I realized that I didn't really listen to a lot of 2007's albums, or at least I didn't pay much attention to them. This year was almost dedicated to the spectrum between 70~90's, but nontheless I like to think I've heard what I was supposed to hear.

So, my list goes as followed:

1) Witchcraft - The Alchemist
2) Dave Gahan - Hourglass
3) Dinosaur Jr - Beyond
4) Grinderman - Grinderman
5) Editors - An End Has a Start
6) Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo
7) She Wants Revenge - This Is Forever
8) Blonde Redhead - 23
9) The White Stripes - Icky Thump
10) Moving Units - Hexes For Exes

The (good) rest:

11) Ra Ra Riot - Ra Ra Riot
12) Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement
13) Patti Smith - Twelve
14) Babyshambles - Shotter's Nation
15) 65daysofstatic - The Destruction of Small Ideals

Top Disappointments:

1) The Bravery - The Sun And The Moon
2) Interpol - Our Love To Admire
3) Frog Eyes - Tears of the Valedictorian
4) Ian Brown - The World Is Yours
5) Low - Drumgs And Guns
6) 1900S - Cookies
7) Their Hearts Were Full of Spring - These Are Our Songs, We Wrote Them For You
8) Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga
9) The Magnetic Fields - Distortion

Please don't tell me to include Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem or Amy Winehouse.
[my] (harsh) truth about CONTROL

So I finally got to see Control, the movie about Joy Division, and more specifically, Ian Curtis. For months I've been waiting for it to premiere, and to watch one of the most mysteryously dramatic stories about someone as odd as life itself. I can't say I'm disappointed, but unfortunately I can't say I'm satisfied either. I'll explain.

At the very first minute, you know you're going to get the silent treatment through the whole film. When you think about it, it makes some sense. Ian was a writer and a singer, but definitely not a speaker. You allow yourself to be embraced with a monochromatic silence, and a lack of long straight sequences that won't ever let you dissect whatever the hell was going on there. And yet, there is plenty of time for you to absorb the heat, or the cold, of that specific moment.

And there you have it. Ian Curtis is played by Sam Riley, a young man who's not a perfect match for Ian's looks, and definitely not a target hit on Ian's voice, but... he's the perfect middle term. The movie includes both music played by the original band members, and from the actors themselves, including the lead singing of Sam Riley. His effort is remarkable, but often failing miserably [his interpretation of Isolation is bloody terrible].

The story is straight forwarding. Perhaps too much. The sequences are short, silent, and they're simply too many. If Anton Corbjin's intention was to create frustration out of the lack of communication, he got way more than that. Which is good at some point, but then it just really gets you on your nerves. One hundred and twenty minutes of silence treatment can be harsh, so sometimes you're bombed with what seems to be some kind of an introspective diary, as if Curtis himself had the need to express and explain to you directly what he was going through. And honestly, it's akward. You can (could) get so much out of the facts themselves, that having someone explaining to you makes the whole plot fit together and following the same straight line.

And that, is bad.

Those who have seen 24 Hour Party People will find in Control a whole different approach. I was afraid Anton would make Ian's story into some kind of beautiful fairytale, something people could remember and tell others in a predefined order of events and emotions. And I wasn't completely wrong... the movie can be cruel, but it's not even as raw as those twenty minutes of Joy Division we get to lick in 24 Hour PP. Sean Harris may actually have been a better Ian than Riley, because he didn't call for the use of words. Riley is a closed book obviously, but only with heavy weights on top. Control represents darkness with a cherry on top.

But the main reason of my disappointment is because there could be so much more here. The characters are exactly what you would expect them to be, and you can't really love one of them. They don't give that much mystery, maybe except for Annik, which is gorgeous, a stunning woman who had a minor grade of importancy on the general plot... again, there could easily be so much more. It's like each character had their own string pulling them towards the very same end, and just when you think the string is about to break, it doesn't.

At some point, Ian Curtis [Sam] tells Annik that "some things about Joy Division are not meant to be beautiful". This is exactly what Anton should have paid more attention to, because in the end, it's all just a somewhat comprehensive story which doesn't really leave you wondering around thinking "what the hell happened after all?". You're pushed, they give you a puzzle of a thousand pieces and for two hours, they mount the first 950 pieces for you. The beautiful thing about Ian and the late 70's/early 80's Joy Division story is the fact that you simply cannot understand it. It's a back and forth of events, and fortunately this roleplay is pretty well expressed throughout the whole movie...

