Last week the debut album 4 AM by small things on sundays got released.

I myself am really happy with this release of experimental ambient music. Here are some words the Danish duo had to say themselves:

small things on sundays – 4 AM

”4 AM” is the first full-length release from the Danish duo Small Thing on Sundays.
The members’ interest for music and vinyl records led to the formation in 2005, starting with free improvisations with electronic treatments of vinyl records in any tempo. Since then, Small Things on Sundays has refined their signature sounds, and added more sound sources. The duo works with different stylistic challenges in periods of time. Prior to Small Things on Sundays, both members have made music in various constellations - Henrik Bagner played in a free-structure noice-guitar band in the 90-es, which unfortunately never left the rehearsal space, and Claus Poulsen has been playing since his childhood in various bands, the best known is the noise-ensemble Alarm112.

“4 AM” came from a string of sessions using vinyl records at very slow speeds and detuned guitars played with a violin bow. This produced a string of organic, multilayered dark ambient tracks. On muliple playbacks, the listener will dig deeper into the layers of the music, exposing new details.
The title refers to the blurred line between night and day. Did you suddenly wake up or are you still in a dream? Perhaps the sounds will take you to a place of daydreaming. A movie soundtrack for your own inner film.
An other reference to the title is, that this is the hour of the day, where human activities are at a minimum. Surroundings are cast in darkness, but where will be a residue from human-made sources or the faint light from nature. And if you look up you will see a starlit sky or the white smoke from the nearby power plant. So perhaps we are romantic realists?

As some of you might have noticed the whole Moving Furniture Records website has been redesigned. We are now using Wordpress, which makes it easier to post updates, and also easier to follow with RSS feeds.

Some future news:
Next month will see the light of a new release by a vibrant struggle, a collaboration between Steffan de Turck (Staplerfahrer) and Jan M-Iversen and Sindre Bjerga (from the amazing bjerga/iversen releases on Digitalis Foxglove and Time-Lag to name a few).
After that we will issue our first vinyl album, which will be by the amazing Ubeboet from Madrid, Spain. I hope to have more info and maybe some pre-order options soon. The pre-master is a gem, so looking forward to get the final issue at hands when it is completely done.


Orphax
Also with Orphax there is some upcoming material. I will be doing a split LP with my friend Steffan de Turck aka Staplerfahrer. We are both working on some new pieces. When this will be out isn't known yet, but keep your eyes open on the new and improved Orphax website: http://www.oprhax.com

On March 20th I will be giving a live performance in Tilburg at Zwijsenpand together with chefkirk and Paddo One Obie One organized by Vatican-Analog. This will be an evening full of experimental sounds from soft psychedelic drones to harsh walls of noise.

Zonderland
Not long after this performance together with Zonderland we will be doing one or two performances in Maastricht again. This time the place to be is Krakks. First performance will be on Wednesday March 31st and the second will be Sunday April 4th (Easter Sunday). On the Sunday there will be a special auction including some exclusive limited to one releases with handmade artwork (from wood, paper and much more) containing recordings we did over the past few years in our practice room. As soon as these have all been made you can check the pictures at http://www.zonderland.org.

Moving Furniture Records

On Tuesday 27th the first CD-R release of Kansas based musician H Stewart got released.
As a homage to her late Grandmother Dora Elizabeth she wrote an album about her life from birth to death. A true story of love and pain.
The following words have been written by Larry Johnson describing the album greatly:

H Stewart - Dora Elizabeth

The passing of a close relative is one of life’s unfortunate, but certain to occur, events. This is even more true if that loved one served the roles of friend, comforter, teacher, and was also a source refuge and unconditional love. Such individuals are never really forgotten, because the essence of their being is forever embedded in our mind. The things that they did and said – the things that shaped our lives and inspired us - endure. Nor are thoughts about them ever absent from our minds or long. A certain odor or sound or even the slant of sunlight at a particular time of day or season might summon some recollection or fond memory of the person.

