The "Sick Kids" Story

As you may already know, Weerd Science began production on his second full length album in 2007. It was announced on myspace by photos of Josh and Wavis being posted from Kingston, NY’s Darkworld Studio. A few weeks later we got our first taste of the record with “Dear S.A.M., I’m Dead To You” (it was our Thanksgiving present). At the end of the year, UK’s Rock Sound magazine wrote up Sick Kids as an album to look out for in 2008. February 2008 we got a fun in-studio video (Germs???). Around springtime Wavis announced that Sick Kids was moving to Woodstock’s Applehead Recording and Production to begin mixing.

“FaNB was made up of tracks written and recorded at different times and then put together to make an album. SiKi is the 1st time WS went into the studio to make a record from start to finish making the record more cohesive. SiKi will be Weerd Science truly realized!!!” -Wavis

We got our second taste of Sick Kids in an Applehead in-studio video (Rape Kit) that was posted in June 2008. Later that month a song titled “Fuck All People” was posted. Then… nothing- aside from a show in Buffalo, NY on September 11, 2008 (where WS and his Super Posse of Awesomeness debuted the song, “Zodiac”).

After forming his rock band, Mours, Josh explained in his myspace blog what the hold-up was.

”I’ll begin by thanking you all for the support and apologizing for not droppin this album in 2008. 2008 was a fucked up year. While there were some bright spots (Tammy and Maggie), truth be told the bad far outweighed the good. For starters- Me, Wavis, Dirty, and Kwame and a ton of others have worked diligently for hours on end in the creation and recording of Sick Kids. It would break my heart to think that the fans that have stuck with us thought we were just fuckin around doin whatever, but its funny cause thats the exact opposite of what we were doing. While 2008 was a year of serious downs, for the most part we kept our blinders on and kept tweaking and freaking over the smallest of details on Sick Kids. Sparing you all of the details right now, never has there been a more true example of art imitating life imitating art.” -Weerd Science (January 2009)

Mere days after Josh Eppard’s personal blog post, “The Clap” was posted on MySpace.

That April Mr. Weerd Science’s face was plastered on the front page of AMP Magazine’s website. In the interview that was up there Josh discussed his struggle with heroin, leaving Coheed and Cambria, the meaning of the album, and getting clean. Weerd Science also made a special appearance at Webster Underground in Hartford, CT and performed two songs. Few weeks later, a track list was unveiled.

Over the next couple of months headling shows in Hartford, Nyack, Philadelphia, Rochester, Virginia Beach, Allston, and Poughkeepsie followed. UnRapped performances of “Dear S.A.M.,” “The Clap,” and “Zodiac” with members of 3 were posted. Then in November 2009 Weerd Science and Wavis appeared on WCDB’s Local Hip Hop Takeover show and revealed that their dayjobs were: folding t-shirts at the MerchNow warehouse.

After opening for 3 in Woodstock, Weerd Science got quiet again. He joined the band Terrible Things with Fred Mascherino (ex- Taking Back Sunday, Breaking Pangaea) and Andy Jackson (ex- Hot Rod Circuit). All of 2010 was spent recording the debut album, touring, releasing the album, and touring more in support of it. Seriously, dude went across the country about 6 times in 2010. Terrible Things were constantly out on the road.

Now in 2011 we have a release date (May 17th), a DIY record label (Horris Records) backing the album, another new song (“Unloveable Loser” on AltPress.com), UK tour dates (The Melanin Challenged Tour with MC Lars and MC Chris[/artist), Warped Tour dates (Josh will be performing every date both as Weerd Science and with Terrible Things), and now- a preorder for this long-awaited album release.

Today was a pretty big day among the individuals of Weerd Science’s Super Posse of Awesomeness.

DJ Dirty Ern produced a new beat with MC Lars and Joe Oliger of NJ’s Flash Fire at Universal Record Group.

Dave Parker (Wavis) announced that he’s joined The City Never Sleeps on bass.

Anthony Masington digitally released The Flatline Symphony’s single “Cross The Vulture” (Ant is the vocalist) as well as his A Scream For The Memory EP, Pop! Goes the No-Wave (he performs everything).

A song I wrote was released to the world (“barebones” on Pop! Goes the No-Wave)… and I made an appointment to discuss my return to college after a 5 year hiatus.

Thus begins the fall season of 2010. What lies ahead? Who the fuck knows! If one thing’s for sure, it will be full of heartwork!

TERRIBLE THINGS release eponymous track – the journey so far

Fred Mascherino is rocking harder than ever these days. The accomplished musician is mostly known for his tenure in Taking Back Sunday from 2003-2007 as lead guitarist and co-vocalist while the band was at the height of their game (2004′s Where You Want To Be [Victory Records] debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts and Louder Now [Warner Bros. Records] earned the band all sorts of appearances- like one in an episode of Degrassi that was named after the first track of the record)… but Fred has been making music for far longer than that stint. He was in the Pennsylvanian band, Brody, from 1992-1999 and then in the trio Breaking Pangaea, which eventually got signed to EQUAL VISION RECORDS. In 2003 Fred saw the first release of a solo song, “Heading Back East,” under the moniker “Basic Design.”

