so i was psyched about seeing these guys live, 'cos i hadn't and've heard so much about how great these guys were live...i was kinda over their first album, though, but i liked what i had heard off their new album, so there.
we (a friend and i) got there kinda early (3 something) and stood/sat/stood in line for what felt like forever. Luckily my friend was armed with his ipod (packed with television shows and music videos, probably for occasions such as these). at first, this "sitting/standing in line too early" thing sounded like a pain in the ass, but it turned out to be totally worth it, as my friend suddenly said: "holy crap. that's alex turner." he quickly searched his bag for their new album (we had been to amoeba earlier) and skipped on over to alex, whilst reaching into his pocket for his phone. i followed, a bit more in awe than he was. i shook matt helders' hand, and stood there (looking starstruck, i guess). it was weird. ordinarily, i'd have, like, three sharpies, but this day i only had two pens that wouldn't write. that blew hard...
afterwards, we sat/stood some more, then they told everyone to take off their belts. i kept mine on some more. we made small talk with a couple of girls standing behind us. at some point, the girls helped me realize the pass i had was only for one, so they got my friend in. that was really nice of them. then the line began to move. they checked my bag, ran the metal detector o'er me, and we walked in.
the place was smaller than i thought it'd be. we got to stand in the second row, fairly close to the stage (which sucks considering we were among the very few that arrived early, but it wasn't so bad).
later, they began to screen jimmy kimmel behind the drum kit and a couple of speakers (the view wasn't so great, but it wasn't too bad). the commercial break seemed like forever, probably 'cos they didn't screen any commercials... everybody booed when that american idol asshole came on, which was funny...
eventually, some (not too) generously proportioned bald guy come on stage talking into a microphone about something. then the arctic monkeys came on stage (everyone cheered) and stood facing away from the crowd for a bit, then they got into their playing positions. the guy with the microphone on-stage said something and pointed to the back, then i heard jimmy said something.
they kicked off the set with "Brianstorm". then they played old yellow brick. once that was over, they played quite the set with songs including, but not limited to: "Leave Before The Lights Come On," "Flourescent Adolescent," and "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor."
