We've been quite busy these days and some of you may have heard that Comet Gain was about to release a song through a new label in Spain. Well, that single is out, is beatiful, called The Weekend Dreams and is a very limited edition 7" vynil. A pop gem the way they used to be.

For this occasion we paired (as we do, it's the philosophy of our label) with Spanish Noisy-Rrriot Girls Hello Cuca whom offered us an unbelievable song called 'El camión de la basura' with some help of Genís Segarra (Astrud/Hidrogenesse).

For everyone interested on the release we have copies in Rough Trade, Pure Groove, our website (Doble Vida Discos) and soon through What's Your Rupture?

I started writing for a spanish webzine (www.kulturaurbana.com) recently, and the first thing to do was an interview to The Would-be-goods. It was a fast mail interview so i know it is short, but there's some interesting things.


How do you feel about being part of Matinée Recordings and collaborating with Elefant, two labels that still taking care for the more “sixties” pop?

Well we think those are two labels with a strong sense of their own taste and style, run by people who are doing it for the love of music. So we are glad to be associated with them. All the members of the Would-be-goods like the sixties, but I think we all disagree about which parts of the sixties we like!


From “The Camera Loves Me” to “Mondo”, you took a break for eleven years, and suddenly you released records on 2002 and 2004, how long we will have to wait for a new Would-be-goods album? Are you working on something new?

We have been recording this winter, and have eight new songs just about finished. But that isn’t enough for an album. Probably we shall have enough songs by the summer. But we don’t want to release records until we are sure we have something really good to release.


For the last two years it seems that everyone is looking to England for a lot of new young bands, the so-called British Invasion, but still appearing new bands as Math and Physics Club or Saturday Looks Good To Me that seems to follow your path, what is your opinion about it?

Peter is probably the only member of the Would-be-goods who tries to keep up with what young people are doing. He does think that this is a good time for British musics. He also likes the Math and Physics Club, but has never heard of Saturday Looks Good To Me. We all listen mainly to old records, but if it is true that some new bands are doing similar things to us, we are very pleased about that. We would like some company, and some good bands to play with.


Do you think that the sixties pop has an opportunity to become more popular or it always was supposed to be underground?

I think the sixties have always been popular. I believe people realized thirty years ago that the sixties were some kind of high point of youth culture, and things would never again feel as new and as open as they did then. Some groups will probably remain cult tastes, but most good British and American music from the sixties have been rediscovered, reissued on CD, etc. However, people in Britain and America tend not to know very much about sixties music from Europe, so they have a lot to discover there. Luis from Elefant did me a tape of excellent Spanish pop music from the sixties which I think is completely unknown in Britain. I would really like to see some good compilations of that music.


Even though you have been the inspiration for many of these bands, The Would-be-goods looks always as the “pop gem to discover”. Was it easier to be not so popular? Did you felt less pressure than other bands?

I think it is very hard for bands to get really successful unless they try really hard at it. You have to really work hard at promoting your music. We have generally been content to let people discover us, and we have been too busy with other things to devote ourselves to music full-time. If you do devote yourselves to music full-time, the risk of disappointment is greater. However, we do very much like making records and playing concerts, and we hope we might make ourselves a bit more popular!


Seems that many pop bands have considered that getting older means to become a little more “boring” (except for Belle and Sebastian that try to look younger every day) but when you released “Brief Lives” you were already, and sorry for it, older than them and you still sounding fresh, are you thinking on changing some day or you don’t think that age has to be boring?

When you get to our age you realize that young people can be just as boring as old people.


You never considered The Would-be-goods as a sort of Indie Combo, how was the task of being a leader for all of them?

It is nice of you to say we were leaders, but we weren’t. If the Would-be-goods managed to inspire some other bands, that is something to be proud of. Of course they don’t usually turn out the way you want them to!

migala: maybe one of the best known abroad for his stoner- post rock.

remate: acid folk on the same wave as Devendra banhart or nick drake. Sings in english

the secret society: if you ever liked elliott smith you will like it. Only english

el niño gusano: indie rock chaotic, like Neutral Milk Hotel or The Unicorns

la buena vida: chamber pop. Their last three cd's "hallellujah", "harmonica" and "album" are full of good melodies.

delorean: post-funk! (any more reason?)

it's not not: some of the emo's band Standstill formed this post-funk group