It was included on Equal Vision Records’ sampler Inventing The Scene along with the first solo Claudio Sanchez release, The Prize Fighter Inferno song, “I’m Going to Kill You” (which was rereleased on the 2006 record, My Brother’s Blood Machine as “The Missing McCloud Boys”). Breaking Pangaea had just toured with TBS when he was recruited (much like Chris Pennie of The Dillinger Escape Plan, and now Coheed and Cambria). While in Taking Back Sunday, Fred never stopped writing. He eventually left the band due to creative differences and shifted his full musical focus to the pursuit of his solo project. He asked his fans which name they liked best: Fred Mascherino, Basic Design (which is also a name of a Brody song), or The Color Fred. In 2007 The Color Fred released Bend To Break on Equal Vision Records. He toured a bit by himself, had a backing band for a little while, and then toured by himself again.

Along the way The Color Fred shared the stage with Matchbook Romance, Dashboard Confessional, Craig Owens, Ace Enders, VersaEmerge, The All-American Rejects, City and Colour, Chiodos, Coheed and Cambria, MxPx, From First To Last, Protest the Hero, Meg & Dia, Angels & Airwaves, Mayday Parade, Four Year Strong, Hawthorne Heights, Emery, and performed at the bamboozle, give it a name, Warped Tour Festivals… September 2009 The Scene Aesthetic tour brought a solo The Color Fred to Off The Wagon in Alabama where he met Andy Jackson, who was working sound that night.

The two had never really spoke before, though they both appeared on Say Anything’s In Defense Of The Genre LP [J Records]. It was even widely rumored that Andy Jackson was going to fill the void in Taking Back Sunday when Fred left. But this chance encounter resulted in both men exchanging mutual appreciation for each other’s previous endeavors and expressing an aching desire to start something fresh.

Andy Jackson is most known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player in Hot Rod Circuit. HRC rocked the country for nearly a decade touring with such acts as The Get Up Kids,At the Drive-In, Jimmy Eat World, The New Amsterdams, Reggie And The Full Effect, Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, Straylight Run, Piebald, The Snake The Cross The Crown,New Found Glory, Paramore, Midtown, Further Seems Forever, The Starting Line, Rival Schools, Recover, Thrice, Hot Water Music, Limbeck, The Forecast, and their personal heroes- Superchunk.

Andy is constantly rocking out in some form or another. He’s been a live performer for Reggie and the Full Effect as well as Say Anything. Andy’s project, (with then-The New Amsterdams drummer, Jake Cardwell) Safety In Numbers, put out a few releases on Triple Crown Records (including a split EP with Brand New in 2001). Andy Jackson (who has a black belt in Kung Fu) also runs his own recording studio, The Jackalope Studio, in Montgomery. That’s where he recorded and produced Hot Rod Circuit’s final album, The Underground Is a Dying Breed. Andy also worked with The Escape Frame at Jackalope. Not quite in his studio, but in tour buses on the warped tour, Andy recorded vocals from Gerard Way,Adam Lazzara, Anthony Raneri, Anthony Green, Hayley Williams, Aaron Gillespie, Jordan Pundik, and Chad Gilbert for Say Anything’s In Defense of the Genre.

Hayley Williams also contributed her voice to a song for Andy’s most recent project (before Terrible Things) which appears in an acoustic version on Death In The Park‘s EP [END Sounds]. It was just announced a few days ago that the DITP LP will be available for digital download on August 24th. September 14th is the actual CD release date. Andy is also performing Death in the Park material solo acoustic at the AP tent on the 8 Warped Tour dates that Terrible Things are performing in 2010.

When Fred got home from that solo acoustic tour, he emailed Andy a few demos. As the story goes, Andy couldn’t even get through a full song before he shut it off to call Fred up. “I love it. As long as we’re writing songs like that, I want to be a part of this,” (AltPress.com Exclusive: Fred Mascherino and Andy Jackson introduce Initials) Andy told Fred. They were both ready to stretch out from the genres that have constricted their music. No matter what project either artist has pursued they have been branded, “emo,” despite Fred’s degree in jazz Performance. The bassist they initially connected with, Steve Lucarelli, has a love of jazz music like Fred. Also like Fred, Steve has yet to play in a jazzy band. Steve Lucarelli is known as the bassist of the self-proclaimed Blue-Collar-Metal band, Once Nothing [Solid State / CI Records]. Founding VersaEmerge drummer, Anthony Martone, also found he had great chemistry with Fred and Andy. In October 2009 the quartet announced their project, Initials.

Fred, Andy, Anthony and Steve played a handful of shows in the Northeast as Initials… 2 in October (The Note in West Chester, PA & Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn, NY) and 2 in November (The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, NY & 7 @ 7 in Cherry Hill, NJ). We didn’t hear from the group again until they posted a video on December 2nd, announcing that Josh Eppard was now part of the group.

“We’d been trying out a bunch of drummers looking for the right fit. We had some shows coming up and Anthony Martone took the time to do us a huge favor and learn the songs and play them with us. Since the lineup hadn’t been totally solidified yet, and Anthony had other projects coming up, we wanted to makes sure we were all committed to Initials, and that’s when Josh [Eppard] walked in and the chemistry was solid. Josh Eppard is most known for his drumming and songwriting (and back-up vocals) in the “new prog” genre-defining band, Coheed and Cambria. He first sat behind a drum kit when he was 11. Josh’s older brother, Joey Eppard, and their friend, Chris Bittner, were inspired to start a band… only, they needed a drummer. So with the help of dad (and seasoned musician), Jimmy Eppard, the boys set little Joshy behind a snare drum and high-hat. Legend is, Josh inherently kept good time.

After about a year of honing their skills in the basement the younglings gave themselves a name and began playing shows around Kingston and Woodstock, New York. They called themselves, 3.

