On April 13th 2013, the North of The Wall Festival – a one day festival celebrating Scottish metal - descended on Scotland to wreck havoc on Glasgow. Headlined NWOBHM band Holocaust and with performances from blood metallers Achren, black metallers Maelstrom, doom metallers Headless Kross and folk/black metal band Norderobring, among others, it was always going to be brutal. MetalRecusants’ Stuart Cole was there to capture the action as it unfolded.

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/05/02/north-of-the-wall-festival-glasgow-uk-13th-april-2013-photo-report-by-stuart-cole/

I listened to Just Before Dawn‘s full-length debut, Precis Innan Gryningen, and I loved it (reviewed here). I loved it so much that I wanted to enter the frontman’s mind and analyze his inner thoughts. By that I mean I just wrote up some questions and had them e-mailed to him. In this interview, we learn about the band’s production process and how exactly they managed to get Rick Rozz to appear on the album, among other things.

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/04/28/just-before-dawn-premiere-new-track-and-leader-anders-biazzi-drops-a-few-messages-interview-exclusive/

Intronaut, for those unfamiliar with their work, have been kicking around for a long time. Having toured with the likes of Tool, Meshuggah and Animals as Leaders, the Los Angeles based group have a very polished and refined sound to show on this latest release. It combines elements of more avant-guarde doom metal with jazz and more traditional Latin and African polyrhythms, even mixing in some psychedelic influences at points

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/04/19/release-review-intronaut-habitual-levitations/

I don’t know what I can really say about this album. It’s far from bad – in fact at times is superb, combining interesting syncopated riffs with effortless transitions into low-strung clean sections that break up the songs incredibly well. Every song on the album is solid, there’s no filler and it feels very together when viewed as an album as a whole

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/04/18/release-review-chosen-resolution/

Thursday night’s co-headlining DevilDriver and Cannibal Corpse gig at London’s HMV Forum got off to a dismal start for me. With different sources giving different opening times for the venue, I – along with many others – ended up missing opening band Hour of Penance, a band I’ve been assured are not to be missed live. My bad mood was further heightened when I paid near £5 for what was undoubtedly the most watered down Jack Daniels I’ve ever drunk. Annoyed? Yes! But what better way to vent that than at a death metal gig!

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/03/09/live-report-cannibal-corpse-devildriver-hmv-forum-london-7th-march/

At the end of January 2013 Riverside released a landmark album. It is probably the most lucid and atmospheric piece of progski. The sound space has an impressive size. It recalls the slow moving crowd of zombies from the Celebrity Touch video. There was only one album that made me so proud of Polish music production.

http://metalrecusants.com/2013/03/07/release-review-riverside-shrine-of-new-generation-slaves/
