...and check Reverence out, their latest album "Chamber of Divine Elaboration" is a freakin' masterpiece.

Oh and since you're here, you might as well read my review I wrote for http://www.vampire-magazine.com:

How dark can a record get? The Frenchmen of Reverence haven't thought about defining things and/or remaining in a box, they looked and stretched further the boundaries instead. Because of the great combination of such elements as depressive black metal, folk vocals, industrial approach and doom riffing, “Chamber of Divine Elaboration“ is an album to which one can get hooked easily.

During the whole album I was trying to find a bad moment, a filler song or anything that shouldn't have been recorded in the first place. The only conclusion I got after every listening session is that it's impossible to do so. It doesn’t matter how much you would like to dislike this piece of art, you will simply fail. Even if some of their compositions will sound too similar for you, Reverence brings their own version of gloomy, disconsolate and hopeless pile of darkness. Actually, all those words are rather laughable attempts to describe their music, words that could be used for some cloning ‘suicidal metal’ acts, but not in this case when the depressive and hateful atmosphere is for the most part present in the music itself, and not in the band’s biography, pictures, album cover art and band member’s ideology. All existing words and sentences are simply understatements for what this actually is.

Not often you will come across a black metal creature that is so unique, strong and one that will leave you gasping for breath after the first listen. People that praise the latest ones of Shining and Blut Aus Nord and at the same time give this album 7 out of ten are ignorant to say at least. Avantgarde Music proved once again to have a great taste and for those who doubted about that, “Chamber of Divine Elaboration“will be the convincing proof.

http://www.myspace.com/reverenceimc
http://www.reverence-imc.fr/

What do you mean no army duty ?

That’s right, if you thought you didn’t have to go to the army you were wrong. This idea comes from a big UK fan and basically we need to organize something in Belgium and Netherlands as well. What exactly is it? Well, we all meet before an Aborted gig, put some doctor masks and gloves on, with some red paint or something like that and make sure the moshpit will be present until the very end. Basically, the goal is to hang out, get drunk, and have some fun instead of just staring at the stage with your arms crossed.

The first appointment should be in Biebob, 13th October (together with Behemoth and Kataklysm). We need as much people as possible so don’t be a fucking pussy and show the band members some sweet loving. The only thing you have to do is to bring all the ‘material’, being the mask, the gloves (make sure they're white!) and the paint, and meet the rest outside some time after Lyfthrasyr has ended their gig. We can only offer free gloves and maybe some paint (though it depends how much people will show up, so mail us if you're planning to join). If you have any suggestions were you can buy doctor masks or you can bring some of them with you please do tell us by mailing to abortedarmybenelux[at]hotmail.com.

This part of Aborted Army will also concentrate on many other things such as special T-shirts, stickers and whatnot else. But all that will be revealed later on.

The doctors are in, bitches. Spread the word!

P.S. We are looking for people who want to do this in the Netherlands as well. So again, mail us if you're interested.

Other related bands:
Leng Tch'e, Emeth, Whorecore, In-Quest, Unleash The Fury, Axamenta, Herfst, Genital Grinder.

Fri 25 May – War from a Harlots Mouth, Dying Fetus, Ion Dissonance, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Dead to Fall, Cattle Decapitation, Skinless

Unlike on any other concert, I arrived at 19.00 sharp. And I didn't do that because I wanted to get drunk as hell, I had time enough to do that later anyway, but I had an interview scheduled with John Gallagher. As I already interviewed Mike for this e-zine, I thought it would be a great idea to interview John now instead, for my other webzine. So while I chatted with the only original member of the death metal horde, War From a Harlots Mouth already played their set. I did witness a couple of tunes, but that of course doesn't count. What I noticed is that there were so little people present…and what’s up with the big curtain behind the PA? It’s like they knew they would be not so many folks around...