In 1993 it seemed as if the trio hit their big break… Michael Lang, co-creator of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival, wanted to represent the band and give them a prime performance slot at the Woodstock 1994 Festival. Joey, Chris and Josh signed a contract with Lang along with Jimmy Eppard and Michael Birnbaum as co-managers of the teenagers. A movie was even made about them. Unfortunately, everything fell to shit. Their prime time-slot ended up being noon the first day of the festival and the movie never saw the light of day. Needless to say, they ended the contract and continued to write, grow, and perform.

In 1998 their efforts and creativity were about to pay off. 3 was picked up by universal records…. but amidst recording their debut, Universal went through a merger and dropped 75% of their acts and staff. The trio soldiered on, just trying to get their music heard. Eventually they crossed paths with Tom Benton, who personally funded the completion of their debut record and created a record label [Planet Noise Records] to get it out. 19 year old Josh, however, couldn’t escape the burning desire to play on as much music as he could. Against the advice and will of his family and friends, he left the band that turned him into a musician, and pursued a career in studio drumming. He was replaced in 3 by his mentor and local legend, Chris “Gartdrumm” Gartmann (of Peacebomb).

In the next 3 years Josh began to work with his friend, David Parker, who built a studio in his parents’ basement, but they didn’t form a rock band. Josh did get studio work at Applehead drumming for musicians such as R.A. the Rugged Man and Hesher, among others… but this project Josh was working on with his buddy, who he called “Wavis,” was hip-hop. Going by the name of Lil’ J, Josh spent a year putting together an album with Bobby Delicious and Wavis at the helm. They called it, Newborn, but the record remains unreleased.

In 2001 Josh’s favorite local band, Shabutie was having issues with their drummer, Nate Kelley. He immediately jumped at the chance to rock on stage again. The band changed their name to Coheed and Cambria, scored a record deal with Equal Vision, put together an album that included some reworkings of the Shabutie demos as well as a tune that featured a guitar solo by Dr. Know of hardcore-punk pioneers Bad Brains (Second Stage Turbine Blade) at Applehead (with Chris Bittner and Michael Birnbaum) and began performing in areas they hadn’t before. Breaking Pangaea brought Coheed and Cambria out on their first package tour. Josh with Coheed and Cambria, put out a platinum selling record, a gold selling record, and a gold selling DVD… a total of 3 albums and 2 DVDs. Mid 2006 Josh left as a result of creative constriction.

After taking some time off, Josh hooked up with Wavis to work on a Weerd Science LP. In 2005 Equal Vision put out a compilation of some of Josh’s rap songs that were recorded whenever he was home from tour with Coheed and Cambria, called Friends And Nervous Breakdowns. This time around the duo recorded a cohesive record featuring more live instrumentation and the story of Josh Eppard. Sick Kids has yet to see a release.

In 2008 Josh showed up at some of 3′s hometown shows (the band now signed to Metal Blade Records) and sat in for a few songs. One thing lead to another and eventually Josh joined up with his brother to put on a few Eppard Brothers shows. The first show was billed as just the duo, but they pulled all sorts of friends on stage. Chris Bittner, who had not performed since he left 3 in 2001, was pulled up as well and they had an impromptu “original 3″ reunion. Coheed and Cambria’s Mic Todd even sat in for a set at an Eppard Brothers show. Jimmy Eppard began to hold down the bass with his sons and eventually the group evolved into the trio, E-Males. According to Jimmy’s myspace, the E-Males recorded an album at Applehead with Chris Bittner and Mike Birnbaum. There’s no more information about that.

Josh also has a developing rock project with Wavis and Ant Masington (Session 606, singer of The Flatline Symphony). They posted 2 songs on the Mours myspace page in early 2009.

“Josh Eppard is my favorite drummer,” Fred gushes in just about every interview about the band. A strong supporter of Weerd Science, Fred made it out to the first Weerd Science tour date at The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA and mouthed every word out in the audience!

In early 2010 Initials recorded their debut full length at Synchromesh Studios in Birmingham with Jason Elgin. Some songs were written by Fred Mascherino prior to the formation of the project (such as “Revolution,” “Lullaby” which is originally a Breaking Pangaea song, “Terrible Things” which is a The Color Fred Song), some were written by Andy Jackson before he met Fred, and a few songs they wrote together. The previously written songs have been rewritten to reflect where the individuals are today as well as refer to the events that greatly inspired Fred. There were a series of about 50 house fires started in Fred’s hometown of Coatesville, Pennsylvania in January 2009. The band changed their name to avoid a lawsuit with another band of the same name. They were looking for other names, but couldn’t fight the feeling that the band name and the album name sum up the story perfectly. Terrible Things, oddly enough, are signed to Universal-Motown Records. The album art was done by Ryan Russell (who has also taken all of the band’s promotional photographs) and features Fred’s son and daughter. Terrible Things Terrible Things (mastered by Roger Lian) will be released August 31st, 2010. On April 17th Terrible Things put out a 7″ with demos of “The Hills of Birmingham” (which was the first tune they “initially” posted on myspace) and “Up At Night”. The band has released their first single, “Revolution” and have already been touring extensively… in a van… with only one other person (it’s Fred, Andy, Josh, bass player, sound guy/tech- Tom Martin). The “young” band has toured with Minus the Bear, Circa Survive, The Offspring, Story Of The Year, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, and have performed with Dashboard Confessional, Evolett, The Queen Killing Kings, 30 Seconds to Mars. July 19th the song, “Terrible Things” was revealed on Ragged. July 12th “Wrap Me Up” was exclusively posted on AbsolutePunk. July 6th “Lullaby” was exclusively posted on Alternative Press. June 28th Terrible Things posted “Up At Night” on their PureVolume page. April 26th “Revolution” was posted on MySpace and was released to iTunes and ShockHound on May 25th.

