How would your friends describe you?: Just like a wall, yup, just like that. Are you generous?: Pandora's Aquarium, by which i suppose you mean I've a whole lotta snares, illusions & insanity locked up in a box AND I'm willing to share them.

your car: Second Intermission. Perhaps this is because I'll only get to own one in a fictionalized, staged version of my life.
waking up early in the morning: Venus. This song does paint the sort of early morning I'd like to wake up to. But it is so delusionally far from the truth, it's ridiculous.

Fri 13 Jul – Tori Amos

I’ve been putting this off for a whole week. Not procrastinating this time, I swear. Just trying to let the dust settle, trying to be a bit more detached, a smidge more levelheaded about it. A little less freaky-fangirl-ish.

The first day after the concert I just couldn’t bring myself to speak about it. Friends asked me how it was and I just nodded and gave them the thumbs up. Then I saw the flickr pics. The youtube vids. The blog posts. And then came the ultimate account. The mother of all reviews and, more importantly, of all Tori experiences. I read it, got even more emotional (and substantially more self-deprecating for not having attended the M&G, although I had promised myself I would). And I realized I would never be able to write a Tori-story and pass it off as a review.

But I decided to write this anyway, write it for inconsequential, sentimental reasons. Such as the fact that this was one of the more impressive things that have happened to me. Ever. Or at least in recent times.

So let us get the trite details out of the way and pretend to make like a legit reviewer. First off: I don’t give a rat’s ass about the endless debates over the quality of the sound. I, for one, was a bit busy focusing on the brilliance of the band and on Tori’s whispering, screaming and moaning. I saw her and Bosey up there, live, no second-hand deal and, well, that was what I had bargained for.
More of the same: I really, honest-to-god, did not mind the lighting. I was expecting a plunge into the tacky, somewhat aggressive side of live performances. After all, this is the Dolls’ tour, isn’t it?
Next billed on the list of grievances: Tori was almost an hour late. It’s not because we’re a tiny, middle-of-nowhere, godforsaken country. It’s not out of a lack of respect. It’s just the way it goes. Big names are late. Attend more concerts. Deal with it.
What else: I don’t think the crowd was dead at all. True, they did seem livelier on youtube than they did when I was sharing a room with them, but, in all honesty, after having heard (of) the hilariously infamous Bratislava incident, I was too scared to even stand up in the beginning of the show.
And, oh yeah: who gives a flying fuck about how many beemers were parked outside Sala Polivalenta?

I do have my fair share of regrets, of which missing the surreally perfect M&G is by far the biggest one. A close second would be the ban on rushing the stage, which was not lifted before the encores. Then, there’s the whole setlist claptrap. “Oh, why didn’t she play that”, “Oh, but I was really hoping she’d do this, she played it in Prague!”, “Oh, the Bucharest version of that song was so reminiscent of her earlier, more raw performances…” I’m not going to go down that murky and bitchy road. I think that, all in all, for a first performance in an Eastern European, stuck-in-a-fold-of-the-map kind of city, the setlist was well balanced and made for an engaging show. I’m very happy we got Pip, the edgier of the Dolls and my personal favorite (almost in spite of her uncannily Christina Aguilera-like outfit; or maybe that’s just in my sick head). I’ll admit to having expected her to do Cloud on My Tongue and Happy Phantom. I’ll also confess to having secretly prayed for Blood Roses, as well as more of From the Choirgirl Hotel, although I knew the American Doll gigs so far had been sprinkled with lots of Under the Pink and less Choirgirl. In the end, we got our fair share of Boys for Pele and, predictably enough, no Raspberry Swirl or Hotel to answer my prayers to the Tori fairy. I kind of knew it for a fact that she wouldn’t play my all-time fave, Spark. I don’t think she plays it in concert anymore, seeing as it deals with such a traumatic experience. Beyond my own emotional associations for it, I acknowledge the sort of tragic, Me and a Gun-like vein running through it and I can cope with just looping it obsessively on my iPod.

