This is the first of releases that will come in 2011 (including both new and old material).

The title “Die Helden Sind Nicht Mehr”, is a quote taken from the motion picture Himmel Über Berlin, one of my favorite films.
In the music this reference also comes back in with several different samples from the film that are used.
The piece on Die Helden Sind Nicht Mehr is a recording done in Theater Kikker on February 15th, 2005. This goes way back, though sounds still fresh. All recordings have been edited in November 2010 after which then got mastered by Jos Smolders.

With “Die Helden Sind Nicht Mehr” Orphax experiments with elements he usually does not use in his work, like rhythms and (hidden) melodies instead of drones.

The 3" CD-R is limited to 55 copies and comes in small sized DVD Box and costs 7 euro without shipping
Or you can buy the digital download version for 2,50 euro.
Buying the release can be done through where you can also preview it http://orphax.bandcamp.com/album/die-helden-sind-nicht-mehr
==
Live dates:
Staplerfahrer:
10/04/11 Sonic Terror 6, Hangar20, Breda (w/ Svartvit, Heidi Unterpantsch, Kasper van Hoek and much more)
20/05/11 (h)ear – Experimental Audio Research, Heerlen (w/ Jozef Van Wissem)

Jos Smolders & Orphax:
26/02/11: (h)ear - Experimental Audio Research, Heerlen

Sindre Bjerga & Nils Rostad:
08/03/11: Moving Furniture Records HQ, Amsterdam

That's it for now.

Greetings,

Sietse

http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com/
http://www.orphax.com/

OUT NOW:
MFR008: a vibrant struggle - Between The Woods And Frozen Lake
MFR009: Ubeboet - Archival (vinyl LP)
MFR010: Rose & Sandy - Play Cat's Cradle (CD)

Orphax - Die Helden Sind Nicht Mehr (3" CR-R/Download)<span> </span>

UPCOMING:
Machinist - Of What Once Was (CD, expected Spring, 2011)
Orphax - De Tragedie Van Een Liedjesschrijver Zonder Woorden (CD, expected Summer, 2011)
Accrual - Cheophiori (CD, reissue, expected Fall 2011)

The debut album for the Scottish duo Rose & Sandy - play Cat's Cradle is now up for pre-order.

ABOUT THE PLAY CAT'S CRADLE

I don't know exactly what the instrument is. It's probably a kind of zither; that's how my dad described it to me when he first told me about it.I was immediately fascinated by his description: a set of strings on the left side that was blocked into eleven chromatic 'chord banks', each adjustable between major, minor and suspended fourth via little levers at the front that literally tightened the string by a semitone; on the right, three octaves of notes backed by an image of a piano keyboard for guidance. When I finally set eyes on it, I was in love; it's a truly beautiful object, about three feet wide and two deep, with surprisingly detailed religious iconography inside each of the sound holes. And then there was the sound - like plucked piano strings, but with resonance that's amazing even for an acoustic instrument. A single note can hold for a couple of minutes if there's an adequate surfeit of background noise.

It came into my father's possession as a loan from some nuns he knew through his church work. I know. One older sister at the convent had played it at times of worship, but since she had passed away it wasn't used, so they wondered if he had a use for it. It was a kind of extended loan of the sort that often occurs in the weird system of quasi-ownership that persists in these circles. I hinted heavily until such time as the freehold drifted towards me.

I was told that the usual technique was to only pluck the melody on the right hand side and let the chords on the left thrum by themselves through vibration. It was a beguiling notion, and it does work, but there are so many other options, including prepared techniques, hitting notes in different ways, and adjusting which part of the string is struck, that I tended to run the whole gamut.

Every google search I've tried brings up similar-ish things, but nothing quite like this. It could be unique, but I doubt it; I'm guessing it's just a little obscure.

As soon as I heard it, I determined to collaborate with Rose on a project not dissimilar to his Accrual venture, whereby live instrumentation (guitar, in the case of Accrual) was used as the solitary sound source and processed live. All of the work you hear was created in two impromptu sessions where we agreed a key, hit record and just started playing. The only edits are start and end points, plus a splicing of each of the five pieces together to make a single track.

We've called it 'Cat's Cradle'. It represents a few different notions: Firstly, the many strings mirror the manifold web of twine used in the child's game of the same name; second, we've both become fathers in the recent past and I wanted to reflect the multitude of joy, worry and responsibility that "the cradle" brings; thirdly, there's the air of puzzle in much of my dealings with the instrument, be they of its origin or my (at times clumsy) playing. Imperfection and the sense of an ever-evolving process seemed to dominate its aura, so the naive complexity of the tactile folk game seemed to fit well.

I had originally done something vaguely along the lines of automatic writing for liner notes, whereby I just let me mind wonder as the music was played back in real-time, but it didn't chime too well. In the end, it could be summed up in one line:

"We pass the cradle back and forth. I hope I never make a mistake."