Several Fridays ago I learned one of Alternative Press Magazine’s “Bands You Need to Know in 2010” was playing a show in my local scene via @NFAW that night. While there is without a doubt a striving scene in Nyack, New York, not many touring bands roll through anymore. Soon as Nightmares for a week took the stage, back-up vocalist and bassist, Sean-Paul Pillsworth, informed the crowd that he and his bandmates had just come from a wake. Their close friend, Tim Williams, had just passed on. Though their hearts were heavy, the alternative folk/punk rock trio, tore the Indigo Paradise stage up! NFAW channeled their loss into an incredibly moving and extremely tight performance that won’t be forgotten.

The members of Nightmares For A Week will be reuniting with their former bands on Friday, June 18th, 2010 to remember their lost friend.

24 year-old Tim Williams was a loving and highly supportive music fan and technical drummer. He often offered to lend his gear out to other bands for studio and live use. Tim played in Arcadia ➔ Escalus, The Mast Year (they recorded 2 songs with Sean-Paul at Leaning Tree Studio before he was kicked out due to his chronic sickness), and he was amidst recording with The Media since the previous drummer (Steven Markotta) has become quite busy with Nightmares For A Week. The day of his passing, Tim was scheduled to record some more drums for The Media at Will Tendy’s studio.

It’s been about 8 years since Jerk Magnet has rocked the Hudson Valley. This very special cause is pulling them out of retirement for the night! Word is they’ll be performing their entire Seven Minutes in Heaven (John Naclerio / Chris Bittner) album with the original line-up (Sean-Paul, Bill Manley, Mike Cashen, Jay Longendyke, Justin Meyer) as well as handing out burned copies of the 2002 record. Another band had emerged from the ashes of the HV scene pop-punk staple, Anadivine. In 2003 they released the self-titled EP (featuring guest vocals from Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez - and a few songs about SPP’s friendship with Josh Eppard). 2004 saw the release of their full length, Zoo. Not too long after Anadivine seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth. Bill Manley and Sean-Paul were pursuing separate bands for the first time since, well… In 1998 they were in Least Likely to Succeed (LLTS) together. Then Jerk Magnet formed. After Anadivine Bill started The Median. Sean-Paul joined Divest, Counterfeit Disaster, formed Big town small town… As great as all the music produced from those projects are- the duo just weren’t as satisfied as they are now in Nightmares For A Week. May of 2008 the original Anadivine line-up reunited to rock out for one night at The Basement. The reflowing of chemistry sparked by the performance pulled Bill and Sean-Paul back together. With Steven Markotta (who’s 14th birthday party Jerk Magnet performed at) rounding off the group, the band chose a lyric from their mutual influence- Jawbreaker’s “Fireman” - to represent their formation. NFAW are currently in pre-production of their debut LP scheduled to commence production later this month in Nada Studio with John Naclerio.

Steven Markotta has played in a ton of bands (more than Sean-Paul and Bill, despite his age of 22), but the one project that had the largest impact on the Hudson Valley was the experimental, semi-psychedelic Astronauts. Word is their reunion will be somewhat of a hybrid, being as vocalist and pianist- Chris Bigley, has relocated to Portland, Oregon. Bassist- Simon Hegarty, guitarist- Corey Burleigh, guitarist- Jacob Daniel (The Ricochet) are to play through songs from their 3 releases… 2006 Wizards EP, 2007 split EP, 2008 Boneshaker Demo (recorded at Leaning Tree Studio).

Hudson Valley rockers from 2006-2008 Countess of Persia will also be reuniting to honor the memory of Tim Williams.

There were the music videos for “Devil In Jersey City,” “A Favor House Atlantic” and “Blood Red Summer.” There was also a documentary on the making of the “Blood Red Summer” video as well as two songs from the 2004 Skate and Surf Festival. Additionally there is an interview with Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever plus a stupidly hilarious interview with Mic Todd and Josh Eppard (who were snowed in at Applehead Studio in Woodstock, NY while recording the platinum record Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness). The DVD has since gone gold and features songs off the first two albums. The concert was presented by the now defunct New York City rock station, 92.3 K-Rock, and tickets were a mere 92 cents each. They sold out in a matter of minutes. Kill Radio and My Chemical Romance provided support for the September 20th, 2004 show, Coheed and Cambria’s first headlining show proceeding their first summer headlining the Vans Warped Tour. The Starland Ballroom is located in Sayreville, New Jersey. The DVD artwork was designed by renown graphic artist, Rob Dobi.

