Lea Salonga wowed Bacolod with her voice and her charm. The La Salle Coliseum was fully occupied, all 7,000 or so seats. She is truly world class. Totally amazing. Totally awesome.

Lea’s Concert in Bacolod City was supposed to be held last January 12. However, since she had laryngitis and was advised to take a rest, it was moved to January 26. But with the performance she just had, who would have thought that only two weeks ago she wasn’t even allowed to talk by her doctor? Everytime she sings, she gets into character that you just don’t hear the song but you feel it. Oh, and the way she handles the crowd is just amazing. If only I can have half of her wits! Everytime she says something witty or funny, the crowd returned with cheers and applause.

Her repertoire included I Dreamed A Dream, I Don’t Know How To Love Him, Taylor the Latte Boy, On My Own, Love Look Away, I’d Give My Life For You, Two Words, Promise Me, Anak, Hahanapin Ko, Tomorrow, Journey, Reflection, A Whole New World (duet with Jed Madela), Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal (first encore), Balut Penoy (second encore), and of course Ilonggo folk song Ahay Kalisud which really pleased the crowd. Her diction is so perfect that you wouldn’t know she’s not a Hiligaynon speaker. For those who still don’t know it yet, Lea Salonga’s mom Ligaya, hailed from Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. Jed Madela also did a very good performance. I’ve seen him perform live with his band in Iloilo before but the songs he sang during Lea’s concert really showed his vocal prowess.

http://www.promdiliving.com

Thu 3 Jan – Lea Salonga

This review is courtesy of Jason.

I was there....she sang the following (I'll try to put them in order).

Something's Coming
I've Never Been In Love Before
Hahanapin Ko
Someone to Watch Over Me
I Don't Know How To Love Him
A Whole New World (acapella - just her portion)
Reflection
You Must Love Me
On My Own
I'd Give My Life For You
I Dreamed a Dream
Taylor the Latte Boy
I Still Believe in Love (is that the title)
Something Wonderful (I think from the King and I)
Being Alive
Encore - Tomorrow

(I might be missing 1 or 2 more songs) She had a headcold - but delivered as expected!!! The show was scheduled to start at 7:30 pm, but due to traffic, and crowd build-up at the entrance, it started around 8:15. First of all, about San Manuel Casino, the venue was set in a huge, I mean huge banquet hall. There must have been over 1500 seats. It was packed. One of my friends tried to get tickets but couldn't. It's a disadvantage if you were sitting far from the stage because the hall is not elevated or tiered like your regular theatre type of set-up. The crowd build-up was due to the Will-Call line, and the security line to get in the theatre. San Manuel is very strict about Cameras. No one is allowed to take ANY pictures within the San Manuel building. We tried to take pictures while having dinner before the show, but we got reprimanded for it. There were metal detectors, and guards before entering the hall. Sad to say, but some people still braved to defy the rules, and got away with bringing in their cameras and took pictures or videos. Lea candidly requested that should anything go wrong with any of her songs, to please not to post the video on YouTube. She needs not to worry......simply.flawless!

I'm fortunate to have seen some of her past California shows and to have her CD's and stuff. So, coming into last night's concert, I was looking forward to hearing new songs that I've never heard her sing Live. So, of the songs mentioned above, I enjoyed all of them, but especially enjoyed "I Dreamed a Dream", "Taylor the Latte Boy", and "I Still Believe in Love" (is that the title - I don't know). The showstoppers for me where her Miss Saigon and Les Miz segments. Since it was a condensed show, there was no intermission. Two water bottles and Kleenex were Lea's stage mates. I think she ended around 9:30-9:45pm. Her disclaimer was her head cold, but she was amazing nonetheless. Never cracked.....stayed strong throughout the show. I'm looking forward to seeing future shows with newer material. When she walked out to start signing the CD's, you can just tell that she was tired. But as I mentioned, she never showed any of that while performing. She took command of that stage.

NOTE: I'm not sure what the regulations are in the other casinos where Lea will be performing in the future, but I gotta tell you, San Manuel Casino was very strict in enforcing the No One Under 21 rule. I saw 2 families with 2 young teens, and they were not allowed to enter. It's a casino policy, not the concert event. So, a friendly advise, be 21 and over, and if you still look young, bring an ID.

Jason's Multiply
Lea Salonga's San Manuel Concert Review

Two years later, she won a Tony for it in New York.

In the 1990s, she supplied the voice for Jasmine in Disney's "Aladdin" as well as "Mulan." She played Eponine, the lovesick petty thief, in "Les Miserables." Last year, she returned to the show as Fantine, a prostitute who sacrifices her life for her child while singing big ballads.

She said "Les Miz" fans would stone her if she expressed a preference between Eponine and Fantine. In concert she does both their songs, "On My Own" and "I Dreamed a Dream."

Like Fantine, Salonga's character Kim in "Miss Saigon" dies to protect her son. She also shoots a communist to protect him.

She said Kim's big number, "I'd Give My Life," now means more to her.

"I can certainly now really sympathize with her now more as a mother, not just as a character but as a really fleshed-out human being. I can understand that you would kill for your child. You really would."

In the near future, Salonga faces a less dire ordeal, "a very long plane ride home" to the Philippines with a toddler.

"That's going to be pretty much an adventure, and my mother worries that I'll go insane. But I have a really good kid. ... And I'll have to arm myself with a little Benadryl, too!"

Lea SalongaUltimate Disney PrincessReflectionThe JourneyOn My OwnA Whole New WorldWhen October GoesA Little Fall Of Rain

Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, who will return to Broadway as Fantine in the current revival of Les Misérables, will release her latest solo recording later this month.

According to the Manilla Bulletin, Salonga's new studio recording is entitled "Inspired" and will be available on the SonyBMG Music Entertainment label. Among the songs featured on the new CD are Beverly Craven's "Promise Me," Jim Brickman's "To Hear You Say," Lani Macaraeg's "Do You Hear It" and Louie Ocampo's "Two Words."

About her new recording, Salonga told the Manilla Bulletin, "I've very, very excited about this new album. It's been a while since I've gone into the studio to record a full scale CD, so the process has been truly enjoyable. I love these wonderful orchestrations and the sound they've created. My job was made incredibly easy! All I had to do was open my mouth and sing!" The orchestrations were penned by Salonga's brother, Gerard Salonga, as well as Ria Osorio and Marvin Querido.

When asked why she titled her disc "Inspired," Salonga said, "I guess it's a word that describes our collective state of being. We were inspired by various things: My new baby, different artists' albums and/or vocal stylings, experiences, people, just going about our individual days. There wasn't any one thing I can pin down or point out, but whatever these things were, it brought out our best."

Other titles on the new recording include "When October Goes," "My Foolish Heart," "Brian's Song," "Sing" and "Waiting for Love."

Lea Salonga burst onto the London and New York theatre scene as Kim in the international hit musical Miss Saigon. For her performance, she was awarded the Laurence Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World awards. On Broadway she was also seen in another Boublil Schönberg musical, Les Misérables, as the ill-fated Eponine, a role she would later repeat in the concert video of the musical. Her most recent Broadway appearance was in the revival of Flower Drum Song.

Salonga joins the Les Miz revival March 6 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
