There is - I believe - a universal difficulty in making a choice.

The agony of selecting just 8 tracks from the many millions of songs that exist is a perfect example. (The Gracenote Media Database has over 100 million tracks). My music collection consists of only 15,000 songs - but it took me 2 weeks to whittle it down to 8.

But it's not just songs. Some people have a problem with shoes. I remember spending a whole day with my mother-in-law trawling from shoe-shop to shoe-shop and back again to buy just one pair. A different agony for us both.

Today's world bombards us with a plethora of choice, and the bloody interweb doesn't help much, does it?

But isn't that the classic paradox? We are told that we desire choice in everything, and politicians win our votes by promising us choice (e.g. schools, doctors etc.).

But we hate choice! We can't do it. We shy away from it. But when we do make a choice, we immediately regret it, because ... the grass is always greener elsewhere.
Very often I have chosen food at a restaurant by thinking of a number beforehand, and choosing that item on the menu. That way I get to avoid the agony, and sometimes end up with something unexpectedly gorgeous. Similarly, I chose to buy Biffy Clyro's "Vertigo of Bliss" purely by the front cover. (Hmmmm)

Indeed, the philosopher Malcolm Gladwell in his book "Blink" said that our best decisions are made intuitively, in the blink of an eye, not rationally. On the other hand Ben Newell's research "Think, Blink, or Sleep on it" suggests the opposite.

The Existentialist view is that we encounter the true self in the involvement and agony of choice and in the pathos of commitment to our choice.

So the process of making that choice is good for the soul. It might even make you a better person.

But - just in case - there is a second island, where we can choose the tracks we missed for the first island.

But there is one thing I can't work out. Does a second island increase the agony of choice, or does it make it better?

Do we need a third island?

Or are we just suffering under the illusion that we think this choice is important?
