A disclaimer to those who look for certain albums on these lists: This is based only on albums I own, so of course I'm missing some great ones here. I had to cut out a heck of a lot of wonderful albums that I do own, too. It should also be known that the order I've placed them in (and even, to an extent, the albums I've chosen) could change simply based on my mood or the time of day. That said, here we go!

25. Country Willie by Willie Nelson. I don't know why I include this, but everything here just works. He's not known for this album, really, but I think the songwriting is fantastic and his voice sounds better than usual.

24. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. Well, this is just pure California pop, isn't it? So many great songs here. Yes, it's hugely popular and has sold millions, and it's probably a little overrated. But hey, I love it.

23. Let It Bleed, by The Rolling Stones. My favorite Rolling Stones album, I think, although Exile is pretty awesome, too. I kind of like the country/rockabilly thing they've got going on here on a few of the songs.

22. 6 and 12 String Guitar, by Leo Kottke. Absolutely virtuosic guitar playing on this record. And the tunes are nice, too. Very enjoyable.

21. August and Everything After, by The Counting Crows. This has been a favorite for a while. It's so melancholy and emotionally over-wrought, especially in the vocals. It's a great set of songs. I don't think they ever topped this.

20. John Denver's Greatest Hits, by John Denver. This music just puts me in a good mood. It's sunny sing-along road music (although the songs aren't really as cheerful as they sound). You can hear everything in this man's voice. I think his version of Leaving on a Jet Plane (a song he actually wrote) tops all the others.

19. Essential Steve Earle, by Steve Earle. My parents listened to him while I was growing up, so this is a bit nostalgic. He was an excellent songwriter, though, and his style is unlike any other. I love "I Ain't Ever Satisfied."

18. No Name Face, by Lifehouse. This was my favorite for a long time. It's still wonderful. I still think this album has some of the greatest lyrics I've ever heard. The song "Simon" just blows my mind.

17. Mr. Tambourine Man, by The Byrds. Also music that puts a smile on my face. These guys perfected the harmony thing, didn't they? Beautiful stuff. They did a heck of a lot of Dylan covers, and they're all good. I always think of them as a kind of cross between the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

16. Five Leaves Left, by Nick Drake. This is sad stuff. This guy's delivery of his songs is really something else. Just the most mellow, melancholy-infused, affecting stuff you'll hear. He lays it out there.

15. Imagine, by John Lennon. What can I say about this? It's a great album. More listenable than his first (although that was a masterpiece too), and higher quality than some of his other stuff. He still has issues, though some of the tunes are downright jaunty.

14. Summerteeth, by Wilco. I didn't get this album at first. It was my first Wilco album and I didn't know what to expect. I listened to it over and over, though, and it really grew on me. I think it's brilliant.

13. Sheer Heart Attack, by Queen. Ah, Queen, my old friend. I almost put in A Night at the Opera instead of this, but something in me wanted this one. Something for everyone here -- it really is a fantastic album from a fantastic band.

12. Led Zeppelin IV, by Led Zeppelin. There's really nothing I can say about this that hasn't been said. It's great. I like "Going to California."

11. Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, by Derek and the Dominos. The first time I heard this, my jaw dropped open. This was just unlike anything I had heard. The voice, the guitars (Eric Clapton AND Duane Allman!), the emotion. And, of course, "Layla."

10. The Doors, by The Doors. Jim Morrison's voice gives me shivers. It's so powerful, so loaded with pain. This album is something special -- these guys knew what they were doing.

9. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, by Paul McCartney. My favorite McCartney album, I think. It's more down-to-earth than some of his others, a little more laid-back. I think the cover is perfect, and pretty much every song on here is a keeper, packed with that McCartney gift for melody.

8. Closing Time, by Tom Waits. And here we have one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. This is the stuff to listen to at 3am. I like early Tom Waits more than his later stuff. Just some really beautiful arrangements, and his voice isn't quite as gruff and raspy -- although that's great too, in its own way.

7. Graceland, by Paul Simon. What to say? Paul Simon is something of a genius. The songs on this album are infectious and rousing. A good album for a bus ride.

6. After the Gold Rush, by Neil Young. I discovered this one pretty recently, and it's really shot to the top. It was my first introduction to Neil Young, and what an introduction! It's a gorgeous album. No, his singing isn't perfect, but the sentiment behind his voice is what counts here.

5. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, by Bob Dylan. I could have gone with Blood on the Tracks, but I think I like this one a little more today. Besides, "Don't Think Twice" is one of his greatest songs in a career full of great ones. This is anytime music, it's that good.

4. Wildflowers, by Tom Petty. This one has been in my car CD player continuously for weeks now. I love it. I can't get enough. The elegance of his guitar, the relaxed feel, the songs about moving on and getting going. It's damn near perfect.

3. Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon & Garfunkel. Well, really, when an album starts off with the jaw-dropper "Bridge over Troubled Water," you know it's going to be good. This one doesn't disappoint. It's all wonderful. And "The Boxer" is a top-notch song.

2. Help!, by The Beatles. My original favorite Beatles album (now it's hard to choose between them), and I still absolutely love it. It's addicting from beginning to end. The Beatles had such charisma, such energy, and they had so much fun with the music, it's hard not to smile along while you listen.

1. Late For The Sky, by Jackson Browne. And this beauty is number one for today. It really is an amazing album. His lyrics are deeply personal and speak right to the heart, and his singing is so smooth and gentle. The songwriting is great and the arrangements are flattering. It's a heavy album, but a hugely rewarding one.


Hmm. I have to say, I'm a little surprised at the way it turned out. Really, the top 10 or so could have been ordered completely differently, just depending on the way I feel. I'm happy with this, though. In other news, I've been listening to Neil Young's album After the Gold Rush quite a bit lately. It really grows on you -- at first, parts seem kind of flimsy, kind of dated. His voice is different and takes a bit of getting used to, and his singing definitely isn't perfect. But I think that's part of what's so great about the album -- it's not perfect, it's altogether *human*. Anyone can relate. Anyone can admire his songwriting and appreciate his wordplay. And geez, some of those songs are just so gorgeous! Birds comes to mind. I read something someone once said about this album: that listening to it feels like home. I have to agree. It's been a heck of a year in my musical world. I've discovered more stuff than I ever thought I would and broadened my horizons significantly.

I've become something of a classic rock nut this year, starting with my infatuation with Queen beginning around January or February. Queen was pretty much all I listened to for months, maybe. I loved A Night at the Opera, A Day At The Races, and Sheer Heart Attack. But then I started branching out somewhat, looking into bands that my dad really likes. I found some great stuff: Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul Simon.

And then, The Beatles. Of course I'd always heard of them-- you can't grow up in our society and not know who they are. But they had never really appealed to me. I had heard songs like Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, and Let It Be, but they had never jumped out at me, begged me to listen again. I bought Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in July because it was highly acclaimed and seemed like one of those albums you should listen to at some point. It grew on me. A lot. I soon had most of The Beatles' discography (I'm still missing Magical Mystery Tour, Let It Be, and Please Please Me), and I'm just astonished by their brilliance and consistently good output. Pretty much every song they did was something special!

I've also discovered bands and artists like Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Cream, and Tom Waits, along with most of the groups on my charts.

It's truly been a magical year!
