Local band, "One Pin Short" opens the night. Pretty entertaining band.
Great start to a great show.


Tomorrow's Bad Seeds plays next. This is a video I got from my Nikon.
The video is HD, but the audio suffers.


This is one of my favorite songs of the night, "Vices". This one caught the band's eye.


And playing into the morning, The Wailers banged out a remarkable set, playing "Uprising" in it's entirety.



The guys from TBS recognized me and my camera from the Bakersfield, and even commented the video for Valerie.



They used some footage from the "Vices" video for their Facebook,
which was pretty cool.

Even as I was walking up to the doors of the Rabobank Convention Center, I could feel the good vibes in the air and knew that were a good time was in everyone's immediate future.. I was suprised to see faces from all walks of life and all types of backgrounds coming together to enjoy one show.

As soon as the doors opened, I ran to my usual spot; front rail, slightly off center. People started pouring into the pit, and before I knew it there was a sea of roaring fans (in)patiently awaiting for the show to begin.

About 15 minutes prior to the start of the show, local radio station (KRAB) personallity, Miranda Whitworth, comes out and thanks the crowd for coming out to the show. You could feel the energy go up in 3.5 seconds. Everyone was ready for it. Miranda let us off with one last request, "Don't forget to pass it to the left".

As soon as the Dirty Heads came out, the crowd started to become alive. People were singing along and were treated to a few new songs off the Head's next album. KRAB's retro Robin was in the audience singing along to every tune.

I'm pretty sure that Jared and co. were well aware that I was playing shutterbug that night. Rome Ramirez joined them for their mega-hit, "Lay Me Down". Half-way through the song, Jared Watson jumped off the stage and came out to the crowd. He litterally posted up right in front of me. Before jumping back onstage, he gave a quick wave at the cam!

Shortly after Dirty Heads completed their set, Sublime with Rome took the stage. This was my 3rd time seeing them, and yet it felt as if it was the first time I'd ever been to a concert. They came out and opened with a few classics. Rome informed us that they were busy in the studio working on a record for 2011. New songs like, "Panic" and "Take it or Leave it" were amazing. I love the classic setlist grouping, and their covers of Bad Brain's "House of Suffering / I love I Jah and The Decendent's "Myage" are exactly what I love about Sublime....they are not afraid to show love to their favorite bands.

After a 26 song setlist, the people of Bakersfield were burning for more. No one moved an inch, and the energy in the room was as thick as the white fluffy clouds. After about 5 minutes, the guys come out for 3 last songs.

I understand that a lot of people think of this new encarnation of the band as borderline blasphemy, but Rome is not a replacement; who could ever replace Bradley and Lou? I was too young to see OG Sublime live. Sublime is undboubtedly my favorite band ever. Before SoF'09 I often thought about how cool it would have been to have gone to a Sublime concert. Just listening to the songs, I could envision the pit, the crowd surfers, and the music. I'm glad that Rome was able to connect with the group in such a way and bring this live to a new generation of fans.

Overall, the music was definately the winner. The crowd was amazing and diverse (only thing to love about Bakersfield). You can see a new generation of Sublime fans, and that's what it's all about.

I think Bradley Nowell said it best....
"Peace! Nothing but peace and unity"

We arrived at the Irvine Amphitheater at 10 in the morning to get in line, even though the gates wouldn't be open until 1pm. As soon as the gates open, I run my ass to the Bud Light stage and claim my spot on the rail. After a few of the sets, I started getting really really thirsty, but I was damned if I was going to surrender my spot for a drink of water, when I could drink water any other day. So I stick through what seemed to be 5 hours of waiting...and then....Deftones come out.

The crowd went from looking tired and drained to worked up and ready to bang some heads. I shook my ass and sang my heart out, only making the dehydration problem worse. Just when I thought my body would give out, "Birthmark" comes on! As soon as that happened, I forgot all about the existence of water or the crowd. I became one with all and all in one.

This was the 5th time I was lucky enough to catch on of their shows (San Bernardino @ Family Values '06, Fresno @ Rainbow Ballroom '07, Ventura @ Fox Theater '08, San Bernardino @ Smokeout Festival '09, and Irvine @ Weenie Roast '10.)

I was also at Epicenter '09, and got to catch the amazing set that Alice in Chains put on. I felt my eyes tear up a bit, because I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be hearing "Them Bones" or "Would?" in a live performance. I am so glad that William DuVall was able to come in and bring the heat. I expected great things, and they definitely delivered. During the new numbers like "Check My Brian" and "A Looking in the View", I felt that Jerry, William, Mike and Sean did an excellent job in channeling the musical essence and spirit of the late, great Layne Staley, while cementing the fact that they are still kings of the scene. The most admirable quality of a lead singer that steps into an band that has already established a major fan base is that they don't come in and immitate the work of the former frontman, but rather carry on the art, and show us the originallity in themselves. William does just that, and for that, I thank him.

I've yet to have the privilege of seeing Mastodon live. I actually discovered the band through the SuicideGirls website, where Brent and Troy did an interview. I decided to look further and discovered some great music that was hiding right under my nose. I am super excited about the Jonah Hex movie. I was able to get my ears under some of the soundtrack, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Mastodon laid many of the tracks for the film. Looking forward to catching a show, because the way the music is laid...eargasm...

I can only imagine what that night will bring! Three of the most rockin' bands out there, who which have some of the best new material that has come out of any bands in the past decade, all on one stage in one heavy night! I wouldn't, couldn't miss this!

I can't put into words the gratitude and debt that I would be in to you guys if you gave me the opportunity to be an official videographer for BLACKDIAMONDSKYE at your 10/16 Las Vegas, NV leg of the tour.

Either way, love the Deftones, AIC, and Mastodon for all the music and great memories from all the shows. Thanks!

PS: I would like to thank Deftones' manager for getting me back into the Ventura Fox Theater after the security guards kicked me out for passing my blunt around. I even got to meet DJ Kilmore that night! Thanks!