Ion Dissonance was next up. Surprised? You should. I don't know why these complex metalcore beasts were so low on the bill but they still managed to play a short tight set. The crowd wasn't exactly what they deserve, but it is rather hard to mosh it up with their technical approach. Above that, the sound wasn't the best of the evening either. They had an impressive stage presence though (the bassplayer almost killed other members with his bass) and with both old and new songs they left a positive impression. This can’t be told about all the bands…

The core of metal continued when Through the Eyes of the Dead did hit the stage. Their music was more open and straightforward. They mix the Gothenburg genre together with hard- and metalcore. A recipe that is for sure has been tasted before, but they were the first band that actually received some decent feedback. That mostly included xhardxcorexkidsx doing spastic movements and acting like they're the next Bruce Li or something. Who said that humour was forbidden on a metal show? I sure did have a good laugh. The energy of the band was quite solid, and with a good sound they did nothing but what you'd expect from a normal deathcore group.

Once Dead To Fall came in it became clear that these guys are not taking the whole thing too serious. The singer passed the joint to all the members - and then to the public - and mentioned that they probably have to cut a song but this being a more important thing. You got to love the on-the-same-level-as-Southpark jokes. Less funny were the same riffs we already heard multiple times before this evening. And again the kids started dancing and doing ridiculously small circle pits. I started wondering why the hell I was doing there...

But, out of nowhere, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. It's like Robin Hood stealing from the rich and helping the poor, like Superman flying to rescue you, like Spiderman kissing you in an alley...Cattle Decapitation play tough death/grind with unique, insane vocals. What they brought live was something I missed on their albums; energy. And while they occasionally remind me of Anaal Nathrakh, their music is rather bleak. Nonetheless, I quite enjoyed their gig, and I consider them as a reliable warm-up.

Until now, humour was only used in a negative way but it changed when Skinlesscame into the picture. Using The Final Countdown melody as an intro or starting zombie wall of death proves that they’re always in for a good laugh. However, they handled their music instruments with serious concentration and there was not one boring moment from the beginning till the end. Plus an energetic, frontman who is able to have great contact with the audience and has an qualitative, brutal throat equals to a performance to remember. Finally a band that knew how to entertain a crowd, but the best was yet to come.

Some bands do have a massive sound on a record but fail miserably during a live situation. Dying Fetus can do both and they are here to underline that fact. The way the played wasn’t just a live show, it was a statement. Though they started playing around twelve o’clock the public kept moving. The setlist was, simply said, amazing. Going from “One Shot, One Kill” to “Schematics” and from “Intentional Manslaughter” to “Pissing in The Mainstream” and “Kill Your Mother, Rape Your Dog”, they set the place on fire. The tightness was exposed during every single song. While the sound was not always splendid (e.g. drum snare sounded too sharp here and there) superiority was the only thing we all received. Whenever this band plays in Belgium again, I will be there too.

It is a shame that the amount of people was even smaller than the amount of black people playing metal. But the evening was pleasent, though that also included walking home by foot, drunk, with a sleeveless, teared apart shirt and tons of bruises. But hey, how can it hurt, when you can not feel!

Written for http://www.vampire-magazine.com

Sun 8 Apr – Napalm Death, Moonspell, Behemoth, Obituary, Gojira, Brutal Truth, Dew-Scented

Because I arrived a bit too late I missed the opener ROOT, but gladly came in before the beginning of Extreme Noise Terror. I never felt like being a fan of this band, but they somewhat have a high level in the scene. The guys come straight of the street, especially the blond singer gives you that punk look. The sound wasn't exactly perfect, but both Adam and Dean enjoyed playing so much that it was just fun to watch them. The new drummer played good, although he's not the best around. They did not overtop my expectations but played a decent gig with some of their early hits such as "Bullshit Propaganda".

Finding a new drummer seems to be the new hype in metal as the Frenchmen of Scarve recently cleaned their drum chair for Dirk Verbeuren which some will know of his impressive work with Aborted. Not that thrilling was their show, although I was overwhelmed by some technical moments. A good band that deserves their place on the bill, however more, continuous, fire in their performance would be welcome. And the sound was again not what I would wish for, so considering that they did a good job and I don't think a lot of people left the building...

It's been one year since I saw Dew-Scented and my first impression of this gig was that their musical capability has been improved a lot. They are still very energetic and know how to entertain a crowd, but their technical ability rose sharply. Aside Legion of the Damned they're probably the best modern thrash distributors I've seen live. Not only they played tight, but they succeed to deliver some nice post-old school aggression. Great show!