She toured with Meatloaf for nearly a decade and then toured with Mötley Crüe. Pearl’s vocals are featured on countless rock albums including Ace Frehley and Filter. As beautiful as Sheri Moon is, Scott Ian definitely beats out Rob Zombie in the hottest wife battle! Pearl’s debut record, Little Immaculate White Fox, was released January 19th, 2010. I was tossing and turning on my friend’s couch after a long night of chillin’ with 2 of my homies writing an “unloveable” song. Utilizing the light of the Christmas tree, I sat up with an 8 year old notebook and began writing something else, when I began to hear stirring about in the bedroom. Solemnly he emerged, in shock, explaining that he was just informed that a friend of his who’d called him last Christmas, who he’d extensively toured with years ago, was found dead in his Huntington Beach, California home. Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan was 28 years old. The Rev had just finished writing the 5th Avenged Sevenfold album with bandmate, M. Shadows (vocalist). During that process The Rev would frequently call his co-writer and tell him, “this shit is gonna change the world.” The two worked together in A7X their entire adult lives. Prior to the writing stage, M. Shadows told Loveline that the next record would be more classic metal and rock oriented (the self-titled was pretty experimental for the band who’s roots are in metalcore). He went on to say it would feature longer, more progressive songs and would be the “biggest Avenged Sevenfold record ever.” In that interview, M. Shadows also shared they were throwing around the idea of a concept record. A few months later (November 2009) Rhythm Guitarist, Zacky Vengeance posted on the A7X blog, “We will continue finalizing our songs until we feel every note does both you as well as us justice. We are also in the final stages of solidifying our production team, studios and engineers so that the second the axe falls and the album is written we will spend day and night in the studio until it is complete. This album will definitely take you on a very dark journey…” Prior to The Rev’s untimely passing, M. Shadows did an interview with Kerrang! Magazine (published December 31, 2009). Of their fifth studio effort he said, “It’s a dark record. The music is emotional. Our goal is to make every single part memorable, we want to evoke reactions live and at home. It’ll have big rock ballads, the big fun stuff, the piano, the choir, the orchestra and all the visual things you expect but with a different, moodier vibe. Lyrically, I’ve been inspired by everything from the ways kids are brought up nowadays, to schooling, the economy, religion, war and the behaviour of our government. It all plays into how kids are so emotionally detached from the real world right now.” It’s difficult to know how deeply involved The Rev was in the process just from reading that. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan gave more insight in an article published in the Huntington Beach Independent Newspaper. “Most important to him, Jimmy had just finished writing songs for Avenged Sevenfold’s new album — he even called one his ‘masterpiece.’ When he wrote songs, he would record tracks of his singing, playing the piano and drumming — then, when he played them for me, he would sing the orchestra or guitar parts that would be added later. I am thankful that I got to tell him how much I liked and admired his music.” Clearly more than just a drummer, The Rev left an enormous hole in his band (let alone the individuals’ hearts) having not completed tracking the final drum cuts for the A7X record he’d poured his soul into writing. Who better to fill the hole than Rev’s idol, the seemingly infallible, Mike Portnoy? February 17th, 2010 the band addressed their fans. I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy. -Avenged Sevenfold Mike Portnoy is mostly known for his impeccable drumming and ridiculous skill in the legendary progressive metal band, Dream Theater. Just about every year (for two decades now) he’s voted the best drummer in the world in Modern Drummer magazine. He also plays bass and sings back-ups. MP also produces both music and videos. Additionally he’s 1/4 of the mindblowing Liquid Tension Experiment along with the great stick-man, Tony Levin. In 2008 he founded the Progressive Nation tour to showcase some of his favorite international bands (Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, 3. 2009’s line-up included Zappa Plays Zappa, Pain of Salvation, Beardfish). Additionally, he’s a stand up guy. He addressed his fans the following day. Even under normal circumstances, I would’ve been happy to help the guys out in any way I could as I think Avenged Sevenfold are a great band…but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them…and I didn’t even have to think twice about saying yes. These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there’s a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make… I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy’s memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make. I want their fans to realize that I’m not trying to step into or fill The Rev’s shoes…I’m just merely lacing em up for him! They sound fucking amazing. Jimmy will be proud. Jimmy’s also smiling knowing that Mike Portnoy has a deathbat forever tattooed on him. To show Mike that A7X is deeper then just a band I got one to match his. Jimmy would have done the same. Mike realized that our fans and friends are considered family. Being an A7X fan isn’t always easy because it means you’re not only gonna laugh with us, but cry with us and defend us on occasion. If you’re part of the family it’s for life. Musically speaking, he never stopped progressing. He never stopped writing. September 22nd, 2007 Weerd Science performed the final show with the original live show line-up at The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Not long after, Josh returned to the studio atmosphere with co-creator, David “Wavis” Parker, to begin recording his Weerd Science record, “Sick Kids.” Early 2008 Josh Eppard rounded off the final line-up of Wavis’ brainchild, Counterfeit Disaster. With CD Josh recorded several unreleased songs and performed live with the band. Also during that time Josh reunited with his older brother for their first show together without 3. They played for hours, bringing up all sorts of musical friends