dances that had the crowd screaming for more. (Don't you just love it when Kyle does that.)

We knew there had to be an encore because 'Jenny' their single had not come up yet when they all went backstage for about three minutes. Three minutes that were filled with stomping, cheers and unified yells of 'Click Five! Click Five! Click Five!'

And true to that, they came back up and blasted 'Jenny', followed by 'So It Goes' and ending with a strong dance number 'Headlight Disco' in which Kyle invited the whole audience to stand up and start jumping. To just get up from your seats and come down and start dancing. Which of course, we did.

The show ended with an ear shattering 'Yea!' 'Oh yea!' session between Kyle and the crowd.

Anyway, the show was pretty amazing and everyone was so energetic. Where do they find all that energy?! The fun never seemed to stop long enough for us to catch a breather. You simultaneously want to keep on screaming and jumping, while feeling wretched from the smell of sweat and bruised from all the elbowing, even as your feet scream for you to stop.

There was a meet and greet for lucky fans who bought the tour edition CD at the show and got hold of the 30 golden tickets hidden in it. Tough luck for others, but don't worry because I'm sure they'll be back in no time. They do have massive support here in Hong Kong!