We hope that the sound could be recreated in a live environment, as that's essentially how it was created, but there's a drawback: somebody (i.e. me) will have to tune the 114 strings...

Sandy
Glasgow
2010

ABOUT Rose & Sandy
Behind this name which suggests tow ladies working together we find two of Scottish finest musicians: Ruaridh Law (TVO/The Village Orchestra, Accrual and more) and Dave Donnelly (The Production Unit and more). While they both have their feet in beat driven music for their project Rose & Sandy they take a swing quite the opposite way. From improvised processing, like on their full-length debut they present here, to field-recordings and live video presentations.
Not only have they got a range of solo releases on labels such as Highpoint Lowlife and Stuffrecords, they also run the new upcoming Scottish label “Broken20” together with Dave Fyans (Erstlaub) and are involved with several concert and party events organized by Numbers (in Glasgow).

ORDERING
The cd itself is expected to come out in November but if you order now you will send the album as soon as we get it.
There are two different versions of the album. There is a normal version and a special limited edition of 20 which comes with an exclusive picture of the zither that was used by the duo Rose & Sandy.

Prices for the album including shipping:
Normal:
EU: 11 euro
ROW: 12 euro

Special Edition:
EU: 16 euro
ROW : 17 euro

You can pre-order the album by sending an email to info@movingfurniturerecords.com

More info and soundsamples can be found at http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com/?p=175
Moving Furniture Records

While at times there are hints of musique-concrete masters like Nurse With Wound at the same time ethereal moments that in a distant remind of the classic Popol Vuh work. But while this inspiration can be heard Ubeboet has his own sound. As a true master he creates his own minimal sound world.
Archival is released as vinyl only release limited to 200 and is available through http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com.

ABOUT UBEBOET
Ubeboet is the musical project of M.A. Tolosa from Madrid, Spain.

Moving Furniture Records
Last week the debut album 4 AM by small things on sundays got released.

I myself am really happy with this release of experimental ambient music. Here are some words the Danish duo had to say themselves:

small things on sundays – 4 AM

”4 AM” is the first full-length release from the Danish duo Small Thing on Sundays.
The members’ interest for music and vinyl records led to the formation in 2005, starting with free improvisations with electronic treatments of vinyl records in any tempo. Since then, Small Things on Sundays has refined their signature sounds, and added more sound sources. The duo works with different stylistic challenges in periods of time. Prior to Small Things on Sundays, both members have made music in various constellations - Henrik Bagner played in a free-structure noice-guitar band in the 90-es, which unfortunately never left the rehearsal space, and Claus Poulsen has been playing since his childhood in various bands, the best known is the noise-ensemble Alarm112.

“4 AM” came from a string of sessions using vinyl records at very slow speeds and detuned guitars played with a violin bow. This produced a string of organic, multilayered dark ambient tracks. On muliple playbacks, the listener will dig deeper into the layers of the music, exposing new details.
The title refers to the blurred line between night and day. Did you suddenly wake up or are you still in a dream? Perhaps the sounds will take you to a place of daydreaming. A movie soundtrack for your own inner film.
An other reference to the title is, that this is the hour of the day, where human activities are at a minimum. Surroundings are cast in darkness, but where will be a residue from human-made sources or the faint light from nature. And if you look up you will see a starlit sky or the white smoke from the nearby power plant. So perhaps we are romantic realists?

If you are interested in a a copy of 4 AM it is available through http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com (you can also listen to some samples and see a free video for the first track Below The Surface).

As some of you might have noticed the whole Moving Furniture Records website has been redesigned. We are now using Wordpress, which makes it easier to post updates, and also easier to follow with RSS feeds.

Some future news:
Next month will see the light of a new release by a vibrant struggle, a collaboration between Steffan de Turck (Staplerfahrer) and Jan M-Iversen and Sindre Bjerga (from the amazing bjerga/iversen releases on Digitalis Foxglove and Time-Lag to name a few).
After that we will issue our first vinyl album, which will be by the amazing Ubeboet from Madrid, Spain. I hope to have more info and maybe some pre-order options soon. The pre-master is a gem, so looking forward to get the final issue at hands when it is completely done.

Orphax
Also with Orphax there is some upcoming material.

Contents
1) Moving Furniture Records: new release
2) Orphax: live performance
3) Zonderland: an amazing review

Moving Furniture Records

On Tuesday 27th the first CD-R release of Kansas based musician H Stewart got released.
As a homage to her late Grandmother Dora Elizabeth she wrote an album about her life from birth to death. A true story of love and pain.
The following words have been written by Larry Johnson describing the album greatly:

H Stewart - Dora Elizabeth

The passing of a close relative is one of life’s unfortunate, but certain to occur, events. This is even more true if that loved one served the roles of friend, comforter, teacher, and was also a source refuge and unconditional love. Such individuals are never really forgotten, because the essence of their being is forever embedded in our mind. The things that they did and said – the things that shaped our lives and inspired us - endure. Nor are thoughts about them ever absent from our minds or long. A certain odor or sound or even the slant of sunlight at a particular time of day or season might summon some recollection or fond memory of the person.

