The most overlooked category in the Academy Awards is probably the "Best Original Score." The soundtrack frequently is what brings out the nuance of a scene. When the music (or sound effect) is skillfully edited you project Life into the work. It is very subliminal. However, when the job is overdone, it's a complete failure when you sense that the film is dictating your emotional reactions.

For the 2009 Oscar-Nominated Scores, Andy Trudeau at NPR has a great article. One can also listen online to the broadcasted version.

My top pick for this year is Slumdog Millionaire -- soundtrack by A.R. Rahman (not ramen ;-) for its world fusion music, or as Trudeau suggests, world collision music. The film itself is superb, and will probably win the best film. Even the credits on the end roll by with a wonderful Bollywood musical finish!

What was your favorite? Comment here, or at the new last.fm group: music is our soundtrack to the cinema called my Life.

~Adriano

P.S. - The score for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by Alexandre Desplat had its very beautiful poetic moments, but in retrospect it seemed slightly overdone in key scenes.

Bonus: Slumdog trailer, remixed!

.