to sit in. March 22, 2008 also marked the first reunion of the original 3 since Bittner’s Last Strand (June 2001). At the end of that summer, Josh’s former bandmate and longtime friend, Mic Todd, sat in for a set of Eppard Brothers material. The Eppard Brothers played a few more shows (around 10 in total). Josh became a session drummer again (working with a variety of artists including the late Jason Foster, Awkward Ending, Session 606) and lent his hand as a producer (to The Pride Awake). That winter Josh found himself at Darkworld Studio again, this time working on some rock tracks that in January 2009 developed into Mours. Spring 2009 the focus of Mours’ writers (Josh, David “Wavis” Parker, Anthony Masington) shifted to Weerd Science. “Sick Kids” was wrapped up and they began to play scattered shows around the Northeast (extending as far as Virginia Beach). This past summer Josh performed a gig with Tucson, AZ songstress Emily Long and the Eppard Brothers evolved into E-Males (Josh, Joey Eppard, Jimmy Eppard). At this very moment Josh Eppard is touring the United States with his newest band, Terrible Things. The band is also comprised of Fred Mascherino (The Color Fred, ex- Taking Back Sunday, Breaking Pangaea) and Andy Jackson (Death in the Park, ex- Hot Rod Circuit). My favorite young songwriter, Anthony Masington, is heading into Applehead Studio in a few weeks to lay down tracks for his Session 606 debut! This has been several years in the making, being as many of the songs began taking shape 5 years ago in his hometown of Trevose, Pennsylvania (in his basement). At the very end of 2008, asthmatic Ant bit the bullet- left everything he ever knew and relocated to Kingston, New York to work with producer and fellow musician David “Wavis” Parker (original Coheed and Cambria live keyboardist) on recording (t)his material. The two had sporadically worked together over the course of 2 years whenever Third Star Warrior could rack up enough dough to afford travel and studio time at Darkworld Studio. One fateful day after relocating while Ant and Wavis were working on “The Great Act of Failure”- Josh Eppard stopped by the studio and instantly fell in love with Anthony’s musicianship. Having been the house session drummer at that time, Josh sat behind his kit and tracked drums to the aforementioned song as well as “Exodus 8:25” and “Sound of Machines.” Their musical bond was so strong and deeply inspiring that as a result of this union… This rebirth… Wavis, Ant and Josh formed MOURS, putting all other projects on hold for about 4 months. Then the group’s focus shifted to reviving Josh’s project, Weerd Science, being as the sophomore record was nearly completed prior to the change of pace that Mours brought about. They lost the studio spot. April 20th, 2009 Josh, Wavis and Ant went to Cornell Street Studios with Gangstroph The Baptist and DJ Dirty Ern to rehearse for the Weerd Science live show when 3’s Joey Eppard, Daniel Grimsland and Gartdrumm stopped in. The 8 epically rocked out to “Dear S.A.M. I’m Dead too You” and “Clap if You 3> Someone" among other songs. Fortunately performances of those two songs were recorded and posted to youtube archiving the moment. Now in 2010 Josh is wrapping up recording his latest project and gearing up to tour the United States with Terrible Things. Anthony just played the first show with his latest project, The Flatline Symphony and recorded a song for Flannel Channel. This Session 606 studio time is well overdue and I’m freaking stoked to hear Chris Bittner play bass again! Coheed and Cambria have had some fun ones and even filmed their satirical “A Favor House Atlantic: The Movie” there. Applehead was where a lot of the magic went down for the first three Co&Ca albums. As funny as the “penis peeper” video was, my favorite until now has been Rape Kit. Anyway in this video, songstress Emily Long shows us the studio with CJB (the resident engineer there for nearly a decade) and they talk about the monstrous console once used by The Rolling Stones and The Black Crowes as well as countless others. Emily also shows us the microphone that idol Debbie Harry recently used while she and her band, Blondie, were walled up recording their latest record… And even gives us a preview of the track she sang for Flannel Channel’s forthcoming compilation/mix tape/record. In the live room you can even catch a glimpse of Josh Eppard’s old kick drum. But no studio video is complete without some fun. There’s a bit of DJ Dirty Ern messing with an Emily Long vocal sample on his iPhone in what I believe is the beat making app and we get the opportunity to meet some of the animals living on the farm outside! Travis McCoy (mostly known for Gym Class Heroes, though he’s got a slew of projects), will be releasing a solo record The Lazarus Project under the moniker, Travie McCoy, on his homeboy T-Pain’s label, Nappy Boy Entertainment… some time this year. The record will also be a joint release with Gym Class Heroes’ Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance and features a lot more singing than Travis fans are used to, apparently influenced by his appearance on Daryl Hall’s live webcast in 2008. According to AltPress.com, the record is the personal response to deaths of several friends, recovery from prescription pill addiction and the end of a very public romance with Katy Perry. According to an interview with XXLMag.com, Travie has not followed the lead of Nappy Boy founder and did not over-employ the use of Auto-Tune. Thank goodness! Other producers who’ve touched The Lazarus Project were Cannon and Detail. Cee-Lo has a confirmed guest appearance and a track with Lil’ Wayne has been leaked. “I tried to keep the guest appearances at a bare minimum because this is my first effort away from Gym Class Heroes, so I didn’t want it to be super appearance-driven,” McCoy said in an interview. “It’s me showing another side of Travis. There’s a lot more singing and a lot more melody, but I think the guests that are on the record are there for a reason and are meant to be on the record. I feel like a lot of people in the hip-hop world don’t take me seriously as a rapper. And I feel that first-and-foremost I came up as a rapper before I started singing. All a lot of people know from me is ‘Cupid’s Chokehold,’ and they don’t scratch the surface and see beyond that dude who sings the song about his girlfriend. Someone must’ve been looking out because