...until you get tired of it. The true charisma and nature of Ian really lied of his lack of ability to just cope with the world, and how he seemed to find a way to get lost on his own depressive thoughts, still putting them up together on his lyrics. On "Control", he can simply be described as a downer.

But the moments do sink in, eventually, and wether they're forced or not, the truth is they hit you. You miss the caption as a whole, but you know it's there. Still, I would rather have a shorter approach 24HPP style, because in this particular case, distance only means you're getting closer. And if you don't get it, even better.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but the rush just is not one of my side-effects right now. Not even with the unfair "Atmosphere" being played just when Deborah finds Ian hanging, which would hit me like a damn frisbee if it wasn't so unfortunately predictable. But the [lack of] words is there, and they're burnt on wood. Timeless, eternal, just like they were then. But only now the world actually gets them. Sadly, the film also misses this final consideration.

I don't really think New Order enjoyed this particular focus on Ian's life instead of the band itself. But then again, they still feel their shame admitting that they just didn't care back then.

If records could talk, all of these eighty nine albums would tell you the story of my life, detail by detail. Because they were there, through everything that's been said and done. This is not a list of my favorite albums - that would be more than twice the size - rather than that, this list is about the albums that somehow changed the way I am, or the way I look up to life.

Albums I cried to, smiled to, danced to, made love to, got angry to, hated to, rocked to, albums that made me think, albums that made me think of others. My idea was to make my 50 album tribute, but yes, I got a little carried away :) I'm certainly missing a few, but they will be added then.

As a respect to the elders, the albums are sorted from their release date. (well, now it's not so clear with the date mistakes corrected. But I'll get there ;P)

1)Johnny Cash – Sings Hank Williams (1960)

2)Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin (1969*corrected)

3)Grateful Dead – American Beauty (1970*corrected)

4)Miles Davis – Columbia Recordings (1961)

5)Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland (1968)

6)Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left (1969)

7)Al Green – The Belle Album (1970?)

8)David Bowie – The Man Who Sold The World (1971)

9)Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues (1971)

10)The Doors – L.A.

After creating several sites to place my album reviews and deleting most of them, I've decided to put them here, at a lastfm journal. This way I can keep it updated and people can agree/disagree with my reviews. The order of the following albums is totally irrelevant.

ALBUMS:

White Rose Movement - Kick
The Indie Rock generation is out there alive and kicking, no question about that. WRM came out directly to the top favourites of many people (mainly brittish of course). This London band states itself as somewhat different from all other Indie groups, drinking a bit more of the New Romantic wave. You’ll find yourself hearing the 80’s all over again but this time white an electro/electroclash energy, with such melody and power that every single track is a whole new breeze waiting to be felt, and heard. The perfect middle between Joy Division, Depeche Mode and Muse (as for the voice). Kick is definitely kicking around, and surely deserves a good listen.
Personal Rating: 9/10

Broadcast - Tender Buttons
The first time I heard Broadcast it was only by accident, considering that I did trip on the song I Found the F. It's relaxing and the electronic sounds caught my attention, so I decided to give them a try. Surprisingly, the band is not so unknown after all, and its quite quite hard to find a bad review about this album. Tender Buttons, better yet, Broadcast is a whole different world than the one we're used to. The electronic sound is far away from being techno, and ever more far away from the drumm n' bass electro sounds so common in bands like Telefon Tel Aviv or Air.

No. Broadcast can be different. I may even have the guts to say that it's an alternative verson of Ladytron in her early years; (the invitation for Ladytron's lovers is already made) very synthetic, sometimes roughly noisy, but the organic feeling in it is amazingly superb. The song "Subject to the ladder" is a primus and a complete work of art, even without the electric synthethizer complexity giving all that space. On the contrary. Tender Buttons can be a very closed album and you'll surely feel it within your own space, suiting all your daily moods.

It's impossible to attach hard feelings into it, feels good, feels rough and smooth at the same time, and the voices are strangely comforting.
Simple, sweet, and deep without complexity. Honestly, this is where Ladytron manages to fail. The only bad review about this album is the length feeling it has; feels like very little after hearing it a couple of times, but the good part is, you can't get tired of it. Put on repeat during your whole day and it's gonna be a much better world for you. Guaranteed. Personal Rating: 8/10

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
"De-loused in the comatorium" was huge. A very fine example of touch n' go, with their own personal style and not afraid of risking inside the album itself. The public appreciated. The public asked for more. And now the public got more. One word can perfectly define this entire album; confusion.