Dora Elizabeth is a milestone for H Stewart in two respects. Most important, the album serves as a tribute and memorial to her maternal Grandmother. From the composer’s heart to the listener, this is a musical story of Dora Elizabeth’s life. To quote H Stewart:

There are those of us lucky enough to have encountered the gods of our own time, the people who helped create and shape us into what we are and what we give the world. I was but clay in her loving hands. Let us all take this opportunity to ensure that she and all of those who have shaped us never really die.

She sums it all up quite nicely with these poetic words: “all the good things about me are her fault.”

Dora Elizabeth lived some 87 years enjoying life in general but also taking in stride all of the tribulations that such a long lifespan brings. “Comprehending Sunrise” celebrates her birth while “A Ballad for the Lost “and “The Dirt Road” chronicle the hard times of the Great Depression. The “Elk’s Lodge” memorialises a decade long courtship and eventual uniting of Dora Elizabeth and H Stewart’s grandfather. They were married at an Elk’s lodge in Arkansas. The track “Her Love” has a significance spanning the entirety of Dora Elizabeth’s life, while “Cancer” marks the final stage of the story, a beautiful lamentation that brings Dora Elizabeth’s life to a poignant close. The hazy ambiance and reverberating vocals of “Ever After” provide for aural metaphor of a surreal conversation from beyond the grave and track makes for a fitting conclusion to the album.

In addition to being H Stewart’s first physical release, Dora Elizabeth marks an important departure in style from previous netlabel releases on Clinical Archives, Frigida Records, and Test Tube being her first serious venture into instrumentation and is certainly her most musical release to date. Created on a Casio with the assistance bass player and sound engineer Robert Herrmann II, the majority of the tracks are instrumental, but her sweet, haunting vocals are still present, and especially notable is the heart-rending “Her Love”. The tracks were recorded and layered before being processed electronically.

No specific genre does justice in describing Dora Elizabeth in its entirety. Experimental in general, Dora Elizabeth blends elements of traditional musical samples and structures with the highly atypical. In listening again to her prior works, it’s clear that H Stewart is not afraid of testing the boundaries of experimental music and pushing into new territory. Dora Elizabeth takes her and the listener another step further. I’m sure that Dora Elizabeth is pleased.

Two weeks I had a live performance together with The Julie Mittens and Cave at the OCCII in Amsterdam. I didn't mail about it because everything got arrange at really short notice. Though, I can tell it was an amazing evening. It was probably my loudest, most intense set so far. Layers of field recordings with vocal drones and electric razors building up to a massive psychedelic climax. It got recorded but I don't have to recordings yet so don't know what will happen with these.
But for those who missed out on it and can't wait to hear it next Friday I am playing a similar set in Eindhoven.

Broadcasting on Ghost Frequencies is an album you really don't want to miss out on; inspired by the Ganzfeld Procedure where the participant is deprived of visual stimulus and bombarded with white/pink noise drawing the mind to form patterns in the chaos often hearing voices from the past or inventing entirely new constructs within their consciousness, this release pays tribute to the parapsychological mind and its many wonders.

Erstlaub is the creation of Dave Fyans of Perth, Scotland. Dealing in brooding drones and dense atmospheric soundscapes. He draws his inspiration from both man-made and natural sounds from real life and deconstructs and rebuilds them in his own stark vision by means of modular synthesis.

Christopher McFall had to say the following himself about this album:
'Red Is The Color of Price by Relation' was composed from the late summer of 2008 until late December of 2008. Given this, it's some of my most recent material. I feel that this is a difficult series of works for me to put into context, honestly. There were so many revisions at hand with these pieces and the works didn't really begin to assume a finalized format until late November. Additionally, I had thought about quitting altogether due to health problems related to my hearing and due to the emotional fallout associated with the resurfacing of an old lover of 5 years past, hence the pieces titled 'My Teeth' and 'Her Teeth' sprung into existence. The works are the product of manipulations involving piano and 2 broken phonographs. There's a few field recordings of birds that frequent the East Crossroads of Kansas City mixed in also.

The first album is Kapotte Muziek By Five Elements Music.