Kingston, NY was completely clear of any snow the day of (hell, it was even t-shirt weather during the day) and didn’t begin to flurry well until after the Science team parted ways on Wednesday, February 24th. See, this was a free show to make up to the fans who came out on Saturday, January 16th to see Weerd Science, but instead got a completely different show. Josh Eppard was amidst recording his first Terrible Things record in Birmingham, Alabama with bandmates Fred Mascherino and Andy Jackson at producer Jason Elgin’s Syncromesh Studios. Since this show was booked before he even joined the band (originally called, Initials - now signed to Universal Motown Records) he shelled out all the cash in his pocket to hop a plane to Albany in time to drive the hour south to the “city with no name” for what was supposed to be his homecoming… the first hometown Weerd Science show since the impromptu sold-out performance at The Forum during a brief Coheed and Cambria tour break in 2005. However, as luck would have it, all the New York area airports locked down and were put on terror alert while Josh’s plane was in the sky. His flight was rerouted and took an emergency landing in Baltimore where he was eventually forced to share a hotel room with a total stranger after being told repeatedly that the flight would continue its course to Albany. The rest of the team traveled from Albany, Rockland, Queens and Trevose (Pennsylvania) for the deeply anticipated gig and ran around trying to pull a show together while eagerly awaiting Weerd Science’s arrival, completely unaware of the terror alert lockdown. Thankfully several Super Posse members were present and able to throw on impromptu performances. Mattrix, Session 606 and Rick Whispers performed sets giving the night some awesome music even if it wasn’t Weerd Science. After the music, the team gave the audience a listening party of Sick Kids… prepared to wait all night if they had to until Josh got into New York to finally perform the show. As “L1 Leader” was finishing they learned that Josh’s plane wasn’t going to get back in the air. Feeling completely defeated, they vowed to find a way to make things right. What better way than to do a free show? As soon as I left The Basement that night, I stopped at the Mobil to grab a cup of coffee before getting on the Thruway for my hour and change drive and I got a text message. Actually it was a tweet from John The Baker linking to an article that explained why flights were delayed. The article at that time claimed it was a terror threat. The next morning I learned what caused the chaos displacing thousands was… a man walked through a door he wasn’t supposed to. Amazing! That’s some Weerd Science for sure. Anyway, it looked as if yesterday’s free show would be canceled due to inclement weather. Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, Albany (Josh and Wavis’ new hometown) saw a foot of snow and several thousand homes throughout the Northeast suffered power-outages, including DJ Dirty Ern’s parents’ house in Woodstock. Down in Rockland I saw… slush. In Queens (where Dirty Ern now lives) there was nothing but a hell of a lot of rain. Ant “Session 606” Masington was snowed in over in Pennsylvania… but the forecast for Kingston said the weather would remain clear until about 3AM. There was a 30% chance of snow from midnight until then. A perfect window of no-snow for the show! So I drove my ass from sunny Rockland up to snowy Albany… grabbed Weerd and Wavis as quickly as I could and brought them, safely, down to barely-drizzly Kingston. Not too long after, Jimmy Eppard showed up with his gear to handle the live sound mixing (and contribute additional background vocals). Ern arrived, and the hometown crowd began to fill in. All sorts of old friends, new friends, familiar faces and not-yet-familiar faces. I was super stoked to see CJB (Chris Bittner), Gangstroph The Baptist (Kwame Wiafe-Akenten), Pat-in-the-Hat and VinUcci of the Super Posse! Weerd Science, Wavis and Dirty Ern did a few songs and decided that G.T.B. needed to come up on stage with them. Josh called his boy out and I was hit with such a wave of nostalgia! Kwam’s presence is undeniably grand and I feel freakin’ privileged every time I see him on stage (I’ve had the pleasure eight times before - CBGB/2005, West Strand Grill/2005, Chameleon Club/2007, Webster Underground/2009 x2, The Nyack Center/2009, Studio 98 Somerton/2009, The Chance/2009). I’ve loved that man’s aura since I first met him in 2003 while I was buying up all of Coheed and Cambria’s merch from him at the shows. Clearly I’m not the only one who feels this way because the crowd kept chanting his name between songs! They did a few more songs, then took a break and mingled for a bit. They performed “Clap if You <3 Someone,” gave us a taste of a completely unheard song- “Asylum,” first time ever live- “Ordinary Joe”… Unless that was during the first set? Hell I can’t remember. I’ll just list the other songs that I remember for sure. Josh gave a taste of the unreleased “Heaven Burns” a capella (the studio mp3 is on KillYourRapper), the intro to Sick Kids (which features Clip Payne of the Parliament Funkadelic), “Drugs,” “My War, Your Problem,” “God Bless Pepsi,” “Fuck You and Your Filthy A&R Dept.,” “Girl, Your Baby’s Wormfood,” “Joshua, They’re Laughing At You,” “Conspiracy Theories w/Out Mel Gibson,” “How To Be A…,” and they gave us a taste of “The Zodiac (Underground Rap Killer)” off the forthcoming Sick Kids (due out on Super Rap / Equal Vision Records 2010). VinUcci (Morbid Mentality Studios) filmed the full set so look out for it on his youtube page. He’s got a bunch of older sets on there too. This was the last Weerd Science show for… who knows how long. In a few weeks Josh is going out on tour with Terrible Things for like 9 weeks. They just wrapped up recording their debut record. I heard Josh Eppard ended up sitting in with him and the two played as only the Eppard Brothers can. Dang! But if I had gone I would’ve missed the wonderful Bears With Wings (they’re looking for a bass player) and the wicked Columbia (reminiscent of Breaking Pangaea. named after the space shuttle not the record label or misspelled country) at Valentine’s (downstairs) in Albany. I wouldn’t have missed the band I went there for though. Josh got to the venue in time to catch Nightmares For A Week. I’ve been dying to see them live since I first learned of the