The college radio station HoRadS in Stuttgart (where I used to have a show) has only been broadcasting since 2004, but they are now looking to extend their music library to include several decades before the station's existence. To know what they should get, they've asked lots of people affiliated with the station (including me) to contribute song lists of what everyone considers "essential tracks." The sole guideline was to restrict the selections to those beginning with or following the birth of punk (about 1977) up to 2003. Oh yeah, and there was something about limiting the list to 30 tracks. Oh well. :o)

I strived for a well-balanced cross section of material from the period, though having three tracks from both London Calling and This Year's Model goes against that idea quite a bit. I feel the choices are justified, however, since those are the two quintessential albums from arguably the greatest musicians within the time frame. Otherwise I tried holding to a maximum of two or three representative tracks per artist.