Dora Elizabeth is a milestone for H Stewart in two respects. Most important, the album serves as a tribute and memorial to her maternal Grandmother. From the composer’s heart to the listener, this is a musical story of Dora Elizabeth’s life. To quote H Stewart:

There are those of us lucky enough to have encountered the gods of our own time, the people who helped create and shape us into what we are and what we give the world. I was but clay in her loving hands. Let us all take this opportunity to ensure that she and all of those who have shaped us never really die.

She sums it all up quite nicely with these poetic words: “all the good things about me are her fault.”

Dora Elizabeth lived some 87 years enjoying life in general but also taking in stride all of the tribulations that such a long lifespan brings. “Comprehending Sunrise” celebrates her birth while “A Ballad for the Lost “and “The Dirt Road” chronicle the hard times of the Great Depression. The “Elk’s Lodge” memorialises a decade long courtship and eventual uniting of Dora Elizabeth and H Stewart’s grandfather. They were married at an Elk’s lodge in Arkansas. The track “Her Love” has a significance spanning the entirety of Dora Elizabeth’s life, while “Cancer” marks the final stage of the story, a beautiful lamentation that brings Dora Elizabeth’s life to a poignant close. The hazy ambiance and reverberating vocals of “Ever After” provide for aural metaphor of a surreal conversation from beyond the grave and track makes for a fitting conclusion to the album.

In addition to being H Stewart’s first physical release, Dora Elizabeth marks an important departure in style from previous netlabel releases on Clinical Archives, Frigida Records, and Test Tube being her first serious venture into instrumentation and is certainly her most musical release to date. Created on a Casio with the assistance bass player and sound engineer Robert Herrmann II, the majority of the tracks are instrumental, but her sweet, haunting vocals are still present, and especially notable is the heart-rending “Her Love”. The tracks were recorded and layered before being processed electronically.

No specific genre does justice in describing Dora Elizabeth in its entirety. Experimental in general, Dora Elizabeth blends elements of traditional musical samples and structures with the highly atypical. In listening again to her prior works, it’s clear that H Stewart is not afraid of testing the boundaries of experimental music and pushing into new territory. Dora Elizabeth takes her and the listener another step further. I’m sure that Dora Elizabeth is pleased.

Dora Elizabeth is limited to 100 pieces and available through http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com and can be streamed for free through http://movingfurniturerecords.bandcamp.com/

Go check it out.

Orphax
Two weeks I had a live performance together with The Julie Mittens and Cave at the OCCII in Amsterdam. I didn't mail about it because everything got arrange at really short notice. Though, I can tell it was an amazing evening. It was probably my loudest, most intense set so far. Layers of field recordings with vocal drones and electric razors building up to a massive psychedelic climax. It got recorded but I don't have to recordings yet so don't know what will happen with these.
But for those who missed out on it and can't wait to hear it next Friday I am playing a similar set in Eindhoven.
Here is the press text (dutch only, sorry):

The PAL Project presenteert:
Een avond van experiment op 6 November van 19:30 tot 23:00 bij galerie Kelderman en van Noort in Eindhoven.

Een avond met lekker eten, audio en video uit delen van het universum die heel ver weg of was het nou heel dichtbij zijn. Een experiment van totaalervaring binnen deze ruimte-tijd. Muziek en geprojecteerde beelden die als zowel oeroud als hyper futuristisch gezien kunnen worden. Kom gezellig een hapje eten en relaxen op deze 'intergalactische' sferen!

Line up:

Ruistuin: [Myspace info] Ruistuin is an experimental audio project, mainly focussing on circuitbent electronica and ambient. The project was started while experimenting with a heavily modified Sk-5, and some fx. Afterwards a circuitbent Sk-1 joined the setup. All tracks are sample based, and the samples have been taken from all kinds of soundsources, like beer bottles, kalimba's and trains... Given this, it's some of my most recent material. I feel that this is a difficult series of works for me to put into context, honestly. There were so many revisions at hand with these pieces and the works didn't really begin to assume a finalized format until late November. Additionally, I had thought about quitting altogether due to health problems related to my hearing and due to the emotional fallout associated with the resurfacing of an old lover of 5 years past, hence the pieces titled 'My Teeth' and 'Her Teeth' sprung into existence. The works are the product of manipulations involving piano and 2 broken phonographs. There's a few field recordings of birds that frequent the East Crossroads of Kansas City mixed in also.

You can listen to the album at Red Is The Color Of Price By Relation.
The album is available through http://www.movingfurniturerecords.com

Next up are albums by Freiband, Jos Smolders, Celer, Erstlaub, The Village Orchestra/Accrual and much more.