project about a year ago. Crazy that I haven’t been able to see them too because since their inception they’ve been constantly touring! That being said… I’m so ready to see NFAW live again! I don’t believe the size of the stage or the audience did them much justice. I saw explosive energy sparking beneath, though it was still a damn energetic set. It was pretty amazing watching kids (in the audience) jump up and down in unison. It’s been ages since I’ve seen/felt that at a fun punk rock show. Actually, I think the last time was Anadivine’s reunion show at The Basement in Kingston May 25th, 2008… and I got a glimmer of it at John The Baker with Slimy Penis Breath’s 15 year reunion at The Basement on December 5th, 2009. The music brought back memories of Jerk Magnet, Anadivine, The Get Up Kids, The Ataris, Jawbreaker, Lucero, Alkaline Trio, hints of Pitchfork Militia… a whole era that’s sorely missed. NFAW certainly has that quality of accessibility cross-pollinated with intricacy touching upon a wide variety of genres resulting in a completely unique sound. A quality that seems to exist in all projects that grow off the branches of TheFamily3. I definitely agree with Alternative Press Magazine that Nightmares For A Week is a band you NEED to know. I was compelled to pick up the NFAW EP “A Flood Tomorrow” (Music For End Times / Broken English) and upon listening to it in my car haven’t been able to turn it off. A real unique intimate way to experience the magic that is Joey Eppard in front of the vivid artwork of Scott Ackerman. I heard he performed a new, never-heard-before song. I also heard that there is no recording. Frig. Back on the “I’m glad I went” tip… Friday night I went to my second favorite NYC venue (of any size. #1 is a completely different market- The Nokia Theatre in Times Square) Sullivan Hall in the East Village. It was Funk Fest 4. The Rozatones were so good I walked away with two copies of their record, “Body on the Move.” Supremely unique band. Though it’s lead by the beautiful red-headed Revi Roza on guitar and vocals, I could not divert my eyes from the keyboard player, Adam Gold. I’m pretty sure he was rockin’ a Fender Rhodes, a Clavinet, AND a Moog Synthesizer. I couldn’t stop dancing either! Adam Gold remained on stage for the headlining act. The three-piece funk-hop, Sophistafunk. After Sophistafunk’s set was the late night show at Sullivan Hall: BioDiesel. Deeply technical jungle-hop dance music consisting merely of Clay Parnell (bass guitar, samples) and Johnny Rabb (drums, samples). Rabb is the fastest drummer in the world, holding the record for 1,071 strokes in 60 seconds. He’s a prime example of “just because you can doesn’t mean you must.” Their set reminded me a bit of the Weerd Science dudes in that it consisted of a stupidly sick drummer (along with a laptop) and a bass player triple-wielding a keyboard and laptop. A few years back Josh performed awe-inspiring drums with Coheed and Cambria along with Dave “Wavis” Parker double-wielding the keyboards and third guitar (no laptops though, hah). Josh and Dave are both very proficient and diverse musicians pursuing what they love- hip-hop. Because Rabb’s so skilled doesn’t mean he has to melt faces with Math-Rock. Truly extraordinary. Sunday I was hoping to spend Valentine’s Day with Zach Deputy at The Red Square in Albany. Unfortunately, his van broke down in Pittsburgh stranding he and his team and preventing them from making it to Utica and Albany. Shit happens. Especially when you drive all around the country performing upwards of 270 shows a year. The last time I went to see him I was stuck driving around to find a parking spot in New York City’s East Village and finally got into the venue as he was packing his gear up. Thankfully Sullivan Hall has a ridiculously amazing sound system and recorded the set because before The Macpodz were over I was able to get a CD of his performance. Didn’t stop me from buying his album, “Sunshine,” though it is more fun to listen to. Zach Deputy is all about the live show. He’s a man with one of the most unique, soulful and powerful voices my ears have ever had the pleasure of hearing and he performs solo… looping guitar and sounds to create the illusion and feel of a full band presence. I was introduced to Zach Deputy last March by CJB who was looking for some backing vox for a prodigious artist from South Carolina who traveled up to Woodstock to record with him. The prior day Zach Deputy suffered the ill-fortune of having his van stolen (with all of his equipment) in Paramus, NJ (thus the song “Paramus”). He maintained a cool-demeanor and pulled together all resources he could to get gear to finish up his sophomore record. I ended up at Applehead Studio with Wavis and Ant Masington (Session 606) where we contributed vocals to “Fresh Street,” “Sunshine,” and “Cool Yourself Off.” Ever since I’ve been trying my damnedest to experience Zach Deputy’s music the way it’s meant to… live. In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 - Coheed and Cambria - Live at the Starland Ballroom DVD

Released March 22, 2005 “Live At The Starland Ballroom” was Coheed and Cambria’s first live DVD. An audio CD of the performance was also included in the package, as well as several bonus videos. There were the music videos for “Devil In Jersey City,” “A Favor House Atlantic” and “Blood Red Summer.” There was also a documentary on the making of the “Blood Red Summer” video as well as two songs from the 2004 Skate and Surf Festival. Additionally there is an interview with Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever plus a stupidly hilarious interview with Mic Todd and Josh Eppard (who were snowed in at Applehead Studio in Woodstock, NY while recording the platinum record Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Volume 1, From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness). The DVD has since gone gold and features songs off the first two albums. The concert was presented by the now defunct New York City rock station, 92.3 K-Rock, and tickets were a mere 92 cents each. They sold out in a matter of minutes. Kill Radio and My Chemical Romance provided support for the September 20th, 2004 show, Coheed and Cambria’s first headlining show proceeding their first summer headlining the Vans Warped Tour. The Starland Ballroom is located in Sayreville, New Jersey. The DVD artwork was designed by renown graphic artist, Rob Dobi.
