Tom Lugo: The Man Whose Heart Sings Love

Many of you are already familiar with a very special man in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania named Tom Lugo. A man with the biggest heart in the world. Tom is the leading force behind the band Stellarscope and the owner of Patetico Recordings. He is also the man behind a number of music festivals, such as the Pop Noise Fest, in Philadelphia and Puerto Rico.

When times are tough, Tom is always the first to step up to the plate to contribute what he can in the ways that he does best.

As Japan continues to rumble, Tom has already devised a way to help collect a few funds to aid in the relief for the many victims of this tragedy. A series of compilations are underway to help aid the Japan Disaster Relief Fund. Though enough material has already been collected for a couple compilations, Tom is already considering a 3rd, and maybe even a 4th, to add to the collection.

There are three ways that you may be able to help.

1.) If you are a musician, you can submit a track for consideration for one of the later compilations. Make sure you select something good and not that piece of crap you can’t use because your singer smoked himself silly the night before and the guitar player had to resort to old worn out rusty strings because there weren’t any others left after breaking the last E and G strings anywhere near the studio. Besides, it was a crappy song anyway that really had no direction.

I’ve seen a few names of some who have already contributed a song and it promises to be a must for your collections. Some names that you will be proud to share some digital space with including a few rare tracks.

Remember, this will help to get you heard by an audience who may have never heard of you before. Also, if selected, you will be placed amongst others who have something worth hearing. Let the world hear you too are worth a listen.

You may submit your track to Tom Lugo at panophonic@yahoo.com as soon as possible.

2.) Once the compilations are released, buy yourself at least one copy of each compilation. By ‘buy a copy’, I mean actually spend a little money on a real copy, be it a hard copy issued CD or, if you prefer, a digital copy. I do not mean download a pirate copy that will give you the music but not do a thing to send aid to Japan. Remember people, that’s what this is all about. Helping our brothers and sisters in Japan. They need all that we can muster up, along with a few prayers or other loving vibes you might be able to send them.

Once these babies are ready, CDs and digital copies will be available from Amazon and through iTunes. While you are at it, don’t forget to maybe do a little early Christmas shopping or other gift purchasing while you’re there. It’s the kind of gift that gives to both your loved ones and to those greatly in need.

3.) Spread the word. Chat up these compilations and tell the rest of the world how great they are. Every little bit helps and Lord knows Japan needs every little bit that we can do for them right now and for a very long time to come.

Keep your eyes open on the Patetico Recordings website for the official release of these compiliations. Air Atlantic Underground Radio will also help to keep you up to date. Let’s help Tom spread the love.

Gig Review: Fuzz Factory 4

The evening drive through the city of Philadelphia was smooth, the air was crisp, and there was an energy filling the night. After a few turns I approached the Italian Market. The bright neon lights of Geno’s steaks illuminating the path a couple of seconds later I arrived at Teri’s Bar & Diner. You hear the sounds of Latin music playing through speakers overhead and I start to realize that the old Italian market has become a Latin market, tons of little eateries, market shops, and bodegas.

I walked into Teri’s and was immediately greeted by the staff and the customers, like walking into a neighborhood bar where everyone knows each other and hospitality reigns. A bar is on the right, as you walk in, booths are on the left, and a small stage in the far left hand corner. I set up my gear while talking to Jon (of music for headphones), soundchecked, and time for some grub. So I walk next door of Teri’s to get some authentic beef tacos sprinkled with fresh cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños. Came back in and ate them while hanging out with friends. Man, were they delicious.

People start coming in eating, chatting, drinking, and having fun while shoegaze, psych, and indie rock played through the diner’s sound system.

I took the stage at around 9 PM, played mostly new material written within 2 weeks of show; I had to a technical malfunction with my MC303 and lost everything programmed in it. Despite being a little nervous for not being too familiar with my out set everything turned out fine.

Then music for headphones took the stage and played a great set of psych rock. The drummer played some electronic drums which added an electro vibe to their live sound.

The final act was Radere. Slowly building upon layers of sounds, this one man band delivered a one song set of atmospheric musings.

The night came to an end, we shared and expressed our excitement for we had experienced yet another night of do it yourself psychedelic rock night in the city of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia.

PiLam Shoegaze Festival Review: Screen Vinyl Image/Ceremony/Stellarscope/The Sounds of Kaleidoscope

I got off from work at 5PM, battled traffic on I-95 from Wilmington to Southern Philadelphia suburb of Havertown. I met up with my band mates, Bob Forman and Robert DeFlaviis. We packed my Nissan Xterra and headed towards Philadelphia.

Despite it being a Friday night in the City of Brotherly Love traffic was light and we got to the PiLam in University City Philadelphia in no time. We circled around the block to park in the back alley of the PiLam. We met up with Alex Nic, the organizer of the event, and we discussed the logistics for the equipment load in. As we head out to download our gear we cross paths with Paul Baker and John Fedowitz of Ceremony, they were also bringing gear in.

Once we were done with the fun part of being in a band (being your own roadie), we all went to Copa Banana for some Caribbean inspired food, drinks, and Coronas. The service and food were very good but it took some time to get our bill. We all get back to the PiLam to find out that missed most of Space Ghost Cowboys, who had been added to the bill as openers at the last minute! We met with Kim and Jake of Screen Vinyl Image and caught up with each other. Later on in the night I had a nice chat with the nice folks of Space Ghost Cowboys.

Stellarscope took the stage and played a high octane set to a dim red light. It was intimate with the fans all at the edge of the stage. Soon after, The Sounds of Kaleidoscope took the stage and brought their ethereal jam antics to the next level. They swirled through the stage like the high frequency sounds they were creating. Ceremony followed with their bombastic post-punk shoegaze infused sound, the visuals synchronized to the beats, and the high energy performance of Paul and John. Screen Vinyl Image was headlining this sonically charged bill. They brought the roof down with their synth heavy electro dreampop, fuzzed out guitars, and tantalizing video imagery.

It was 2 AM at this point, all the people that attended were buzzing with excitement, buying merchandise, and talking to the bands. We reminisced of the days of the PopNoise Festival and the Walls of SoundFest. Everyone was so friendly and loved the event. We then loaded our vehicles; we said our good byes to the people in attendance as well as in the other bands. We parted ways into the darkness of a brisk summer night with stars in our hair.