Some of the tracks are quite long (some of them are in between 10@12minutes) and they jump without a single warning from melancholic silence to a justapose of electric guitars and squinching noises alltogether. Delighted already? Not yet. The Widow is probably the most solid and well constructed song from the whole album, and most certainly, it is the first one you'll hear in repeat. You might even be afraid to repeat the other songs; and honestly this is something that already happened with the first album. Periods of pure compoised noises followed by silent interludes and getting back to confusion again.

Yes, this is Mars Volta. And especially, Frances the Mute. Too much I'd say, which stops many people from getting interested in the album from the very first to the very last second of it. A true mountain of emotions, which sometimes finds itself on the edge of a cliff. But not much to worry about. Frances the Mute is clearly influenced by the first album, which makes sure the fans won't be disapointed with it. Altough (extremely) alternative and risking too much it's distinguish sound, it's quite a well constructed album and will certainly entertain the fans of the... different. Personal rating: 7/10

The Divine Comedy - Victory for the Comic Muse
He's back! He's back! He's back and in a wonderful shape.

No, Hannon is not getting old. He still knows exactly what he's doing, and does it perfectly. Victory For The Comic Muse is a surprisingly gorgeus album, and will certainly deserve to be one of the greatest albums of 2006.

The general "ambience" of it is generally the same found in Absent Friends. You get either introspective songs, hopelessly romantic and satiric ones. The lyrics are, as always, wonderfully composed and it makes you think "How could anyone ever think of this? It's gorgeous!"
The single "A Lady Of a Certain Age" will probably be the most sucessful one. It's brilliant, and it appeals to everyone's senses and feelings. It's far from being sad, but it definitely touches you. "Arthur C. Clarkes's Mysterious World" is a very funny and satiric song about him not being able to understand "her". Reminds me the Frog Princess from a previous album.

The other songs are beautiful as well, either one with it's own qualities. The rythm is ear catching in almost every track, and will certainly delight you for a long long time.

Definitely one of the best buys you can make this year. Do not miss this oportunity, which brought me the feeling of "good music is still made nowadays!" I haven't felt in a couple of years. Personal Rating: 9/10

Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
A rather funny album, with plenty of joy to give and share. Melodic as always, Dear Catastrophe Waitress dates of 2003 and still makes me sing the catchy and humurous tunes they play and read. It's not of their best, it is for sure, but when it comes to off-topic music Belle and Sebastian definitely have a word of their own they would like to share with you. Personal Rating: 7/10

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
I have to admit I never expected to love this so much. The first time I heard DCfC was somewhere in the middle of the OC series, and at first it mean't absolutely nothing. But it grows on you at an unbeliavable rate, transforming itself in some sort of a need. You NEED to hear it, no matter where you are or how you feel. Addicting in the mind and in spirit, Death Cab for Cutie will change a lot of people's mind about commercial music. It changed mine for sure. Personal Rating: 8/10

The Cure - Wild Mood Swings
I could write about any other wonderful album of the Cure's discography. Every single one of them has something tremendally beautiful to offer, and this journal wouldn't be enough for me to talk about all of them. Still, Wild Mood Swings was one of the first to really move me, and nowadays it still does. Songs like "Bare" or "Want" are absolutely marvellous, it makes you tap and cry simultaneously. Brilliant, and that's the key why The Cure does so remarkably well. WMS creates pictures, it develops stories by itself and fires up your most romantic imagination. If you go emo, at least go with style. Personal rating: 10/10

Johnny Cash - Money V
Cash made Money. And he did great. One of the elderly works, with that sweet grumpy teary voice of his, impossible to reproduce with such innocence and honesty, Cash's words impugne regret and simplicity in every single character. One can either cry, laugh or just be well with the world. Money V is only an example of one of the most beautiful works ever made, which contais the great "God's Gonna Cut You Down" and "A Legend In My Own Time".

Money V does not exhaust, it just goes smooth. It makes you want to listen the track to the end and jump to another one you know it's good, at the very same time. But it's an album to listen with patience, maybe with a good Port on your hand. Or just sleep at a fireplace with it. What the hell, just listen to it. Personal Rating: 10/10