My single pet-peeve regarding July 13th, Sala Polivalenta, Bucharest, actually has a lot less to do with the concert itself than it does with the ensuing reactions. I think it’s pretty sad to attend a concert billed under the American Doll Posse heading without so much as having bothered to illegally download the eponymous album beforehand (not that I condone such behavior… ahem.) Why go to a concert, which you eventually deem as enjoyable, but say that the first act did not move you at all, just because you didn’t recognize any of the songs played? Of course, I know the commonsensical answer. There are enough Tori’s around to cater to everyone’s taste (which, ironically, is the whole concept behind the American Doll Posse album and tour). However, I can’t help feeling disappointed by that, as well as by the fact that few people have bothered to mention her brilliant improv, which spoke directly to us, her Romanian audience and our Communist legacy. The “I have walked your streets, I respect you, I wish I were as brave as you are” bit. I bet you weren’t moved by that unfamiliar song either, were you?

Like anything you’ve been overexposed to, by design or by default, Tori Amos is surreal. Like walking into an actual British mansion, set among impossibly green fields. Like being in such close proximity of a classical sculpture that you can reach out and touch it. Like seeing someone who’s influenced your emotional evolution in so many ways performing right there, right in front of you, a couple meters away - surreal. I cried at the concert, in spite of common decency, in spite of my instinct of emotional preservation, in spite of having been forewarned that Tori audiences are the best customers that Kleenex could ever dream of. I didn’t cry because of some overwhelming torrent of memories. Or because of some inextricable sense of joy. Or because of some ineffable undertow of sadness. That, right there is cliché and it’s bullshit. And we don’t want any of it. I cried because I was numb and in awe and she was right there, Tori Amos, playing all those songs I’d played to myself, inside out, for years. I have no recollection of her playing Cornflake Girl on that shitty stage at Sala Polivalenta, I spaced out then and wasn’t able to focus. But the muted rush I got in that moment is one which I don’t think I could have gotten from any other artist or from any other concert experience.

4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button

Opening Credits:
Twentieth Century Fox. Hah, we're off to a good start. Am I driving down Sunset? Is this gonna be a romcom?

Waking Up:
Everywhere. Oh, no, wait, I'm waking up to a depressing song. So my life's not a romcom. I knew it.

First Day At School:
The Yellow Ones. So I'm guessing in this scene my parents forget to pick me up from school ("I feel my head going down again")

Falling In Love:
Lizzie's Balloon. Nice. Smooth, sexy lounge song. Goodie.

Fight Song:
Bare Necessities. Lol, who am I fighting with, Balloo?

Breaking Up:
To Ulrike M. This actually fits a break up scene. Hmmmm. A break up followed by binge drinking in various pubs, but, hey, that's not so bad.

Prom:
Lyla. To my mind, this song's awfully fucked up, in spite of the pretty, breezy sound. So, yeah. That's the prom right there.

Life's OK:
I Want Wind to Blow. Wow, life is so NOT ok with this song. Or, at the very least, it's Prozac-induced ok :p. Great song, though.

Mental Breakdown:
Pissing In The Wind I'm guessing my mental breakdown will be followed by more binge drinking. Yay. But this one kinda fits, too.

Driving:
Blacklisted. Yup, driving at night, possibly off a cliff. Or through the crack addicts' part of town. Yet another gorgeous song.

Flashback:
Give Me It. So, what am I flashing back to here? Mental breakdown? Domestic violence? More binge drinking :))?

Getting Back Together:
Failure "Failure is always the best way to learn." Yeah. Good song for a get-together.

Wedding:
Ghosts in the Radio. A horrible disaster kind of a wedding, where a huge whipped cream fight breaks out. Hmmm. That's actually not a bad idea for a wedding.

Getting pounded:
Get a Move On I'm guessing in this scene I'm being pounded by several Mafia hitmen crossbred with some snazzy clubgirls. Cool.

Birth of Child:
Carmen Queasy. Because I'm giving birth to Damien, spawn of the Beast :D

Final Battle:
Should I Stay or Should I Go :)) this speaks for itself

Death Scene:
Katyusha Lovely. I'm getting executed by the Red Army firing squad. Lovely. Couldn't have wished for a better way to go.

Funeral Song:
Les Fleurs Love & joy & peace & harmony & flowers. Everybody's holding hands & dancing on my grave, gospel-style. Beautiful :D.

Here's the deal. For the past three years I've been working with the amateur drama group of my former high school. Everything is a pretty enthusiastic collaborative effort, from writing the script to stage direction to light and sound design. I'm mostly involved in the writing bit, what with me actually writing scripts for a living & basically, just 'cuz I love writing and working with the guys in the group.

