my top 10 album releases of 2012

Yeah, i know, can't look at this post's title without yawning a bit myself, since top lists at the end of a year are usually nothing to get excited about. oh well - at least it's my own so i'm decently amused right now (and who wouldn't be?). actually came up with this as some sort of bet with a friend - considering the insane amount of good music we've been showered in this year (if you don't know what i'm talking about, then your planet must be in a different solar system than mine. feel free to invite me tho, could be fun.) it's quite a challange to narrow all the good stuff down to just 10 absolute favourites.

while failing miserably in picking a number one or even an order of preference i selected the releases i liked most while trying to eliminate stylewise somewhat similar pieces by picking just the best (quick example - the last installment by the tony danza guys blew both whitechapel and job for a cowboy's still very good recordings out of the water for me). for a bit of variety among all the death, prog, futuristic and thrashy stuff. ;^)

fun facts : out of all the bands named i was able to see three live this year; two of them on the same concert. seems i fancied two part album names a lot this year (diagnosis : whatever). reaaaally hope for a realeasewise less fruitful 2013, because - seriously - give me a break, gosh darn it!

ad astra, a fine prog metal group from budapest with a wide range of influences, have finally released their second album "open wide" which can be (together with 2007's "crust of ego" recording) downloaded for free :

worth your time? hell yes - if you're not completely disgusted by smart, somewhat technical & melodic metal with a wild side to it, you can't do anything wrong here (except for not listening to the boys of course). open wide, enjoy + spread the word!

you like your metal dark and mysterious but still get excited about electronic / ebm / dubstep sounds from time to time?

shame on you!? haha, no, read on cause i'm going to tell you about something you'll really enjoy.

seth.ect from turky is a project of several musicans that mixes dark, symphonic and sometimes a little oriental modern death metal sounds with dancable electronics. the hybrid result (think of a more digital / less orchestral cousin of Septic Flesh and you're on the right track) sends your ears and mind on an impellent joyride to sudatory occult dimensions.

"... to stay out of the loop that is nowadays cruel buy-sell-system .." they give their music including 2011's great "Godspeak"-album and a new single which has a Prodigy coverversion out for free on their webseite. there is a "donate" button though that opens up a list of chairity organisations for starving children which i find very symphatic considering the fact that they don't just talk noble ideology, but act that way too.
