So great news - after asking what seemed to be like a million people, I've finally convinced a friend of mine to tag along with me to On the Bright Side Festival (as I'm not cool enough to go by myself...) On the down side however, she has completely no idea who any of the acts are and have never heard any of the bands on the setlist before. Thus I decided to create this neat little mixtape to introduce her to some awesome new music and hopefully convince her that tagging along with me to this festival might not be such a bad thing after all :)

So a penpal of mine from Germany was telling me that his knowledge of the Australian music scene lies somewhere between Kylie and Silverchair :P Naturally, I decided that I had to do something about it which led to the creation of this playlist.

I actually found this a little challenging creating a playlist solely comprised of music made by Australian bands and artists as most of the bands that I currently listen to tend to be either British or American. That, and I haven't listened to Triple J or in fact any radio stations in yonks. But I think I've done a pretty alright job and I like to think that the music I've included here best represents the variety and talent that makes up the Australian music scene. Have I included all of the top-notch and current musicians and bands that are out there? Probably not. But these are just a sample of some of what I believe are the best artists and musicians to have come out from this great land of ours. So I hope you will enjoy these tracks as much as I have.

So my first ever music playlist is now up and running!! I'm quite proud of this little collection and although it took me ages to decide which songs to put in, I think the songs here best represents what I believe makes up the post-punk revival genre.

For starters, I think we need to define what is post-punk revival. Some argue that this musical genre doesn't even exist, but that's an argument for another day. According to wikipedia, the post-punk revival was a development in alternative rock of the late 20th and early 21st centuries in which bands took inspiration from the original sounds and aesthetics of post-punk of the late 1970s. Although sharing similar aesthetics to original post-punk bands, such as Joy Division, The Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen, many of these new bands have incorporated elements of other genres into the mix, including new wave and dance punk. I think this was why picking songs for this playlist was so difficult for me, as a lot of the bands that fit under the post-punk revival umbrella draws elements across a broad range of other genres too. I also do realise that I've left out a couple of big names in the post-punk revival scene, namely Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers - but that is why the title of the playlist includes a "one" (so expect more to come!)