This year we decided to write a play about blogs, the freedom we get in relationships & the spells cast by fascinating people :) So we tossed some ideas around, then I went and wrote the thing & in January we're gonna go into rehearsals, so that we're ready with everything by mid April, when we're attending a national theater festival.

What we need help with is putting the soundtrack together. I've already come up with a list of possible tracks to include & with a general concept for the soundtrack as a whole. Basically, we're looking for songs/voices that will help build up a sexually charged/slightly twisted kind of atmosphere. Also, we're specifically looking for unusual female voices, since our main character is, well, an unusual female. Here's what we've come up with so far:

Nicotine
She Cries Your Name
Raspberry Swirl

Obviously, we're not gonna use all these songs in the play, 'cuz then we'd just be making one huge staged music video. But I've listed all of them here to better illustrate the kind of thing we're looking for. In a nutshell, dramatic, female-driven alternative songs that spell sex. :) Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanx.

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by number 5?
Wow, I can't really remember. I think it was Razna, some six years ago. Some of my class mates in high school were huge fans and I just hated the band.

What Is Your Favorite Album of Number 2?
Very, very tough call. I think Without You I'm Nothing is very good, but a bit overrated. I really like the raw sound & energy of Placebo, but I guess my favorite one is actually Black Market Music, because of the lyrical content.

What is your favorite lyric that number 6 has sung?
"One morning, one morning
One morning in May
I saw this young lady
All wrapped in white linen
All wrapped in white linen
And call out the plague"
When I Was a Young Girl

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Funny. Have I mentioned I live in the middle of nowhere?

What is your favorite song by number 7?
Definitely One Beat & I also really like Wilderness.

What is a good memory you have considering the music of number 10?
Ermmm, well, two years ago when we used some of the tracks on the Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain album on the soundtrack of a high school play I put together with some friends.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
Not really, basically they all more or less make me happy in a weird, quirky totally Joanna Newsom-ish way.

What is your favorite lyric that number 2 has sung?
"Cue to your face so forsaken
Crushed by the way that you cry"
from Summer's Gone
and basically all the lyrics to This Picture. And sooooo many more.

What is your favorite song by number 9?
I love so many of them. Pagan Poetry, Bachelorette and Joga, to name a few.

How did you get into number 3?
Actually, I discovered her here on last.fm. I would hereby like to thank my family, the Academy and all the little people that made this possible.

What was the first song you heard by number 1?
I think it was This Is Love, some 5 or 6 years ago, on Mtv & I hated it, because the video freaked me out :p. I currently think it's a brilliant song, of course.

What is your favorite song by number 4?
Definitely Pale Blue Sky.

How many times have you seen 9 live?
I wish. Does seeing her concerts on tv count? Didn't think so.

What is a good memory you have concerning 2?
Predictably enough, I mostly relate Placebo with sad or at least very emotional times. I guess my best memory concerning them is having seen them live in Bucharest this August.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
This band makes me anything but sad. They make me jumpy, feisty, happy or infuriatingly hyper, but not sad.

What is your favorite album of 5?
Mainile Sus. They tend to be pretty inconstant when it comes to album standards, but here's one which I can listen from beginning to end without skipping more than one track.

What is your favorite lyric that 1 has sung?
"Catherine de Bara
You murdered my thinking
I gave you my heart,
You left the thing stinking
I'd shake from your spell
If it weren't for my drinking
The wind bites more bitter
With each light of morning"
Catherine

What is your favorite song of 3?
Peach, Plum, Pear, without a doubt. I could listen to that song on and on and ON for days on end.

What is your favorite song of 10?
La Noyee, although I also really like Rue des cascades, J'y suis jamais alle and Pas si simple.

How many times have you seen 8 live?
Enough with the sadistic questions, already!

What is your favorite album of number 1?
Clearly, Is This Desire?. One of the very very few albums that I can listen to without so much as thinking of skipping a single track.

What is a great memory you have concerning number 3?
I only just discovered her, so I don't really have one yet, but I'll make sure to make one and then post about it.

Here's the deal: Take every letter of the alphabet and put down the best group/performer (in your opinion) that starts with each letter. For names, go by the first name, not the last (however "the" doesn't count. Meaning, The Beatles would fall under B).