I was really looking forward to the following band, and which fan of them didn't, it was only their 4th show ever, and 2nd show outside UK. The sound was pretty terrible but Anaal Nathrakh is a chaotic band on albums, so having clean live settings on their show would steal the magic. But I still think they managed to pull off a good show, and the live members did a satisfying job as well. The clean vocals could use more volume because they sounded a little bit quiet and un-right in the mix. However, it couldn't get any better after they played "Submission is for the weak" and I actually tried to sing along with "Between Shit And Piss We are Born" even though I knew shit about the lyrics. The varied setlists consisted songs from all their albums so they had enough urine to piss on all of us. I hope AN will tour a little bit more as it was a great experience to witness these haters live.

From now on nothing could go wrong (until Moonspell arrived, but that's a different story) as the next band is the main reason I came to this damn fest anyway. The guys of Behemoth came, putted their make-up on, and conquered all. I think the volume was on 11 and their energetic act was so imposing that their blackened death caused people to go nuts. This was the first moment of the day that I actually felt this was a No Mercy Fest. The disappointing sound in the beginning went slowly away and nothing stood in the way of this band's brutal brilliancy. Their short song list was only filled with their first-class tracks they have recorded in the past 8 years of their lengthy discography. From "Decade of Therion" to "Conquer All" to "As Above So Below" to their new song from "The Apostasy", the tightness remained on every song. The band is addictive on a cd, and live they're equal to that adjective. They actually deserve a higher spot on the bill, only if the next band wasn't present...

Yes, you can't forget about these legendary grind-starters. After Behemoth it was a sudden change of genre and especially vocals, but Napalm Death didn't come to disappoint. With songs from their latest "Smear Campaign" to the old, influentially self-titled song of "Scum" they continued the excellence that was set by the previous band. With solid sound and active band members on stage it was a blast to be killed by napalm grind. The catchy "The Code Is Red…Long Live The Code" only helped that process. From short tracks to more lengthy ones; the band keeps their spirit alive for now about 25 years and are probably the best grindcore band around. I must say that I appreciate them more on albums, but once in a while I would spend my money with pleasure to see these anti-Nazis in real life.

Moonspell is one of those bands that never got me interested so I was not expecting anything. There were some thoughts before the show that I might be wrong, but after a few songs their drowning gothic metal mix started to sound soporific and because I still wanted to be awake during Obituary I went outside where I still heard their soft musical presentations. There are bands which I dislike but still can appreciate their metal rustle live, but this Portugal creation was an exception. But there was no time to sit down and being miserable because right after them Obituary came up and brought the fire back, on and off stage. Their worn out setlist began with the instrumental "Redneck Stomp" which was followed by "On the Floor" and "Insane", same sequence as on their great comeback disk "Frozen in Time". The oldies like "'Til Death", "Cause of Death", "Turned Inside Out", "I'm In Pain" - and of course the closer "Slowly We Rot" - were played identical to their old school days with true death metal essence and without any variety or alternately songs. A nice performance, with too less action on stage, but their music speaks for itself, although the presence of Allen was definitely missed. A band that, with a new setlist and complete line-up, you'd never get tired of.
But I was tired of this long day and evening. Anaal Nathrakh and Behemoth were my personal highlights, other bands did their best as well, although Moonspell deserves more to be on a X-Mas fest since I found no merciless attitude neither in their music nor their show...

Setlist Anaal Nathrakh:
1. Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes
2. Between Shit And Piss We are Born
3. Submission Is For The Weak
4. Do Not Speak
5. The Destroying Angel
6. When Fire Rains Down From The Sky, Mankind Will Reap As It Has Sown
7. When the Lion Devours both Dragon and Child
8. Pandemonic Hyperblast

Setlist Moonspell:
1. Finisterra
2. Memento Mori
3. Opium
4. Awake
5. Ruin and Misery
6. Blood Tells
7. Upon the Blood of Men
8. Vampiria
9. Alma Mater
10. Full Moon Madness

Written for http://www.vampire-magazine.com

Fri 9 Mar – Kreator, Celtic Frost, Watain, Legion of the Damned

Legion of the Damned setlist.
Celtic Frost setlist (onvolledig).
Kreator setlist.

Heb je ook foto's?

Fri 23 Feb – Rotting Christ, Malevolent Creation, Neuraxis, Incantation, Mystic Circle

- stilte in de zaal - Do you believe in God?
