Here is a list of all the songs that I have both the original and a cover of on my i-tunes:

Original:I Feel the Earth Move by Carole King
Which version I like better: Probably the original, though I do love Mandy's comtemporary take on it as well.

Original:Home Again by Carole King
Which version I like better: The original is great, but I prefer the cover, because I just love Vonda.

Original:Help Me by Joni Mitchell
Which version I prefer: The original. Mandy just can't a hold a candle to Joni.

Original: Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel
The original. No one does it better than Paul & Art; though Emily & Amy do a fine job paying tribute to the legendary 60's tune!

Original: New York State of Mind by Billy Joel
Which version I prefer: The cover. Of course Billy's is a classic, but Adam has a much better voice.
You've Got a Friend by James Taylor
Which version I prefer: No contest, definetely the cover. I grew up listening to and loving JT's version, and it wasn't until I was a senior in college that I found out that he didn't write it!

Last night, I saw Rachael Sage at Club Passim, and I got to meet her after the show! She was so awesome and funny and cool and sweet. I told her how much I loved her music and that I was a huge fan and that I have all her CD's, and naturally, she was thrilled and so appreciative that someone loved her music as much as I did. Seriously, I can't figure out why she isn't famous! She should be as well-known as Ani DiFranco or Tori Amos, if not bigger. For that matter, I don't understand why people bother to listen to Ani and Tori, when Rachael Sage is out there! (No offense to anyone who likes them- I have at least one CD by each of them- but Rachael is just so much better!)

Her show was great. She has such an awesome stage presence and she was cracking jokes and faking various accents throughout her performance. And her voice is simply gorgeous live! She sang: Lonely Streets, Unbeauty, Bravedancing, Wildflower, Chandelier,Angel In My View, plus a debut of a brand new song she had just written. As soon as she played the opening chords of "Wildflower" (which is my favorite) I let out a very loud cheer. She stopped playing, looked in my direction, and said, "Mo-om! I told you to stop following me around!" The only disappointment about the show is that it wasn't longer. She was the opening act for some Scottish act I'd never heard of- Julie Fowlis, I think? I stayed for Julie's performance, but left after the first few songs- I wasn't crazy about her.

I still can't believe that I got to meet Rachael Sage; and how awesome she is in real life! I hope that I get to see her again sometime soon!

Are the '80's back?

A few months ago, when I saw a college girl walking around Boston wearing neon pink leggings, I figured she was just making a fashion statement, albeit a very dated one. But lately, I've seen more and more teens and early 20-somethings wearing attire that looks like the clothing that was last seen when Bush Senior was president. It seems that I can't go anywhere without seeing Day-Glo colors and glittery foil T-shirts. Just yesterday, I sat next to a guy on the T wearing sneakers the color of Orange Crush. Ugh, this hideous retro fashion reminds me of my middle school years- not exactly the most pleasant memories.
And it's not just fashion that seems to be stuck in the late 80's and early 90's. The New Kids on the Block have reunited, and they are back on tour, for pete's sake! And what's even crazier is that GROWN WOMEN of my generation are paying HUNDREDS of dollars to see them in concert! Huh? What's going on here?
And it gets even worse. I just read the other day that 90210 is coming back to TV, complete with Shannon Doherty and the rest of the original cast. Let's get real, folks: does that really need to happen? I've never heard of any TV show going back on the air after it was canceled. Why does it have to be the cheesiest one in history that gets the honor of returning?
Oh, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I admit that I was once guilty of liking all these fads when they were popular. I had a whole wardrobe full of fluorescent colored clothing that I thought was "totally radical," I thought that Joey McIntyre and Donnie Walberg of NKOTB were "wicked cute," and I faithfully watched 90120 every week and had a poster of Luke Perry hanging up on my wall. But that was twenty years ago! Things have changed a lot since then.
I know, it's retro now, and retro is cool. It seems that whatever was popular 20 years prior always makes a comeback. In the '70's, the '50's were hot; in the '80's, the '60's were in; in the '90's, the '70's were popular; and now that it's the '00's, it makes perfect sense that the '80's are the cool decade to look back at. I think it's because when people come of age, they try to imitate the trends and fads that were popular when their parents came of age. My parents were Baby Boomers, and I've come to have a fascination with the 60's and 70's from hearing all their stories over the years. It makes perfect sense that today's college students are fascinated with the '80's, since they were born in the early 1990's, which means their parents came of age when New Kids on the Block first came on the scene.
However, the retro scene brings some good news. If the trend of idolizing the fads of twenty years earlier continues, then in a few years the 90's will be cool again! Flannel will make a comeback, the Smashing Pumpkins and Phish will get back together, and "My So Called Life," "Friends," and maybe even "Seinfeld" will go back on the air. In fact, the seeds of a '90's revival are already in the air. The Gin Blossoms and Toad The West Sprocket are both back together and are currently touring. A few fashion magazines have shown plaid prints and ribbed sweaters. Now that is a revival I certainly could deal with!
Until then, I guess I'll just have to deal with the neon-clad, 90210-watching college students around me, and be thankful that we've yet to see a revival of the worst '80's trend ever- big hair! If that ever happens, then I'm outta here. I'm going to drive off to Seattle in a green Ford Taurus like the one my mom had in the 1990's, while drinking Mango Madness Snapple and listening to a mix tape I made (yes, tape, not CD, that's important) of songs by Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morrisette, Jewel, and of course some Nirvana.