The Dutch duo of Frans de Waard and Roel Meelkop traveled all the way to St. Petersburg, Russia in May 2008, where they did some live performances as Kapotte Muziek. From these performances one has been reworked by the Russian sound/drone artist [ S ] who also works under the name Five Elements Music. The result is an amazing piece combining field recordings with metal scrapping and oozing drones.

VPRO Dwars Radio Show
As I wrote in previous newsletters we did some recordings for the radio show Dwars from the VPRO. Now after a few months the recordings have made it online.

We did some massive weird improvised stuff combining Post-Rock elements with "Free Music" (boundary's are not really our thing).
On October 23th and 30th this will also be broadcast on the Dutch radio (Radio 6). Later on there will also be a show with an interview I did for the same show.

Moroi
In September we did 5 live performances at a theater in Maastricht. Together with an actress, two dancers and a creator we did 5 different performances all in with the theme of industrial rework of stones, cement and dust.
We got some great reactions.
Soon there will be a short film about this available.

Moving Furniture Records:

A New Label
Yes, it's finally true: I have started my own small record label.
Moving Furniture Records is my place to release music I enjoy listening to in small editions (100).
The first release that will come by the end of October is Five Elements Music - Kapotte Muziek by.
Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard were in St.-Petersburg for some live performances last spring. The recordings they did there as Kapotte Muziek have been reworked by Five Elements Music.

It has been a while since my last update. This has several reasons with as main reason me being busy with other things and as usual being lazy.
But now I got so much good things to tell you that I couldn't keep myself from posting again.

Some of you might be interested in hearing: on a personal level I am doing really well. I've had periods of sickness but at the moment I am all healthy and I am happy. Enjoying my life and the things around me. At my work I am doing very good. It's busy like hell, but in a good way.
Further, summer has started, though with the drastic changes in the weather daily you can't really call it like that, but just one more week of work and after that it's a small holiday to Hungary.

Good, enough about that, let's get to the point.

Very short summarized Orphax news:

I am looking for a label that releases ambient and drone music for my release "De Tragedie van een Liedjesschrijver Zonder Woorden". If you have any ideas they are welcome ;) It's about time this found a proper home.

I've got two gigs coming up, one is at a private wedding party of friends of mine in Hungary. This will be with my birthday (August 2nd).
The second one is more public at the free festival Zomeravonden in Maastricht. This will be on Thursday August 14th together with my friend Wouter van Veldhoven who will play just before me. The venue is an old factory that has been transformed to a theater. More info will be available soon at http://www.ainsi.nl and http://www.zomeravonden.nl.

Zonderland news (less summarized)

The last few months we haven't been quiet with Zonderland.
June 28th we recorded a live session for the program Zeldzaam Dwars that will be broadcast at VPRO Radio in September. For those who are not familiar with this program: it are the same guys who do all the recordings for the Mort Aux Vaches series on Staaplaat.
The show will be broadcast in 2 sessions on radio and on internet in September. It will include a short interview (in Dutch) and loads of music. For more info on the program and other live session check http://www.vpro.nl/programma/dwars/. You will get an update when our set is available for stream.

Not only did we record for VPRO. We also did some recordings of our Sunday sessions at the practice studio in Den Bosch. We are now looking for a label who is interested in releasing some of these sessions. For now it's a total of 2 sets of improvisations: Studio Works One and Studio Works Two. We have several performances in the pipeline

On August 16th we will be performing with Staplerfahrer at the festival Zomeravonden, which we also have curated.
The whole festival will take place from August 13th to 17th starting daily at 16:30 (if I am not mistaking). There will be theater, dance, art exhibitions and so much more. Every evening there will be live music

After this performance there will be loads of practice for our biggest project so far:
Moroi
On September 12, 13, 16 & 17 we will do performances with 2 dancers and 1 actress combined with art installations from a young actress from Maastricht. This promises to become one huge multimedia event with our music, Japanese improvised dance (Butoh), theatre, film and more.
Again we will do this at the AINSI Theater in Maastricht.
